Frank Sinatra - I Get Along Without You Very Well Lyrics

I get along without you very well,
Of course I do,
Except when soft rains fall
And drip from leaves, then I recall
The thrill of being sheltered in your arms.
Of course, I do,
But I get along without you very well.

I've forgotten you just like I should,
Of course I have,
Except to hear your name,
Or someone's laugh that is the same,
But I've forgotten you just like I should.

What a guy, what a fool am I,
To think my breaking heart could kid the moon.
What's in store? Should I phone once more?
No, it's best that I stick to my tune.

I get along without you very well,
Of course I do,
Except perhaps in Spring,
But I should never think of Spring,
For that would surely break my heart in two.

Frank Sinatra I Get Along Without You Very Well Comments
  1. b.... ....

Frank was probably the greatest entertainer we've ever had
His version and Matt Monro's version run as probably the best interpretation of this Hoagy classic

  2. M.... L....

This is a favorite song of mine because I relate, sad but true. No matter, I love hearing Sinatra sing it because he KNOWS what it feels like and you can hear the emotion in his voice! He recorded it in 1955 but sang it often in his concerts and he knew what the words meant! Many of us love and lose, that's life. Whether it be a spouse, family, lover, good friend, or even a beloved pet, nothing lasts forever and it's often difficult to cope with. No one sings these "saloon songs" of love and sorrow better than Sinatra -- he knew!

  3. M.... L....

Sheer perfection! No one before or since Sinatra has made an impact on the audience like he did! Truly "The Voice" of the 20th Century! Absolutely NO one sings ballads as well. Nancy Wilson is a close second. Both are gone now, sadly, but we have their recordings that will carry us on!

  6. D.... O....

Wow....A top of the line performance by Frank here , don't miss it.......D.

  7. S.... B....

He missed one note!!! as it happened maybe 5 times in 50 years, it's worth nothing. So, he is not superhuman, after all?

  8. L.... S....

Fantastic interpretation 👍🤩Francis is the best🤗🤗

  9. J.... G....

This song fits like a glove for the CHAIRMAN. Beautiful.

  10. T.... H....

Totally relating to this right now, broke up with my greatest love three days ago knowing we are both in love still but knowing we just aren’t suited for each other. Frank has a song for every occasion and if my heart could sing out it would sound just like this.

  11. J.... M....

    perfection.

  12. S.... M....

Wonderful ! A perfect version of that song! Only Frank can do it !!

  13. 5.... ....

There is NO ONE, living or dead, who could deliver that song the way Sinatra just did.
Even some members of the wonderful orchestra applauded at the end of the song.
When he sang, his heart was in the song, and one could feel all of it. He was a great singer and a wonderful actor. The best!

  14. M.... B....

The best of the best I drink wine

  15. J.... G....

    Sublime

  16. J.... H....

    Unbelievably expressive and soulful.

  17. T.... ....

Last breath at the end: Control of deep emotion - if he thought of Ava at that moment tears would fall.

  18. M.... M....

"shall i phone once more?" -

Modern: "should i slip into those DMs onceee moreeeeee?"

    M.... M....

No one says once more anymore bruh

    M.... M....

@Michael NC did you think i was trying to be serious

  19. P.... O....

This is one of his best imo

  20. t.... l....

He was in great form that night.

  21. P.... O....

    This one's for Ava

  22. P.... O....

    Only Sinatra can sing this

  23. M.... ....

Ava was under his skin till the very end.

  24. M.... S....

I can't believe how little views this video has. This is spectacular. Frank is spectacular. Everyone should listen to this

  25. A.... A....

A Billie Holiday standard. Billie sang it with so much feeling. I love Frank but Billie owns this. Sorry blue 👀 Arnold Bourbon Amaral

  30. V.... ....

    Absolutely beautiful...💔

  31. a.... m....

