Frank Zappa - Flower Punk Lyrics
[based on Hey Joe (Roberts)]
[includes a quote from Wild Thing (Taylor)]
[the 1984 re-mix also includes a quote from My Sharona (Fieger/Averre)]
Hey Punk, where you goin' with that flower in your hand?
Well, I'm goin' up to Frisco to join a psychedelic band.
I'm goin' up to Frisco to join a psychedelic band.
Hey Punk, where you goin' with that button on your shirt?
Hey Punk, where you goin' with that button on your shirt?
I'm goin' to the love-in to sit & play my bongos in the dirt.
Yes, I'm goin' to the love-in to sit & play my bongos in the dirt.
Hey Punk, where you goin' with that hair on your head?
I'm goin' to the dance to get some action, then I'm goin' home to bed.
I'm goin' to the dance to get some action, then I'm goin' home to bed.
Hey Punk, where you goin' with those beads around your neck?
Hey Punk, where you goin' with those beads around your neck?
I'm goin' to the shrink so he can help me be a nervous wreck...
Hey Punk!
Punky!
Hey Punk!
Punk!
Hey Punk!
(Hey Punk!)
Hey Punk!
Hey Punk!
Punky!
(Hey Punk!)
Hey-hey!
(Hey Punk!)
Go man, go... go man, go.
...Soft gun.
Golly, do I ever have a lot of soul?
Punk, I think I love you!
Come on, Roy
Questi dominga?
Let me see that nose, it didn't...
I wanna know for sure!
Leave my nose alone please!
What are you trying to do?
It's him over there
Longa!
Tic Tac!
[FZ on the left:]
It's one of the most exciting things that's ever happened to me
You know, every time I think about how lucky I am to be in the rock & roll industry, it's SO exciting. You know, when I first got into the rock & roll business I could barely even play the changes to this song on my, on my guitar. But now I'm very proficient at it, I can play the guitar, I can strum it rhythmically, I can sing along with my guitar as I strum. I can strum, sing, dance, I can make merry fun all over the stage. And you know, it's so wonderful to... It's wonderful to feel that I'm doing something for the kids, because I know that the kids and their music are where it's at. The youth of America today is so wonderful... And I'm proud to be a part of this gigantic mass reception. I hope she sees me twirling, yes... I hope she sees me dancing and twirling, I will say: "Hello, darling!"
Is the song over?
[FZ on the right:]
Boy, this is really exciting, making a rock & roll record. I can't even wait until our record comes out and the teen-agers start to buy it. We'll all be rich and famous! When my royalty check comes I think I'm going to buy a Mustang. No, I think I'll... I think I'll get a Corvette. No, I think I'll get a Harley Davidson. No, I don't think I'll buy any of those cars. I think what I will do is I will buy a boat. No, I won't do that either. I think, ah, I'll go into real estate. I think I would like to... I think I'd like to buy La Cienega Boulevard. No, that wouldn't do any good. Gee, I wonder if they can see me up here, twirling my tambourine and dancing...
Maybe after the show one of the girls who sees me up here, singing and twirling my tambourine and dancing, will like me. And she will come over to me and I will walk... I will walk up to her and I will smile at her and I will impress her and I will say: "Hello, baby, what's a girl like you doing in a place like this? I'm from a rock & roll band, I think we should... "
Is the song over?
[Center mumbling:]
Ay, ay!
Mingia!
When do we get paid for this?
Ay, ay!
Stop sloppy rock & roll
Slop sloppy...
One more time!
Un...
Stop sloppy rock & roll
Bop bop bop!
YEAH! WHEEE!

And play my bongos in the dirt!
Oh Frank, you’re a strange man but a complete gosh darn genius as well! God bless you.
parody of Loves cover of 'Hey Joe' 1966
i'm going to my shrink so he can help me be a nervous wreck haha
First punk song
The damn ending of this song with the bizarre electronic sounds, though! Cool and very strange stuff.
This is a parody of the Leaves "Hey Joe"
I realized the music is also similar to I Know You Rider, which the Dead covered.
...A little bit softaaaaa~!
Punk, I think I love you...
But I don't know for suuuuure!
listen again to the lyrics
What makes Zappa and the mother’s music so good from the other Zappa decades of the 70s 80s and part of the 90s is their music of the 60s is so iconic
Im proud to be apart of this gigantic mass deception.
I h8 jews like if u agree
The 1960's summed up in three minutes and four seconds.
On first 8 track tape I bought to cruise around listening to back in 68. Let's make the water turn black....

And I'm proud to be part of this gigantic mass deception.
Go man go.....
solo frank zappa se atreve ha hacer esta clase de obras... u. album epico...
Finish it, dunega!
Funny thing about Zappa, he despised hippies and the whole "flower power" movement but hugely profited from it. At least he was honest in saying "we're only in it for the money."
@Iamman i upload 5 times a day for 6 months I DID answer, but, you know how YouTube is....It got lost. You are welcome to talk on FB - Martyn Timmis.
