Free - Goin' Down Slow Lyrics

Yes I've had my fun
If I don't get well no more
Yes I've had my fun, baby
If I don't get well no more
You see I have this pain in me
An I'm goin' down slow

Won't somebody write my mother
Tell her the shape I'm in
Please write my mother
Tell her to pray for me
Tell her to forgive my sin

Tell her don't send no doctor
Yes a doctor can do me no good
Yes no doctor mama
Doctor can do me no good
But you see through all of my trials
I never did all the things I could

On the next train south
Baby you can look for my...
On the next train south
Mama, you can look for...
Yes now if you see my baby baby
Yes you know I'm dead and gone

Ya know I first saw these guys at a gig in 1969 at a small club near where I live Peterlee, England when I was 16, followed them all over the place, small clubs, big venues, they just blew you away, so 4kin talented with old blues/rock songs, even made the charts with Alright now etc., but this song and others like Walk in my Shadow, Woman etc., classics, Koss's guitar licks, Andy's bass, Simon's beat and Rodgers voice, FFS what a great time we had listening and watching them perform at packed houses, thank you Free !

  8. J.... ....

Try Duane's version on for size.

  9. b.... ....

i hear a piano player but none playing the keys, hum anyway thats the missing piece imho what is missing in modern rock today, the great bands always had a piano

  10. G.... F....

Wow, what a brilliant band Free were, I bought this album in 1969 and still have it. Their raw blues sound on this track still sounds fresh even after 50 years. Thanks for the post.

The song that flies closest to the sun.
Koss does that 'calling' sound, typical of early blues players. The late great Guy Stevens on piano too.

  16. M.... W....

    Great fkn photos man

  17. D.... C....

Amazing! That sound blows my mind

  18. P.... C....

We looked at the world as a rocket in the sky and gave caution to operettas’ musicians to free us. However the spirit is still there, waiting to be recognized and conscious again and again until it is everywhere in elevation to the Paradise of Utopians and other unconscious dreamers!

  19. R.... R....

    BEST BAND EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. T.... I....

Aww... That bluesy Gibson Les Paul
sounds the way it's supposed to.

  21. T.... I....

You just don't hear that type of guitar
    anymore. Not in today's music.

    T.... I....

Toney Isaiah Today's music needs to go straight to hell.

    T.... I....

Just listen to greta van fleet. That dude can play

  22. T.... I....

They don't play that in today's radio
    stations except KDHX.

  23. L.... ....

Fraser bassline + Kossof vibrato on a LP just plugged in a Marshall amp + Rodgers = you have the full blues-Rock package, nothing else come close, they were just unreal, raw power, sheeeeeers everytime, tha vibrato is just one of a kind, that powerful voice to die for, that chemistry among the 4 members... FREE the best rock-blues band ever. Nothing else.

  24. S.... B....

Had to check my ears..... This sounded like Jimmy Page playing. Kossoff knocks it out of the park on this one.

    S.... B....

Page never had this kind of vibrato or phrasing. Koss would have blown him off the stage based on those aspects alone.

  25. R.... G....

The average age of Free when this was recorded was slightly less than 18! That is mind-blowing, super talented foursome!!!!

  26. R.... B....

I wore out my stylus on this album.
Was fortunate enough to see Free on a few occasions the last being the Isle of Wight 1970, but they did quite a short set and did not play many songs.
I actually wrote to the bassist Andy Fraser about one of the gigs I saw them at the Farx Club in Potters Bar (He wrote back to me and remembered that one!) and I wish I could get those images out of my head on to Youtube. This was a band totally on fire and playing in totally harmony with each other.
Cannot begin to explain how lucky and privileged I have been to see Free, one hell of a band, all of them.

  27. m.... ....

OMG Free was my fav band when I was 14

    m.... ....

I discovered them when I was 14; sadly 7 years after they broke up. They are still my favourite band. Nobody else comes close.

  28. r.... ....

    Awesome

  29. r.... ....

    Fucking Koss.............

  30. E.... R....

All hail the God of tone and vibrato

  31. M.... ....

    ON THE NEXT TRAIN SOUTH

  32. M.... L....

Love Kossoff sound, so raw and bluesy. This is one of the best bands ever. Loaded with talent

  33. A.... F....

Saw this band twice in my home town of Sunderland in ‘69 and ‘70. Saw many others also including Zeppelin and now looking back and evaluating them all these 4 young lads knock spots off them all.
An incredible band and so young at the time.
Rodgers far and away the greatest British rock and blues singer ever.

  34. C.... ....

Love the piano on this! Who played it?

    C.... ....

Andy Fraser - he played bass of course, but also keyboards on this album, as did Steve Miller who was brought in

    C.... ....

I thought piano was played by Nicky Hopkins.

  35. E.... H....

Im 29 and just realised i wasted alot of my life, not knowing about this kind of greatness this band delivered

    E.... H....

