Frank Sinatra - I Will Drink The Wine Lyrics

Someone said, drink the water, but I will drink the wine.
Someone said, take a poor man, rich don't have a dime.
So fool yourselves if you will, I just haven't got the time.
If you can drink the water, I will drink the wine.
Someone gave me some small flowers, I held them in my hand.
I looked at them for several hours, I didn't understand.
So fool yourselves if you will, you can hold out your hand,
I'll give back your flowers, and I will take the land.
And I will drink the wine.
Sometimes I'm very very lonely, there's only me to care.
And when I'm very very lonely, I want someone to share,
I'm going to drink the wine, I'm gonna take my time,
And believe in a world that is mine.
Someone gave me flowers, held them in my hand.
Looked at them for many hours, didn't understand.
Go on and fool yourselves if you will, you can hold out your hand,
I'll give back your flowers, and I will take the land.
And I will drink the wine, and I will take the land.
I will drink the wine.

Paul Orlando I think this song has one of the best lines ever written for a song
“Someone said take a poor man, rich folks don’t have a dime”
Which Sinatra delivers as if he’s thought about that for 30 years
But in the next line the writer says
“Go fool yourselves if you will, I just haven’t got the time, you can drink the water and I will drink the wine.”
Which implies the writer thinks the previous idea and line is a load of crap and he just wants the riches of life and again Sinatra delivers this as if he knows exactly what the writer is talking about.
The greatest thing about Sinatra is he gives meaning to the lyrics written and when he delivers the lyrics it’s as if he’s talking directly to you

  13. B.... L....

My interpretation of this is that he’s going for broke in life not just accepting what’s given to him he wants more than that in fact he wants it all.

  14. B.... L....

Huge Sinatra fan but am only hearing this for the first time, another stunner!

In May 1970 Frank played two charity concerts on consecutive nights at the Royal Festival Hall in London. These concerts were backed by the Count Basie Orchestra.
During October Sinatra recorded George Harrison's 'Something' for the first time with an arrangement by Lennie Hayton.

Two further charity performances followed on November 16 - again performed at the Festival Hall - the second, introduced by Princess Grace of Monaco, was recorded for BBC television and broadcast on November 22 - as 'Night of Nights'

Sinatra was 56 and fabulous. His voice was and is a fine wine to savor...
I love his inflections and expressions from 2:50 to the end.
Something so appealing and wistful yet hopeful, about how he delivers the last line:
And I will drink the wine...

    a.... m....

    54 he was, November 1970.

    a.... m....

Oh, is that the exact number? Thanks. : ) I was just listening and remembered he was born in 1915. This video says 1971, so I arrived @ 56, give or take...meaning he was in his mid 50's, sounding fabulous and luminous as he aged like a fine wine to savor, and goes with every meal. :). I got so caught up in listening...mmm... I love his delivery and tone always, but in this concert his voice (for me at least) is especially appealing and wistful. He was brilliant at every age and beyond this earth, I believe. Wanted to see if his fans here felt the same way.

  26. t.... a....

Incredibly materialistic lyrics. Disgusting, actually. The thinking that’s behind fracking, DAPL, trumpism... Perfect illustration of everything that’s wrong. Simplistic, lazy chord progression, could hardly have been a challenge for him. A misstep, IMHO. And I’m a huge Frank fan.

    t.... a....

I’d say the lyrics and Sinatra nods at the poor and the wealthy all in one and the line “someone says take a poor man, rich folks don’t have a dime” is a fantastic line which is thought provoking and Sinatra delivers that particular line as if he completely agrees with that.

    t.... a....

I think your comment on lyrics is too lazy and easy. ; )

    t.... a....

I do think yu do not understand these words

    t.... a....

Willemijn B. By that line he means wealth won’t buy you happiness

    t.... a....

You're not a Frank fan, or at least not one that has done their homework to appreciate the humanitarian he was. Though he became a Republican in later years, this was due in large part to the manner in which the Democratic Party had betrayed him. He continued to voice liberal values even as he became a Republican. His record as a humanitarian and as a man who stood up for the marginalized throughout his entire life, completely destroys your argument that he would support anything Trump. His daughters both condemned Trump for using "My Way" at his inauguration, as they were sure their father would never support anything to do with the hateful bigot.

As for the lyrics. Yeah, its about wanting more. Its about seeing more than the average person, and wanting to suck up every bit of life. Material or immaterial that's your call, the lyrics are metaphoric. Maybe, you do not like the music itself, but that was Sinatra, he sang whatever appealed to him. So in respect for the spirit of Sinatra, you as a fan, should keep it shut.

Fred you are talking total dog poo. Brown was a total ass!!!!

  46. T.... l....

I do respect your view that it could be referring to the flower people a la the former Mrs Sinatra.. Mia Farrow and maybe there is an oblique reference , but I doubt very much that Frank would be so petty, the meaning is of course as with many songs open to the listeners' own interpretation. The recording is from a concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London (1970) in the same concert he did a great version of "I Have Dreamed", he ended
with "My Way"... New York was not then in his repertoire.

    My hero

  48. s.... ....

You're right, this concert is really in London. It's a mistake of a nephew of mine, I don't often on my channel, excuse me bye!

  49. b.... ....

I don't want to sound like the insufferable know-it-all, but I found no record of a concert in Monte Carlo (it is ironic that Grace Kelly introduced him in London), let alone a recorded concert. This concert was done with professional cameras, so it was probably televised. I did find a concert done at the Royal Festival Hall in London (1971) that was recorded.

  50. b.... ....

Sorry Sir Thomas, there is no Royal Hall in Monte Carlo. This was performed at the Royal Festival Hall in London, England (1971). The Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly introduced Sinatra at this concert.

  51. s.... ....

This concert was at Royal Hall in Montecarlo, bye