@The Other Doctor who is Martyn?
@Iamman i upload 5 times a day for 6 months My FB name Martyn Timmis. I'm in Uk.
@The Other Doctor oh. Makes sense
@Iamman i upload 5 times a day for 6 months Oh, sorry, cross purposes. 'I upload 5 times a day for 6 months', I thought was a statement!!! PS, Back to our orig chat! I'm sure McCartney said this in jest!!!!
i used to eat alot of L and listen to this album. little did i know he was makeing fun of me lol
"L"? Clue me in?
Hey Joe XDD
Zappa is My Music God!
great send up of the over rated Hey Joe.
Hey Joe where are you going with that gun in your hand.
This tune can only be fully appreciated with headphones on or good stereo separation.
That and a little something else perhaps.
Jayster Michigan this song doesn’t need any sort of headphone or good stereo or even an altered mind to “fully appreciate this tune” I’m so sad you are a part of that kind of logic
planetterrible “I guess I just wasn’t made for this time”
Headphones. I agree, but, from 01:52, you need a 'Balance' dial!!!
This is one of the songs that turned me against Sears ponchos.
Did Sear actually ever sell ponchos?
planetterrible Jajaja no, solo fue una frase ocurrente de ese genio
jimmy carl black was the indian of the group...
Im melting in my FEMA cell
and going to winter solstice at Chaco canyon
the constant reality of this song is almost terrifying.
Its great artistry in my opinion.
Brilliant. I'm shocked that some don't understand this song. Maybe you had to be there.
well I say!
Wtf is this shit😂
@Scrub
my point exactly
@Eric G I'm glad we agree
@Scrub
oh i dont agree with you, i just think you should go back to him
this isn't mainstream 1960s pop music. Frank Zappa was making fun of the box he was being put in through the music style. it's intentionally satire.
Good Fuckin Morning Goddamnit
get a lobotomy my dude
is the cover art trying to say that the beatles were only in it for the money?
Once they were replaced with doubles beginning with the Sgt Pepper album , yes . And to get the kids on LSD ..
Actually it was Zappa's statement to the government that they (The Mothers) shouldn't be sent to the reeducation camps because they... were only in it for the money.
Accurately too.
Who knows, and none of us alive today will be around to find out...
But my guess is, 100 years from now, Frank Zappa will rank among the few mid-twentieth century composers still remembered and considered worth listening to. He was a genius and way ahead of his time.
Frank Zappa had enough unheard material in his four vaults for people to listen to his music for the next 100-120 years oddly enough, a new album every year from this Laurel Canyon genius, and his music is currently being archived in the Save The Vault project which I am part of. +PhilMann #FrankZappa #SaveTheVault
Phil Mann True, very true.
Assuming his feuding kids dont bury the availability of his recordings in nonsense litigation forever more :(
Shayne O'Neill there's always discogs and soulseek
He was indeed a genius. His harmony ideas were not as fresh , in the world of serious composers as it might seem ,from the persepective of rock, folk , blues ,r&b,jazz vocabulary. His big serious music influence was Edgar Varese, worth checking out if you haven't.
legendary
Is this song over?
I know it's not this song but... "Hi boys and girls I'm Jimmy Carl Black and I'm the Indian of the group."
Thanks, Chrishawks CPO!xx
Chrisrawks CPO esa es Concentration Moon
Parody on Hey Joe songs
on an solo tour in the netherlands i spoke some time with CARL Black, he was stoned, an very relaxed ...
Geronimo Black
WAY ahead of its time... this was late 67 early 68...
Love it...the old days...)
Is The song Over?
Estradas bass rocks on this one,the remastered you can really hear it
If you're talking about the remix from 1984, Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black were taken off the record. The rhythm section was re-recorded as part of the remix.
This is my favorite Zappa song. Makes me want to beat the shit out of myself.
again and again!love to be there
and fuck ,...I thought I was so clever ,...and for so long ,..... and they were all trying to tell me ,... fuck me ,..I DO Suck ,..... oh well ,..when I get my royalty check ( someday ) ,..maybe at last, I'll find happiness ,... absolutely free ????
Well I'm goin' up to Frisco to join a psychedelic band...
7/8 time...
Not completely true. The rhythmic pattern of "Flower Punk" is complex, consisting of 4 bars of a fast 5 (2-3), followed by 4 bars of 7 (2-2-3).
That's right, alternating 7/16 and 5/16 is what I hear
@Max Aronow 9-2
the singing part is 4/4
the instrumental part is 7/4
(very badly played)
leave my nose alone please
Mental note: Must learn Bongos......Pachuco Bongos...
I will love everyone, I will love the police as they kick the shit out of me on the street.
So fuckin' ahead of it's time !!! What The Fuck was Mankind thinking ???