I come here to soothe my own heart against Frank's voice. It's all I can do, now that my love has said goodbye...i feel so despondent and the torment never let's up, it never ends...thank goodness Sinatra is here for us in good times, and also the seemingly unbearable times...when we are nursing deep wounds that never seem to heal...but it one day, maybe I'll wake up and it all won't hurt as much. Till then, and long after, I'll rest in the shelter of Sinatra's voice. xo

  32. 5.... ....

Even the players in the orchestra applauded this one!

  33. R.... C....

Then there's tempo. Drag it out, the pain, the hurt the knowledge of the mistake made. So write some music, then add lyrics and once in a million you'll hit on this one.

  34. R.... C....

There's something about seeing the actual delivery.
Orchestration, Poetry, Delivery, this is what music can and should be.

  35. a.... m....

I love you, Dad. : ) Hope you love this as much as I do.

  36. d.... c....

I still don't see any "Blue Eyes." What a Lie!!

  37. a.... m....

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Sinatra sings this to sheer perfection and makes my tears fall more than any other ballad ever has. Yet it also makes me happy to be alive, if only to hear Frank sing this song. xo

  38. M.... j....

    THE BOSS

Frank at his best at 56.

  41. M.... L....

I love this particular version of the great song by Hoagy Carmichael, recorded by so many, but none as well as Sinatra in concert here in the early '70's. I was fortunate to see FS in concert a few times (and met him and heard him record, a real privilege and he was so gracious!) -- always the consummate professional and terrific performer. I particularly liked the way he always credited the song writers, composers, arrangers and his orchestra. That's what more performers should do today. Frank often said it was the musicians who helped his astounding and long career (almost 60 years). He was a very generous person, something most people did not know about him. He donated a ton of money to those in need, from his band members, to friends, to just someone he heard about and didn't even know, but was in dire need. (He got a lot of bad rap, usually from jealous people!) He paid Ava's hospital and other bills at her end, as he did for other people also. He often said he was lucky in his career, and he certainly passed the joy and benefits of it on to others in many ways. There will never be another balladeer like Sinatra.

    M.... L....

Wow - You met Frank and heard him record!!! When? What songs? Awesome!! I only saw him once live in 1980.

  42. P.... W....

Beautiful song and rendition by Frankie, the greatest singer of all time. I heard the original version of this song for the first time about 4 years ago when I really got fully immersed into Sinatra. I had tears streaming down my face, and not surprisingly, as I'm a Sagittarius like Frank is, and Sags are very emotional beings. The raw emotion and angst he feels, he draws you in and makes you feel it too. As I'm sure he was thinking of someone special (Ava?), you wind up thinking of that special one that got away in your life as well. That was Frank's specialty and one of many things that set him apart from other singers: not only was he a phenomenal singer, but a great interpreter of the song, which made listeners actually feel the emotion and the magic. If it's a sad ballad of unrequited love, you feel melancholy; if it's a swinging, happy song ("Come Fly With Me"), you can actually close your eyes and actually think of yourself on a private jet flying off to some faraway paradise. Amazing!
Thanks for the music and the magic, Frankie! I love you forever!
    💙💙💙💙🎵🎵🎵

    P.... W....

I agree with everything you said. There is and never will be another like him. ♡

    P.... W....

Patricia, I think you and I think the same. Those small town love affairs when I was younger,so much younger than today!,!!!and i always seem to get dumped.I used to put on Frank singing those ballads of hurt and i felt better. He knew,he'd suffered,he'felt all those feelings and i felt i had a partner who salved my broken heart 'cos he'd been there.

  43. F.... A....

He sings with so much feeling Sinatra's phrasing is so sensitive it's clear that this performance is being sung in a very personal way .Great stuff .

  44. B.... ....

    A true legend

  45. P.... R....

The Nelson Riddle arrangement is heavenly.

  46. D.... S....

When only the best will do.

  47. d.... h....

Too much orchestration. I think Chet Baker's sparse arrangement & less mannered singing expresses the sentiment of the song better.