ENJOY ERIC ,I'M 70 YEARS OLD AND I'VE SEEN THEM PLAY. STILL LISTEN TO THIS GREAT BAND EVERY WEEK. WHEN I DIE THEY MUST PLAY 'BE MY FRIEND'

    E.... H....

Try being 53, a hard rock guy all my life and somehow missed all this greatness too. Shit, I’ve got them until my dying day now so that’s good right.

  36. B.... C....

    Nice as F***

  37. T.... I....

  43. R.... B....

I am a big Howlin Wolf Fan but this is the One, Paul Rodgers voice and Paul Kossoff`s guitar are simply the best.

    R.... B....

Check out The Steepwater Band's version; might make a convert out of you :)

  44. I.... M....

My all time favourite band. They had it all & in the end, had nothing at all. Brilliant musicians. It was so sad that they finished before fulfilling their massive potential!

  45. T.... W....

Kossoff's left hand was so wicked.

    T.... W....

    Right as well !

  46. T.... Z....

Absolutely the best . No band comes close.

  47. M.... R....

I only heard this for the 1st time last year. This came out March 69. Led Zeps 1st album came out Jan 69. How did I miss this?.IMO the guitar is intense n better than Pages I Can't Quit You Babe as far as blues licks is concerned. ..I like both songs.

  48. M.... L....

    changed music forever

  49. T.... Y....

Wonderful. Did EC do this on "From the Cradle to the Grave" - the video/TV documentary if not the album/CD itself? This sounds awfully familiar. EC playing his Gibson 335(?), so similar tone too.

  50. J.... M....

Kossoff was 18 and Fraser was 16 when this was recorded!!!!!!!!

    J.... M....

Joe M /Wow so hard 2 believe how fky young they were. ...No 1 can ever come close 2 this blues rock masterpiece. .I didn't realize they were that young on this recording. ..

    J.... M....

Listen to Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac-great blues!!!

  51. J.... O....

    Thanks!

  52. m.... n....

i am gonna say this and fuck it'' but free's version of this tune is the baddest'', I ever heard and a lot of great artists have done this tune'', I mean alot'', but dam''

  53. m.... n....

    kossoff unfortunately did really affect a lot of peoples lives good '' musically I like to think'', a dam shame in another', sorry, only know one way to say it, had been thru the shit myself, so, they def would of went very far '''' wow'' wtf'' mindblowing to think the great music that was still in him dam'', it affected paul rogers deeply;

  54. A.... F....

now that i grew older i think that is the best free album

  55. E.... L....

That piano struck me harder than a lightning on a storm

  56. o.... ....

A very similar sound to Savoy Brown's first album. Another great British blues band featuring a criminally underrated guitarist in Kim Simmonds.

    o.... ....

Savoy Brown is the shit! Love Blue Matter and Street Corner Talking.

  57. p.... ....

That's the way yer' do it x

  58. P.... ....

Free were one of my favourite bands growing up in the seventies. But would they get through the auditions on The X-Factor?

    P.... ....

No, because the judges faces would melt off at the very sight of these 4 men playing and because they wouldn't be able to handle the immense amount of soul and skill due to judges all being talentless hacks.

  59. 4.... ....

OMG! was listening to bad company and decided to do some research. I never heard of free before. these guys are just as soulful as van Morrison and led zeppelin yet I rarely see any of their music out there.

    4.... ....

    I have a life and I'm 30.

    4.... ....

it's because this music is not heard anymore. even radio stations that play rock music, play the same and the same bands or songs. They don't know or care for gems like this to be heard.....

    4.... ....

they play suckass radio friendly music over an over , they did it so when hip hop and rap came on it was refreshing'', not that it was talent or even music hell', called brainwashing''

    4.... ....

Bad Company were a watered down, commercial version of Free; lacking the blues and soul of Paul Kossoff and Andy Fraser. To me, the very best tracks from the first six (Paul Rodgers) Bad Company albums would make just one great album; not too bothered about the rest of their songs. All of the Free albums were wonderful.

  60. R.... S....

    What a gem!!!!

  61. a.... h....

ive had my fun baby, if i dont get well baby...

  62. .... ....

Andy Fraser. One of the most talented bass players - musicians. RIP

    .... ....

Weren't Bruce & Fraser from the same era i.e. might Fraser have influenced Bruce? Bruce is Scottish, Fraser is a Scottish name - were they both from Scotland/Glasgow?

    .... ....

I agree with you he had groove or soul (Koss would say a modern blues feel). This gave Free a funky, pop, Rock & Roll edge; for example All Right Now always holds its own at the disco. Bruce is much more old school swing jazz shuffle groove oriented (compare the Free version of Crossroad Blues with Cream's to hear the different groove approach).

    .... ....

I’ve been playing bass since the early 70s but always pick up new licks from Andy Fraser. What fun he must have! He’s just too much!!

    .... ....

I was 17 when I first got my hands on Fire and Water on a 8 track and wore that son of a bitch out!

