Frank Zappa - The Mud Shark Lyrics

[includes a quote from Little House I Used To Live In]

[FZ:] That's right, you heard right, the Secret Word for tonight is Mud Shark! And of course with the Mud Shark Secret Word is the Mud Shark Arpeggio... a marvellous little arpeggio, and now the mating call of the adult male Mud Shark...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] THE MUD SHARK DANCING LESSON!

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[Mark:] Wait a minute... we're gonna do a little dancing... a little dancing thing called the Mud Shark... Now, this dance started up in Seattle
[Howard:] Yes...
[Mark:] The story...
[FZ:] Lemme tell you the story 'bout the Mud Shark...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] Bring the band on down behind me, boys...
[Howard:] Say! Good God! Ain't it funky! Say!
[FZ:] The origins of the Mud Shark are as follows...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] There's a motel in Seattle, Washington, called the Edgewater Inn... The Edgewater Inn is built out on a pier... so that means that when you look out your window you don't see any dirt, it's... got a bay or something out in your backyard...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] And to make it even more interesting, in the lobby of the aforementioned motel there's a bait and tackle shop where the residents can go down and, whenever they want to, rent a fishing pole and some preserved minnows and schlep back up to their rooms, open the window, stick their little pole outside and within a few minutes actually catch a fish of some sort that they can bring into their motel room and do whatever they want with it, you know what I mean?

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] Now in this bay there's quite a variety of... fish!

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] Not only do they have mud sharks up there, they got little octopusses that you can catch

Fish!
Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] And all of these denizens of the deep can come in real handy...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] Let's say you were a travelling Rock and Roll band called The Vanilla Fudge... let's say one night you checked into the Edgewater Inn with an 8mm movie camera...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] Enough money to rent a pole, and just to make it more interesting...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] A succulent young lady!
[Howard:] Nooo!
[FZ:] With a taste for the bizarre...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] My mind drifts back... to a meeting, a chance meeting in the Chicago O'Hare Airport...

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] Where the members of The Vanilla Fudge told Don Preston about a home movie they made at the Edgewater Inn... with a mud shark!

Mud Sh-sh-shark

[FZ:] And I'm gonna tell you, this dance, the Mud Shark, is sweeping the ocean!

Hey! Mud Sh-sh-shark

[Mark:] Ah, we're goin'! Go 'head! Ah, we're goin'! Now we're gonna go out, somehow! Come one!

Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby

Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
(Now show 'em what they do with the Mud Shark!)
Out
You go out
(Now show 'em what they do with the Mud Shark!)
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Hey!
Out
You go out
(Catch the Mud Shark)
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby
Out
You go out
So far out
You do the Mud Shark, baby

Not too many people realize that the guys in his band had formerly been in the band known as the Turtles!

    j.... l....

You are close.. Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (aka Flo and Eddie) were formerly in the Turtles, and were special guest vocalists for Zappa in the show at Fillmore East.

    j.... l....

@Sam Street Yeah, and I'm glad they included "Happy Together" on side 2 of the album.

  8. B.... M....

youtube has really screwed up this album that should be one continuous piece of music until the end of willie the pimp. the lack of respect for this album, that will not allow individual songs to be sold in music stores, is pretty sad.

  9. S.... P....

One of the best Zappa bands...oh hell they were all awesome...but nobody covered the vocals like Howard and Mark.

I think they tore down the Edgewater Inn (not motel) and it used to overlook Puget Sound. It was a fairly-nice hotel.

  16. D.... B....

One of the great moments in rock and roll. Not serious at all. That's why it's great.

  17. K.... ....

    lol @ title.

  18. S.... A....

I love this album! Years ago listened to this all the time. One of my favorite albums by Zappa.

  19. D.... O....

Led Zeppelin and groupies at the Edgewater Inn

  20. a.... t....

i never meet a zappafan who pay no music himself and understand FZ

  21. T.... R....

I can't believe this song was written about the Vanilla Fudge/Led Zeppelin Incident.... Frank was too weird for me to get into...

    T.... R....

I cant believe idiots still attribute the whole 'mud shark' tale to Led Zeppelin

  22. G.... ....

Not only the sex-fearing man-hating “feminist” brigade, but people who should know (and do know) better, like David Hepworth, are still repeating the claim that the “lady with a taste for the bizarre” was in fact being raped.

    Like all right-wing people
(i.e people who, when issues of actual sexual freedom and / or freedom-of-communication are concerned, give the impression of being mentally under-developed, of having never adulthood, knowing this will secure them the most destructive “power” of all: power of censorship over communicative media)
they refuse to accept that an group-sex act of this sort can ever be anything but coercive.

    Newsflash – it wasn’t!

That it WAS absolutely consensual has been verified by everyone who was there (Appice, Bonham, Coles – whose joke about “disobeying orders” aggravates only the people who deserve to be aggravated) INCLUDING the lady herself. (Two sources for this: an Alaskan radio broadcast and one of Pamela Des Barres’ books: I’d be able to tell you which one if I wasn’t still “temporarily” homeless with my collection in a vault)
In the meantime we’re left with the problem of how “They” don’t want to know this – and they don’t want “Us” to be able to know this –
because details like this force people to confront a few uncomfortable truths about their own psychological needs. And, more importantly, about social politics and the consequences of their actions / inactions.