  48. C.... B....

    Manic I meant to put

  49. C.... B....

Those people who don't like franks voice needs educated, he is manic , never be another like him , xxx

  50. W.... D....

He always had Ava on his mind.

  51. A.... R....

For me as a Performer (and maybe it is just me), I find this one of the most Moving of songs sung by Mr. Sinatra

  52. S.... E....

A difficult song to sing, but he nailed it! Too bad the sound is poor. I hope there may be someone who can upload a better rendition from this great concert.

  53. j.... p....

one in a million frank  why did avaever let him get away

  54. K.... M....

The effect of smoking had kicked in, but he'd learned how better to deliver. Just as good, but different.

    K.... M....

    agreed.

    K.... M....

    Kenneth Marshall more depth

  55. j.... s....

he does`nt seem to need an eye piece !!

  56. A.... S....

Probably his finest performance. Absolutely perfect rendition.

    A.... S....

    Ashley Spivack I totally agree.

I come back to this time and time again to be reminded that this level of singing is not in my imagination.

    Incredible

  57. j.... p....

  58. C.... B....

    A wonderful song !

  59. A.... F....

I would argue this is the single finest live ballad performance of his career. London, 1971.

    A.... F....

I agree with you, as well. Love the break in his voice. Those dusky notes of his, inflected with such poignant and perfect phrasing.

    A.... F....

    I agree also

    A.... F....

I certainly wouldn’t argue with you - in fact I’d wholeheartedly agree.

    A.... F....

would toss up with On for my baby on youtube towards end of his career-not sure the year.

    A.... F....

Listen to matt munro's rendering of this song you might have a change of opinion

  60. G.... S....

the sounds at 2:50 - 3:00 is pure magic

  61. 5.... ....

Oh, I love your observation. Ava broke his heart and made him the greatest saloon singer, EVER!

  62. b.... ....

Even with the significant booze and cig inflicted vocal damage at this stage of his performing, I can't imagine anyone performing this genius song as brilliantly. A master class. Likewise the Nelson Riddle arrangement.

    b.... ....

+blackmore4 We were truly blessed to see him.

    b.... ....

+blackmore4 While I agree this performance is brilliant, I have to say I think Chet Baker's version tops it easily.

    b.... ....

@Mitholas Easily eh? ;) Totally disagree. I think Baker's version is pleasant enough... for someone whose singing voice was at adequate at best. But in competition with the 1955 Sinatra version (on 'In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning') or even this live rendition with hammered vocal chords, even suggesting any competition is quite frankly laughable to me. Beyond the voice too, Baker's version is straight as a die. It has none of the beautiful deviant liberties which Nelson Riddle took with the chord sequence. But taste is taste, we'll just have to differ.

    b.... ....

blackmore4 sinatra was the best the world has ever seen an absolute master.

    b.... ....

There was NOT "signififcant booze and cig damage" at this stage in his career, this was the early '70's and he was still in top form. Furthermore, he was very careful with the "booe and cigs" -- he rarely inhaled his cigs (they were more of a prop) and as you age, you lose a couple of notes in the upper register but you gain a couple in the lower, as he did. When FS finally did quit, after about a 60-year career, it was NOT due to anything about his voice, he was starting to forget some lyrics, and being the professional and perfectionist he was, he just could NOT tolerate that. Contrary to what most people think, he did NOT drink on stage, he had hot tea and honey for his throat, a long-time habit. Afterwards, of course he enjoyed his JD but he didn't over-indulge. He was too aware of his career -- his musicians (among others) depended on him and he knew it!

  63. s.... ....

This version is more touching than the great "Wee Small Hours" studio recording of 1955. Great breath control and he really feels it. Ava broke his heart and made him the king of saloon songs...

    s.... ....

saintcruzin Bang on! Better than the 1950s version.

    s.... ....

Actually, I think I agree with you. I've recorded Wee Small Hours and Love it but keep coming back to this and not yet booked studio time to record. It moves me more and more

    s.... ....

    Chet bakers is my favourite

    s.... ....

