Frank Sinatra - Downtown Lyrics

When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go - downtown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know - downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?

The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown - no finer place, for sure
Downtown - everything's waiting for you

Don't hang around and let your problems surround you
There are movie shows - downtown
Maybe you know some little places to go to
Where they never close - downtown
Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova
You'll be dancing with him too before the night is over
Happy again

The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, where all the lights are bright
Downtown - waiting for you tonight
Downtown - you're gonna be all right now

[instrumental]

And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
Guide them along

So maybe I'll see you there
We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown - don't wait a minute for
Downtown - everything's waiting for you
Downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown ...

Frank Sinatra Downtown Comments
  1. D.... S....

This song is about oral sex right ?

  2. A.... K....

Does everyone know that Frank is making fun of this song, which isn't exactly Cole Porter. Occasionally, Frank felt compelled to do less-than-classic material to stay contemporary. This is one such case.

  3. T.... G....

Awful version, love Sinatra but who advised him to sing this. What’s all those grunts or wails in between the vocal lines.... I’ll tell you what, he had just had lunch with Petula Clarke and invited her into this recording, to show off one would presume, anyway he failed miserably with it. He realised it immediately after the recording, he wasn’t happy with it.....not surprised!!

  4. T.... A....

    MINIMUM WAAAAAAAGE! HYAH!

    T.... A....

    Thank you! Ha!

  7. F.... L....

    Se la rifaba frank

  8. .... ....

I came from Mrs. Miller version

  9. t.... l....

This is not Sinatra song really but he did it , perhaps it was a challenge, he sounds bored.

    t.... l....

On the BBC Friday Night Is Music Night tribute to the composer, Tony Hatch, even Mr H said that Sinatra sounded rather disinterested singing this

  10. K.... B....

    Love this arrangement

  11. F.... ....

    Ewwwwwww *downtown*

  12. M.... I....

    "Eeeuuuuuughh.... downtown!"

    M.... I....

Love Frank, but not sure why he sang it this way. Unless of course he was referring to downtown San Francisco...

  13. v.... ....

Everything he touches turns into gold!

  14. M.... F....

1:46 I think that's the highest note I've heard him sing.

    M.... F....

That's a G4. He hits a G#4 (and sustained too) in this song (go to 3:13 mark). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGFLcdw8e1M

    M.... F....

So you didn't listen much him then

  15. S.... D....

Frank does a great job here but the arrangement is embarrassing.

  16. s.... a....

For me, he sang it like he was taking the piss out of it, he nailed it but from this album, all or nothing at all is unreal and my favourite track, I loved franks voice in this period had a real mature edge to it

  17. T.... G....

I love a lot of Sinatra’s songs. This is awful... he was trying to impress Petula Clarke, who was there when he was recording it and as soon as he finished he knew it hadn’t worked, stormed out of the session and him and took Petula to a lunch date. I admire him for admitting it was a terrible attempt at trying swing a song that ain’t just meant to be be in a swing vein, but I have no respect for him allowing it to be released.............. In a word...Garbage!!

    T.... G....

Well not quite garbage , but not vintage Frank either, he could afford to mess around with garbage but it never tainted him, wish he hadn't bothered with it though.

    T.... G....

I'd think it's perfectly fine, if not for all those "ewwws". Wtf?

  18. R.... T....

    I have this album.

  19. R.... D....

So much better than Petula Clarks cover!

  20. E.... X....

    THE ONLY

  21. V.... M....

Cuando Sinatra la canta pareciera que quiere venderme alcohol ilegal.

  22. o.... ....

    he's channeling Reginald Van Gleason

    o.... ....

I love your comment, it's all I can think about when I hear this version. very true!

    o.... ....

Reginald Van Gleason the Third! Yes, that's the gag here. I wonder if younger viewers got the joke. Frank generally had impeccable taste in his material, and didn't want to do "Downtown," which is pretty far away from Cole Porter, but wanted to stay current in the mid-1960s. He did a great job with it, while, at the same time, letting us know this wasn't his cup of tea.

    this song is #lit

    J.... S....

Justin Sirkin it's really sad that they don't play songs like that anymore😔😔😞😞

  25. Z.... G....

This is the catchiest song I've ever heard

  26. s.... ....

Never knew Sinatra did this song. Pretty cool version.

  27. h.... ....

This is a bizarre version. "uhhhhhnnn-downtown" ????? So rushed. Can't believe Nelson Riddle arranged and produced this. Sorry, but this is pretty awful.

    h.... ....

Remember that Frank drank a considerable amount whenever he was recording....he was a functioning alcoholic...and at times they don't function so well.

But HE picked the songs to sing....

    h.... ....

I couldn't disagree more that this is awful. It's a matter of personal taste. You must not be too familiar with Sinatra's style. He made all manner of noises, grunts, growls and the like as a matter of personal performing style and interpretation for decades. It's one of the unique things Sinatra brings to a performance, and personally, I love it. To Sinatra, a song wasn't a musical hoop to jump through note for perfect note, it was an avenue for expressing himself, the purpose of art, is it not? Just my opinion...

    h.... ....

Great point, I had forgotten about that. I saw him in concert in Houston years ago and remember he did that.

    Thanks for pointing that out!!

    h.... ....

    The emperor is naked.

    h.... ....

"That's right bud, now let's get in the hot tub."

  28. I.... E....

    I love this omg.

  29. m.... m....

Thanks for loading this - haven't heard Frank's version for ages and forgot how much I loved it.

  30. J.... T....

    Mr. Frank could sing anything

  31. C.... ....

A long time ago, back in June of 1966, I heard Frank Sinatra sing Downtown. I thought it was great.  I mean who better than Frank Sinatra knows all about a swinging  goodtime Saturday night. He sang it, he entertained it--and he partyed it.  I was in hot water with people around me because at the time I so enjoyed Petula Clark singing it.(Downtown).  The late Sixties generation were into The Doors, an The Guess Who.  I never told anyone I liked Frank Sinatra singing Downtown, luckily.  I mean I got crucified by this high school for liking Petula Clark singing Downtown. Frank Sinatra saved the day for me. This miserable high school, I am referring to is Strathroy District Collegiate Institute,  Strathroy, Ontario, Canada.

    C.... ....

    How old are you

    C.... ....

    Probably 70.

    C.... ....

To you  AwesomeFox, to satisfy your curiousity I will be 65 this coming June, which made me 14 years young back in 1966. 1966 was really the last good year for North American society as it was normal. The counterculture hippies showed up in 1967 and little by little North American society (USA and Canada) went to the dogs, and so here we are today. One real good thing about 1966--no international womens day.

    C.... ....

Caseman78 that's amazing I wish I was in your generation man

  32. C.... ....

I like how Petula Clark sings Downtown, but Frank Sinatra sings Downtown the best.
