Frank Sinatra - Watertown Lyrics

Old Watertown, nothing much happenin', down on Main, 'cept a little rain
Old Watertown, everyone knows, the perfect crime, killin' time
And no one's goin' anywhere, livin's much too easy there
It can never be a lonely place when there's the shelter of familiar faces
Who can say it's not that way, Old Watertown, so much excitement
To be found hangin' round, there's someone standing in the rain
Waiting for the morning train, it's gonna be a lonely place
Without the look of familiar faces, but who can say it's not that way

    Why Sinatra?
Because this album, Watertown, was his penultimate recording and it was a commercial failure.
Because this album is conceptual and also breaks with the traditional form of Sinatra recording, voice plus orchestration. They were recorded separately.
Because it tells a story of desolate love ... Of abandonment. Because he does it in the third person.
Because it is produced, composed and written by Bob Gaudio.
Because one of the songs has a clear inspiration in Sgt. Pepper's from The Beatles: "She says".
That's why the record is a fucking jewel.

    * All the songs were written by Bob Gaudio and Jake Holmes

I'm disappointed. Of course, my opinion doesn't matter now because the album was from so long ago and has faded into obscurity. But just to say it, here are my opinions about this album. By the way, I'm in the music business and have composed and produced albums (nothing really big, but just wanted to say I'm not unfamiliar with recording.)
    1. The songs are surprisingly lackluster. They're... blah. Not bad, but far from good. There are no 'hooks' or memorable lines that jump out. I don't FEEL anything when listening - not sadness, not hope, not anything. I couldn't tell you more than one song title because nothing is memorable. I can't understand how people who have a track record of million-selling records could write these forgettable songs.
    2. The record sounds like a 'demo' - not a finished product. The orchestration is sparse and uncolorful. I've recorded jingles with more interesting arrangements than on this album. And I respect the people - arranger, producer, engineer, etc. They're all first class. So what the hell happened?
    3. If Frank was not a megastar and, in my opinion, the best pop singer of the twentieth century, I would say his vocals on this are ok, but not great. The problem is not him. The songs don't show off a singer. They're emotionally flat. So the singer can't convey idea of the album, which is about a man with lots of problems.
    4. I read on Wikipedia that the album received 'mixed reviews' when it came out. If you think I'm being negative in this review, you ain't seen nothing yet. My review back then would have torn this album to shreds. My review would begin:
Assemble the best people in American commercial music, give them a big budget, complete creative freedom, and turn them loose. It's the sixties, and you can express whatever you want. Freedom - it's what every creative person loves. Four months later, when the project is done, put the record on the turntable and have everyone gather around and listen to all the tracks. When the record is done, become aware of the complete silence in the room. No one speaks. No one reaches for another cookie or bottle of Coke. Without saying anything, hand the master tape to the assistant engineer. point to the Tape Vault and say one word - "Archive". Then let everyone go to a nearby bar and try to forget the whole disaster.

Never thought I could get into Sinatra, not that I tried too hard either but wow glad I found this album today , it's great. Grew up in Watertown Connecticut too so it's kind of eerie, as that town like the one in New York is pretty dull

The songs on the album were written and produced by Bob Gaudio. An original member of the 4Seasons.

I loved this album. It was originally going to be made into a tv program. I think it would have been great.
