Frank Sinatra - You And The Night And The Music Lyrics

You and the night and the music fill me with flaming desire,
Setting my being completely on fire!
You and the night and the music thrill me but will we be one
After the night and the music are done?
Until the pale light of dawning and daylight, our hearts will be throbbing guitars,
Morning may come without warning, and take away the stars.
If we must live for the moment, love till the moment is through!
After the night and the music die, will I have you?

First my gf gets me into sinatra, now my workplace...

I love the arrangement. I believe Bill May arranged this. I listen to it over and over again. My favorite recording of this song.

A great song from the same songwriting team (Arthur Schwartz/Howard Dietz) that gave the Human Race their own ultimate gift to it, "Dancing in the Dark."
Just as spiritual/metaphysical as the lyric to that tune is, this lyric is almost earthy in its poetic, matter-of-fact assessment of what may be a one-night stand:

"You and the night and the music
    Fill me with flaming desire
Setting my being completely on fire

You and the night and the music
Thrill me but will we be one
After the night and the music are done?

Until the pale light of dawning and daylight
Our hearts will be throbbing guitars
    Morning may come without warning
    And take away the stars

If we must live for the moment
Love till the moment is through
After the night and the music die
    Will I have you?"

...or, perhaps, it may turn into something more...

Great melodies, and always outstanding lyrics by Dietz. Love the lyrics of this one.

  13. C.... W....

this album is pretty good! might have to pick it up

  14. S.... ....

Bill Evans (Interplay-Consecration) brought me here. Often i don't know the jazz standards that i've frequently listen instrumentally. (Sorry if there are mistakes in my comment, i've just a basic knowledge of the English)
I love jazz music since i was a child :)

  15. B.... ....

prefer this tempo to Vic Damone version

  16. B.... D....

Hip. There is a reason why Sinatra was a great musician in addition to his genius:
I can only say at this time that as the Jazz culture changed from the the 1930's to the what we now understand as Modern Jazz, Sinatra listened like no other soloist of the 1950's and 1960's did. He was able to capture the rhymic changes of this period using is vocal equipment as a musical instrument.

    B.... D....

Its true. The voice is both a wind and sring instrument.

  17. g.... ....

Sinatra always overrated, in my opinion.  Much prefer Andy Williams, Jerry Vale, Dean Martin.

    g.... ....

There is no accounting for good taste. Frank Sinatra is the voice of magic..

Search Sinatra recordings beginning in the 1940's before you become a master critic.

Sinatra was the best interpretive singer of popular music in recorded history. There were better voices, none better than Sarah Vaughan's, but when it came to putting across the lyric, finding the right key & tempo to support that lyric to say nothing of the right arranger for the project at hand, well, Jimmy Roselli said it best: Sinatra's #1. The next guy, whoever he is, is #36. He gets well deserved credit for his phrasing but what often is missed by those who can't read a score are the subtle little changes he makes that to these ears are always an improvement over what was written. Two less than subtle examples would be Embraceable You & How Deep is the Ocean?, the versions on Nice 'n' Easy, the last verses on each. Check out Luck be a Lady from Guys 'n' Dolls from the show, then recheck what Sinatra did with that. That rhythm was his idea, probably to further stick it to Brando, but man, talk about musical instincts; the conversation begins & ends with this guy.

    Well said, Steve Silverman.

    g.... ....

    Jerry Vale?
    Seriously?
I bet you'd go positively insane for Johnnie Ray...

  18. A.... G....

This tune and in fact the whole album (Ring-a-Ding-Ding) was arranged and conducted by Johnny Mandel, not Felix Slatkin.

  19. J.... D....

I agree. Frank Sinatra is and will always be the best male singer. Magic

  20. r.... d....

    SIMPLY MARVELOUS!

  21. R.... H....

Reminds me of La Nora Aunor from the Philippines. This was her winning piece in her first broadcasted singing competition called the "Darigold Jamboree" in her home province. The rest was history.

  22. s.... ....

reminds me of LA.Noire...don't know why.!