Easier to make out the words if you're stoned :) -- age 67

  24. e.... ....

My friend, Mick bought this album when it came out. We thought this was a great song(?) initially. I still love the pedestrian rhythm, and background singing, but even at the time, I thought the theme was adolescently perverse. Zappa was crippled by cynicism, and a very dark view of tradition, and American culture. He was a true iconoclast. I think he loved his family, but I don't believe he gave 2 shits about anyone else in this world. Having said all that; I think he was a brilliant instrumental arranger, and gifted creator of melodies, which is the hardest thing for any composer to conjure up. I still like him but it's hard for me to reconcile his anger, and pettiness which seemed to get worse as he aged. By the way, I first saw him perform at the Garrick Theater in Greenwich Village, late summer in 1967. The Mothers of Invention was the best vehicle for Zappa, and he should have stuck with those great musicians. As a solo artist, he kinda' stunk; too much guitar, too much smart ass.

    e.... ....

If he didn't give a shit" as you say, he wouldn't have been so angry...perhaps?

  25. G.... ....

    the man was a genius

  26. G.... ....

    the man was a genius

  27. J.... F....

yea i kwum hitler had public speaking ability but it was better left never thought of zappa could do anything musically

    J.... F....

What does one have to do with the other???????????????????????

  28. S.... t....

Zappa seems to glorify the stupidest aspects of rock and roll. What's so great about a rock band penetrating a groupie with a fish? It just shows how stupid groupies are to trust themselves to the hands of narcissistic rock and rollers, and how disgusting and clueless said rockers are too.

I loved his Joe's Garage and a few other albums, but he seemed to be a rebel without a clue, being weird for weird's sake. Great guitarist though.

    S.... t....

@theevildad I must have been in a bad mood. I'd much rather live in a world with Zappa than without. I miss him.

    S.... t....

I also enjoyed him when I was young. Now that I'm older, I rather think he was dumb as well. His attitudes towards women are somewhat difficult to stomach in the 21st century -- he comes across like a rock and roll Donald Trump.

But it was a different era, I'll grant you that.

    S.... t....

@Phisting Phuckers He apparently had a serious dickhead for a father who may or may not have been abusive, so there's that too. I mostly think that rock and roll musicians are usually products of trauma, so I try to give 'em a break, because they do give us a lot of fun.

He was a bit of an enigma wrt women - he totally backed and supported his unfortunately named daughter, Moon Unit, in her music career. Sadly, we can see where that got her. She was a one-hit wonder, and none of his kids have done particularly well. I think they are all living off residuals and residual fame.

    S.... t....

That's the whole point.. Zappa's satire of the whole" rockstar" lifestyle.. the man didn't even smoke pot, nor did the musicians that wanted to stay in his band.

    S.... t....

@Bunty McCunty Stevie Terreberry called Ted Nugent the Donald Trump of rock. I don't know enough about Nugent to know what that really means. He seems Republican I guess, idk.

  29. S.... G....

We were listening to this when it came out on vinyl, but I hadn't moved to Seattle at that point. I was still living in Portland. Once I moved it meant a lot more to me lol

    S.... G....

I had just moved to Seattle from Northern New Jersey via WESTPAC and Honolulu, HI when this was released and FULLY identified with this song !!

  30. W.... B....

Who else would name kids Dweezil & Moon Unit? Refreshing break from the serious artists!

  31. T.... M....

I still wanna know what exactly Led Zeppelin and Vanilla Fudge did to that groupie with the mud shark!

    T.... M....

+Philip Santori Oh if only Vanilla Fudge didn't loose that film!

    T.... M....

According to the Wikipedia article that quotes a couple different biographies, it was just the nose of the fish that was the article of affection. I bet all they did was spank some groupie with a fish and the 'legend' was embellished from there. It all seems typically juvenile.

    T.... M....

Rumor has it that jimmy page inserted a baby shark into a girl and it had to be surgically removed. Not sure which door it was/ mud i guess.

    T.... M....

the girl was a red head and the fish apparently was colored to match...john bonham..red snapper

    T.... M....

Tris Mamone read the book Hammer of the Gods Led Zeppelin you read about it in there. ✌️

  32. S.... L....

A perverted genus at the very least and I do mean the very least! Because of Frank, I would never be a groupie. I miss him so...

  33. B.... ....

I just couldnt get into zappa and the mothers--all I wanted to listen to was good rock and roll by the bands of the era like Stones, Beatles and American bands like Byrds, Aiirplane. The Dead etc... zappas hippy groucho marx personna and the jazzy fusion music or whatever you call  it---I thnk Zappas best song was Camarillo Brillo

  34. s.... b....

    s.... b....

+scott bradley Is he being racist?

    s.... b....

The term is now used to describe a white girl who likes black guys I believe (which isn't racist per se, but I guess it's a derogatory term). Back then it was merely a type of fish that was used in some apocryphal sexual escapade.

    s.... b....