AFTER YOU HEAR THIS LISTEN TO THIS!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF_OO3cPIuk
Frank Zappas Flower Punk is superior to Hey Joe (the leaves , hendrix , the hazards )
Makes yearn to see a bomber burn......
"Gee, Mr. Clark, It's good a good beat and you can dance to it. So, I'd give it a 7."
@1blastman ~> And that attitude is what made disco so popular! ☺
this is wrong. this was by the mothers of invention. not just frank zappa. thats like saying raw power was by iggy pop and not the stooges.
@austenslost You're correct!! It should read,
"The Mothers of Invention / Frank Zappa"
Frank Zappa, however, did compose the lyrics for "Flower Punk" and if you know about music, whoever is the songwriter gets the most money!
@Peter Baum 1968?? Then I was 11. Maybe it was in America in 1968. I know that I get that LP in 1970 when I was 13, and it was brand new here in The Netherlands, Europe. At that time we, in Europe, where getting every America's things a few years later than it was there, in the beginning after the war 20 years later, or 10. Because at 1945 we became a part from America. America made us free from the Germans, other half of Europe from The USSR. So we allways walked a little behind. I was born in the end of the '50 schentury, and I am proud on it!!! At 1970 I was the first punk from Laren n.h. Hahahahohoho
@Anne van Paulus
wait you got "we are only in it for the money" in 1970.. you were into zappa at 13 in 1970. can i come over and do your laundry some time? XD
Nice!!!
austenslost I was into "we're only in it for the money" in 1968 when I was 13
FRANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait till our record comes out and teenagers start to buy it
@EsPoReNg Nice! It was my first album. In 1970 , I was 13 years and became one of the first punks in Amsterdam e.o. ( The Netherlands, Europe )
At the risk of pointing out the obvious: Try counting out the beats, and keeping time with the drummer.
Spoiler: I think you'll find this version of "Hey Joe" is in alternating 4-bar stretches of 7/8 and 5/8 time signatures (at least until the structure starts collapsing entirely around 1:30).
@Scott Nickell Who gives a fuck, you techno-bureaucratic punks,if you can count the beats,or if you can keep time with the drummer,or if it's in 7/8s, or 5/8s time!!! It's great fun and it's snappy, spiffy, snazzyand zappy!!...Just sit back, relax, listen, enjoy and shut the fuck up for once in your life!!! Also, keep in mind, how many great drummers have played with the Mothers -or,for Frank Zappa,to tell it like it is!!- :Jimmy Carl Black (the indian of the group),Aynslay Dunbar,Terry Bozzio e.a.(Not to mention Artie Tripp the 3rd,who was also the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's percussionist, before joining the Mothers)!!!....Is that enough to make your timing structure collapse??!!?? D' you want an encore-a,Dora??? You sorry, nerdy assholes can extirpate the fun out of anything you touch!!...Feeling is the essence of life, not anal-ysing!!!.....
wat. ahahahaha
Imagine introducing your friends to this and making them laugh their butts off.
golly do i ever have a lot of soul
No, "Darling. Do I have a lot of soul"!
go man go
go man go
Classic Frank Zappa satire that would even make Jimi Hendrix laugh...
Hendrix is on the cover art.
Song is so ahead of it`s time. It sound like it could be released today
Zappa was the best thing about getting stoned…All these years later- Old and sober he still makes sense- Peace!
@Mich B ~> And yet Zappa himself never did drugs tho he admitted he tried marijuana once and it only made him sleepy. Ironically many of us got wasted while listening to The Mothers! ☺
@Carson Bard the chords are G, D, A, E, B. (Same chords as Hey Joe but transposed.)
dwarf nebula
The leaves
Hey Joe, you're a PUNK!
This song is an oxymoron to me because it makes me want to go to Frisco and join a psychedelic band.
@WytZox1 And how many discovered possibilities for self actualization, beyond anything they'd ever imagined? Impossible to quantify.
* For every success there are many wannabe failures. I knew a gal who went to California to be a commune dwelling hippy. She told me that Joey Bishop was an A-hole b'cuz when she pestered him for spare change he told her to get a job. Sorry Honey but Joey said the right thing. Being a hippy does not entitle you to a celeb's money. ☺
@TheGP 😂🤣😅😉
"Darling. Do I have a lot of soul"!
Is the song over?
We used to get stoned and listen to this.
do you feel lucky punk...well do ya?
its Hey Joe.
you think you know everything, maybe so?
we had no affinity for totalitarianism of any kind.
If you had long hair you were considered dirty and unwashed even if you were spotless and had washed your hair twenty minutes before.
ok i'm very much pro-hippie but damn, zappa is beyond brilliant ! XD
Not all of them, but many are reviled for bad hygiene, expecting others to provide them a living for life, as well as a naive affinity for totalitarian communism
Because Native Americans/Indians NOW have casinos/Temples Of Fate
.
Great song, genius.
I'm going to the dance to get some action
And then I'm going home to bed......
In English, bro XD
this is so exciting
