Frank Zappa Bored Out 90 Over Comments
  1. A.... L....

Great review and I agree, one of his best records. For me the best so far (havent listened to all yet)

  2. L.... M....

I bought this today. First impression .. it's not grabbed me. That might be a good sign.

  3. R.... H....

Way too much yapping on the album for me. Not nearly enough music. These stoned, incoherent Americans were tedious first time round — can't imagine making the effort to navigate my way around them on repeated listenings.

  4. G.... ....

The way I see it Barry, this should be a very dynamite show!

    G.... ....

    YES! (surreal, loud burp sound)

  5. T.... ....

One of my favourite Zappa albums, it is a very dynamite show.

Fantastic review, agreeing on pretty much what you say and thank you for all the extra info...  the recording dates, very interesting. Looking forward to your review of Burnt Weeny Sandwich... must find it now.

@ZaraMoonVideos Thank you! There is a playlist of all the album reviews, if you can find it.

Out of all the orchestral albums Zappa produced, which is your favourite?  If not favourite, the one you listen to the most?  Mine is Orchestral Favorites.  I think it's a very charming and sophisticated performance.  I also love the LSO albums.  The LSO performance of Strictly Genteel is bloody hilarious. The LSO being a bigger orchestra makes the compositions have a very rich and full timbre.  Version 1 of Lumpy Gravy shares a similarity to those albums.

Genuinely struggling to answer that one. I don't have the Orchestral or the LSO albums yet, though.

Always liked the (track) Perfect Stranger, but that album isn't all orchestral. My copy of  The Yellow Shark has probably had more plays than almost any other Zappa album apart from maybe Jazz Noise Here & it's nice to have so many familiar melodies. Bebop Tango is great played by an orchestra.

    Great background information there mate.
Why don't you just download the first version via torrent?  That's how I heard it. You basically get the same music but there's no people talking (inside a piano) and it feels much more like a classical album than the 2nd version.  Haven't heard the 3rd version yet. Not sure if I want to, really.  You know the atrocities he caused with the 1984 version of Money and Ruben (actually I love the new version of Ruben, can't stand the new version of Money).  The first time I heard Lumpy Gravy was when it was issued as a twofer with Money.  Money had the awful new bass and drum tracks.
Love the tape splicing stuff and the general musique concrete atmosphere on Lumpy Gravy. Must stress how much I love all the tape manipulation and splicing stuff which we get more of on Money.
I take it you don't like Part 2 that much?  If so, me neither.  Well the music is still fantastic BUT that annoying laughter just spoils the entire Part 2 for me.  Yuk!  That guy laughing just makes me cringe in total disgust.  That said I still love Lumpy Gravy and still regard it as a modern classical masterpiece.  Even Zappa himself thought it and Joe's Garage were his best output.

I could technically download the entire catalogue, but that would be wrong, man. Buying the albums individually gives me time to digest everything properly. It's a journey!  I wouldn't want to spoil it. Then again, I don't care about the 3rd version either.

I think the weakest part of the album is the first 5 tracks of side 2 - the rest is great. I think that an earlier dose of King Kong towards the start would have helped the flow, but then what do I know? That laugh....  good grief! I suppose if you're Frank Zappa and you have a noise more irritating than anything an instrument can create, you'll use it.

@MrLtia1234 Yes, of course piracy is wrong.  The rightful owners of the copyrighted work should be paid.  Absolutely no argument there.  But should torrent be classified as piracy?  I'd have to disagree with people who may call it piracy. The reasons are simple.  It's p2p file sharing. It's like lending someone a CD or making the old mix tape.  CD's have a warning that says "Unauthorised copying, hiring, lending prohibited".  But that applies only where a person is earning money out of lending the CD.  In addition, I may be in the minority but after downloading music I tend to purchase the album on CD,  I can't tell you how many new bands and solo artists I discovered through downloading. I always buy the CD because (1) I want the artist to be paid; and (2) I really like to have the physical medium in my hand so that I know I have it.  Regarding the 2nd point, Zappa would disagree and I totally share his viewpoint. Had he been alive, I'm sure he would've embraced iTunes like he embraced digital technology when it was first introduced.  Read this page where Zappa proposed something similar to iTunes way back in 1983:  http://www.zappa.com/whatsnew/news/FZ-Proposal/

Also in about 2002 Bowie said he prefers to download music.
You do know the cost of manufacturing a CD, right?  From Wikipedia:  "In 1995, material costs were 30 cents for the jewel case and 10 to 15 cents for the CD. Wholesale cost of CDs was $0.75 to $1.15, which retailed for $16.98.  On average the store received 35 percent of the retail price, the record company 27 percent, the artist 16 percent, the manufacturer 13 percent, and the distributor 9 percent".

I do love to have the whole package (i.e., the physical CD, the booklet and the artwork) but the artist and the consumer are both at a marked disadvantage in terms of financials as far as CD's go. Having digital copies doesn't really cut it for me.

    @honkeyreduction
Totally agree 100% with all of that. I've always found youtube to be extremely useful and quite baffling how the copyright infringement claims are so random.

I just don't want to spoil it with Zappa, as there's so much to consume I want to make the best of it, like buying a brand new album each time. One at a time played loads in the car etc.