Sinatra only recorded this formally in 1955, but his voice improved, matured, and he sang it often in concert, and I think the song grew on him because he sang it often. There's no doubt he felt what he was singing, that's why he was the best balladeer ever!

  64. D.... ....

Songs for losers, eh? I'm home...

    D.... ....

@Deedeethekingofqns Sinatra wanted to call the "Only the Lonely" Lp Songs for Losers. He should have, we got what it means...

Frank was at the perfect age here.

  67. B.... ....

isn't this song actually from a woman  to her deceased husband?

  68. k.... f....

    The orchestra are applauding.

  69. W.... M....

Me quedo con la interpretación de Chet Baker

  70. P.... S....

When I bought the album" In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning" by Frank in the 1950s This was one of my favorites. But couldn't find who wrote the lyrics. Then I got a computer. It's based on a poem by Jane Brown Thomson who died the night before it was introduced by Dick Powell in 1938. Hogy Carmichael composed the music.

    P.... S....

Thanks for the info-- I didn't know the origin. Great Sinatra rendition as usual.

  71. V.... B....

the best performance of the best ltics and music by the best

  72. t.... l....

he may have had his faults,as we all have, but that voice came straight from god.buble @co,jog on

    t.... l....

love your post and I agree.,especially about Buble, but I suppose he does his best.

    t.... l....

+djangorheinhardt Buble is good but, unless he is insane, he will realise Frank is in a class of his own.

    t.... l....

+Francis Artanis yes agree with that .Francis Albert will never have a successor .He was one of a kind.....the only one of his kind.I wish he could have lived forever.

  73. J.... H....

There was a bit of the Bobby Soxer left in his vocals. And the Goddess Still Haunted him till his final years.that and the roast was the same year of the this Performance ...And the Main Event was at least 4 years after this video..

    J.... H....

Yes and the first concert Frank gave, after Ava died Frank was singing " One for my baby" and according to a writer near the stage,  he seemed drunk and there were tears in his eyes, The writer summed up  this heart rending scene beautifully when he wrote,  " the ghost of Ava was right there next to him"Yes John, he never got over her.On the eve of him marrying Barbara he spoke to her by phone and still tried to get her back."Haunted" is so apt a word.!

    J.... H....

Actually, Frank almost dumped Barbara to reunite with and remarry Ava. According to Frank's close friends, Frank and Ava had been talking on the phone nonstop for months before Frank married Barbara, and they had decided they still loved each other very much and wanted to try again. Ava had agreed to remarry Frank, and they started making plans. Frank was over the moon and was preparing to let Barbara down easy. However, after a short time thinking it over, Ava finally told Frank she couldnt remarry him. She thought after many, many times of them trying to reconcile over the years and it always failing, she was very afraid of them failing again. I think it may have worked as they were 20 years older, and much wiser.
Of course Frank was devastated, and went ahead and married Barbara, who I think he loved, but wasnt in love WITH. The only woman he was deeply in love with forever was Ava.
I dont get Ava not taking the chance to be with the man she truly loved; she never remarried after Frank and I think she still loved him until the day she died. She kept a picture of her and Frank on her bedside table. Her friend said after Ava had gotten very ill, Frank would always call her; she could barely talk, but Frank would call her "Angel" (his nickname for her) and tell her how much he loved and adored her. So sad. I wish she would have just taken the gamble on Frank and they could have reunited somehow. I do believe it couldve worked out for these two lifelong lovebirds. There's a song Frank sings called "Taking A Chance On Love". I wish Ava would have taken it...again.

  84. J.... M....

If there ever was any question whether Frank Sinatra was THE master of his craft, all you have to do is listen to this song. He comes close to crying as he sings it. It's like he was singing it to someone personal. What genius!!
Years ago I lost something very precious to me; my kitty who had been with me for 16 years. When I was driving home this song was playing. I always think of her and end up crying when I hear it...and Frank gave it just the right expression that I have always felt.
