Garth Brooks - Night Rider's Lament Lyrics

One night while I was out a ridin'
The grave yard shift, midnight 'til dawn
The moon was bright as a readin' light
For a letter from an old friend back home
And he asked me
Why do you ride for your money
Tell me why do you rope for short pay
You ain't a'gettin' nowhere
And you're loosin' your share
Boy, you must have gone crazy out there
He said last night I ran on to Jenny
She's married and has a good life
And boy you sure missed the track
When you never come back
She's the perfect professional's wife
And she asked me
Why does he ride for his money
And tell me why does he rope for short pay
He ain't a'gettin' nowhere
And he's loosin' his share
Boy he must've gone crazy out there
Ah but they've never seen the Northern Lights
They've never seen a hawk on the wing
They've never spent spring on the Great Divide
And they've never heard ole' camp cookie sing
Well I read up the last of my letter
And I tore off the stamp for black Jim
And when Billy rode up to relieve me
He just looked at my letter and grinned
He said now
Why do they ride for their money
Tell me why do they ride for short pay
They ain't a'gettin' nowhere
And they're loosin' their share
Boy, they must've gone crazy out there
Son, they all must be crazy out there

Garth Brooks Night Rider's Lament Comments
  1. H.... B....

I doubt Garth would argue, but Chris sang it better.

Raw talent, class act! He does country proud! One of the best ever!

  4. M.... V....

Thumbs-down simply because I don't like Garth Brooks

  5. W.... ....

Michael Burton actually wrote this beautiful song. So many people who sang it also get credit for writing it, BUT they did not write it. Mr Burton wrote this Great song. Having said that, Garth’s is the best heartfelt and produced version. And best yodel to boot!

    W.... ....

I thought it was Ian Tyson.

  6. D.... T....

I recorded this on VHS the night it aired and lost the tape (along with the long lost friend) who I lent it to shortly after and hadn't heard this version in 25+ years. It's my all-time favorite Garth song (even though it's a cover!) and I'm absolutely ecstatic that I've finally found this performance again. Thank You, Jeremiah!!

I remember when this aired, as well. Greatness and a great song. I tip my hat to all the great artists who covered this song, as well.
Also, I am curious if anyone remembers the VH1 Storytellers program that aired, featuring Garth Brooks that was recorded around this time?
It was one of the best, open and intimate shows I have ever seen of Garth.
I have looked for it for years and have not found it to buy, watch, or otherwise. Just wondering if anyone has come across it?

    T.... ....

I also recorded it the night it aired and I replayed it all the time. Lost that VHS tape years ago.

    Love this song!

  13. M.... M....

    Awwwww.....I love this song!
    Haven't heard it for years.
Reminds me of when I was travelling

  14. S.... W....

    That was awesome!!

  15. K.... G....

I think Garth is greatness, but this song is so much bigger than he is. Jerry Jeff's version is so much better. I still love it. There's no bad version of this song. See Suzy Bogguss.... My favorite song... ever. No matter who sings it.

    K.... G....

    Kenny Go
Chris Ledoux does a pretty good job too

    K.... G....

Jerry Jeff was so influential, he was the Dylan that made country music, mainstream. Like Dylan did to folk music.

  16. S.... T....

Thank you so much for uploading! One of his best tunes.

  17. J.... B....