    .... ....

@2 SEXY 4 PORNO Bruce was a classical trained celloist

  63. c.... c....

    Ahh but no googly moogly!

  64. I.... M....

Simply the best band ever koss was so fucin unique

    I.... M....

    The best

  65. M.... S....

Paul Rogers -no nos deja de sorprender, con su excelente interpretacion de este blues ,legendario.

  66. J.... W....

@Bluesblaster I'd argue that although they have a similar style of vibrato, Kossoff had the most sustain on his vibrato, therefore you could say he was better in a sense. I love Kirwan's songs and phrasing with Fleetwood Mac though, he's one of my biggest influences.

    J.... W....

Hi. How in the hole world you can compare kirwan to kossoff its insane its like compare Green to kirwan its even more unrealistic Green, Koss the are giants to Danny Kirwan but i like he play beautiful he not so bad guitarist

  67. J.... W....

magic cover of a blues classic, free the kings of blues rock. the feels for this track is insane. paul rodgers wow pure raw magic singer.

  68. m.... c....

thank you, thank you ... Blues and Free will never die.

  69. B.... ....

    Good stuff:)

  70. J.... W....

awesome cover of a blues classic, i do love free. glad paul rodgers is still around, really the best rocker still alive.his new album the royal sessions, magic.heard the album 3 times already in the last 2 days,it is that good.

    J.... W....

JAMIE, ITS NOT ONLY PAUL ,WE SEE THE BEST GUITARIST, BEST DRUMMER ,BEST BASE PLAYER AND BEST SINGER EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  71. T.... ....

nice and sloppy - me likey

    T.... ....

Sloppy? That's how the blues is meant to be played.

  72. f.... ....

to john knottenbelt---can't say any better-- love Koss "nuff said" !

  73. J.... K....

"Tons of Sobs", one of the BEST debut albums of this genre ! "Nuff Said" !

  74. J.... K....

Paul Kossoff one of the greatest guitarists to have come our of the UK & a life too short on this planet. Just listen to the intensity of his playing ! Man that is the Blues ! The boy was barely over 20 years old at the time ! Forget comparisons, he was an enigma ! RIP Paul, I DUG your playing !

  75. Z.... ....

check my channel if ya can

  76. s.... b....

well i,m just short 60 alright now too pop .i guess you listened to glam rock philistine

  77. D.... ....

Check out the Howling Wolf version. It doesn't have a lot of guitar playing but it has a spoken part by Willie Dixon that'll crack you up.

  78. I.... S....

    I need this TAB !

  79. J.... H....

    The missing link in R&R!

  80. J.... H....

    What you said.

  81. J.... M....

This band is the BOMB! I spent many an hour listening to them back in the days of my youth. Some of the best sounds to come out of the era of ROCK N FUCKING ROLL that helped me get laid every night.

  82. m.... b....

Love the sweet sweet sound of those humbucking dual coil pick-ups on a solid body axe wielded by a TRUE BLUESMAN! Especially Dr. Paul Kossof! RockSteadyEveryBody!!! ];{) Peace!

  83. m.... b....

    AwwwwwwYeaaaaaaaaahhh!

  84. K.... G....

Depends how old you are. I remember them very well. Strange, because I didn't think much of them at the time. "All Right Now", was too pop, too commercial for me at the time. 40 years later, a new awakening.

  85. T.... ....

Paul Rodgers is from my home town of Middlesbrough! ...also, this song is amazing. Surprised it doesn't have more views, this thing is a masterpiece!

  86. n.... ....

How good is this..... want it played at my passing.

  87. K.... W....

soooo friggin good...!!!!!! love Free !!!!

  88. S.... M....

certainly Koss was influenced by Clapton in his early years but he went his own way and developed his own unique style and Eric noticed that as you know...

  89. G.... B....

Classic 12-bar slow blues - superb pace, superb solos!

  90. M.... B....

The guitarist sounds like clapton when he was with bluesbreakers, doesn't he ?

  91. D.... C....

when i introduce ppl to this band i use fire n water

  92. W.... V....

    In my opinion, of course...

  93. W.... V....

His vibrato was not the best, but SECOND to best. Best was Danny Kirwan. Sadly both not in music anymore. We all know their sad stories.

    W.... V....

Wouter Vuijk Kossoffs vibrato was the best, even Clapton asked him how he made it no one has come near.

    W.... V....

Sorry, Kossoff holds the throne for the best all-time vibrato in my opinion. Second was Peter Green. Third was Kirwan.

  94. W.... V....

Yeah, know what you mean. Same here.

  95. J.... G....

It's when I listen to this guy that I realise I really am nowhere as a guitar player.

  96. N.... ....

    Ah yayeah!

  97. P.... B....

Very well put. It's frustrating when the youth of today tell you they've never heard of the greats. Paul K I witnessed in a club in London in 1968 - always had his mouth open in agony when he played a solo -that was his trade mark - his vibrato was the best
