Fixx, The - Sunshine In The Shade Lyrics

Sunshine warming the small of my back
Whatever virtues I lack
You can't see until I move
Until I move in the shade
Sunshine in the shade
Sunshine in the shade
Sunshine in the shade

But then inside
Sometimes I feel so cold
Catching these self thrown blows
But enough of the future I see
A shadow belonging to me
Sunshine in the shade
Sunshine in the shade
Sunshine in the shade

Every man climbs a mountain
With the hope to make a stand
Every man makes a mountain of his life
A masterplan

Only hope
Light in the dark
Only hope
Light in the dark
Gives me hope

Sunshine in the shade
Sunshine in the shade
Sunshine in the shade
The shade of life
Gives me hope of
Some time and place

20 songs later on a Fixx mix and you recall just how damn good they are. 1:08 - 2:27 Other worldly

    Sunshine In The Shade : The tree of the knowledge of good and evil (עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע;

  7. v.... 1....

the shortest single of the 80s by far.. even the Ramones had longer singles by then

The Fixx at their Peak of Fame and a band like no other,It was always a treat to see you live :) Very polished live band as always! Was that filmed at Jodrell Bank?

  11. G.... ....

I didn't know Michael Bay was in a band.

  12. N.... S....

"strange 80s vid-styles" aside (and hey - no way, i -love- 'strange 80s vid-styles'!!! ;0)... the fixx was sssooo great; something just a lil' bit twinged dark-edged about them... sooo glad i got 'shuttered rooms' on cd to add to my itunes lib!! ;0 s'classic! :)

  13. F.... o....

I miss the days when you can wear your hair like Johnny from karate kid and still be manly..love the 80s!

  14. .... ....

    夏に合う曲だが、今年の暑さは異常

  15. f.... m....

    Such a great song.
    Such a terrible video.
But hindsight is 20/20 after 30 years.

    f.... m....

It's odd, but I have to disagree. I think the video's great.

  16. W.... A....

top ten band of all times. Strong song writing and creativity in this song!

  19. R.... W....

ONE OF THEIR BEST AND THEY HAVE MANY!!!!!!!

  20. l.... ....

Love this song and the Fixx...but man....did they really miss on the video front....nearly all their videos are laughable, visual messes.   I know it was the 80's......but look at Van Halen, The Police, etc. none of their vids were this awful.

  21. T.... !....

The guitar riff is ripped off The Police.

  22. F.... K....

love their use of the synthesizers

  23. C.... S....

entered Billboard Nov 17, 1984 .reached #69 ...reached #39 on Rock chart

  24. 9.... ....

This song hit me like an avalanche when I first heard it.

  25. C.... V....

    very good

  26. 7.... T....

Demonic!!! YOU MUST REPENT!!! JESUS IS THE WAY!!!

    7.... T....

    LOL! JK :)

    7.... T....

A spiritual band puts a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, Easter bunnies, and the Garden of Eden in its video for a song about finding light in the dark, and you call it demonic?

  27. S.... ....

The Internet killed the recording biz...

    S.... ....

    Absolutely

  28. C.... C....

one of my best top 10 bands

  29. S.... ....

    Merry Xmas from the Fixx!

    S.... ....

+SweetSweetWaldo the FIXX RULES FOREVER !!!!!!,,I LOVE THIS MAGNIFICENT BAND...!!!!

    S.... ....

The Fixx were my first ANGST band, you see, when I was 14-15 years old. These songs were just coming out and they still remind me of that time very much.

  30. G.... M....

    A serious long lost classic

    G.... M....

Gary Macrie It's not lost. Buy the damn album.

  31. J.... S....

80's music was so awesome !!!

    J.... S....

    It still is!

  32. f.... ....

    LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS VIDEO ! ! ! I miss the 80's. Cy Curnin ! ! ! deep sigh....

    f.... ....

I'm glad to hear that, because I'm planning to have Hollywood crews hire him to play the part of my made up character's magical dad, Grant Alex Feelgood who's an English wizard.

  33. u.... ....

its about sunshine in the shade! pretty clear!

    u.... ....

+uncbbfblives No I believe this song to be about mythology and organised religion. LOL. Watch the video a bit more closely and it becomes fairly obvious what the song is about.

The undulating images are cheeky references to organised religion: Adam and Eve, satan, The Tree of Life; fables: Paul Bunyan, Alice In Wonderland; The Chimpanzee: evolution and drugs and the mythological Santa Claus.

  34. A.... P....

Your song is 👌🏻, but I 🤔 that the music video needs improvement. I wish that I could meet you guys someday, so you could see how pretty I look with my hair down when the sunshine starts to shine down on my scalp. I notice that one of you jumped like a 🦘 in the music video. Was it choreographed?

    A.... P....

No, girl. It was mostly improvised. That was the 80s!!

    A.... P....

@Davey Givens I see! It's so hard to receive replies from celebrities on YouTube even though they're busy folks.

  35. M.... M....

Can anybody tell me what the hell this song is about?

    M.... M....

@M Mac It's about a Sandstorm called Darude.

    M.... M....

+M Mac Well, for me, tripping balls and listening to this in the 80's it was spiritual and about getting a glimpse of light in the darkness that surrounds us... "son shine in the shade".

    M.... M....

+M Mac One of the many cool thins about the FIXX .They didn't spoon feed you.Makes it interesting trying to figure out song and video meanings. They make you THINK!

    M.... M....

M Mac ......it's about two minutes and forty seven seconds

  36. B.... C....

Thank you for posting this. I was looking for this video on MTV a lot in 1984, and I only saw it once. Of course, I listened to the _Phantoms_ album many times. But when I saw this video, I never forgot the scene with the flashlight into Cy's head!

  37. N.... L....

It doesn't look like an 80's video. Good quality. Super Cool song. Cool the keyboard master and his micro

    N.... L....

@Ben Culture I don't care much about the video, i like the song, the keyboard is cool and the lights, well the place, i imagine a lonely place in the night and they play and dance and put those green or blue lights, that's cool

    N.... L....

@Norma Di Pardo I agree. I only saw this video once in its day, but I listened to the whole _Phantoms_ album dozens of times. I think it's my favorite of the first three!

    N.... L....

@Ben Culture In which album i find One thing leads to another and Saved by zero?

    N.... L....

@Norma Di Pardo That would be _Reach the Beach._

    N.... L....

@Norma Di Pardo I listened to "True Love" and I subscribed. I love nylon-string acoustic. I need one, but for now I only have a steel-string acoustic (and two electrics). I don't know the song, but I liked the harmonies, especially later in the song where it's just drumming on the guitar.
I have some videos, please check some of them out, too.
And also, I look forward to hearing you do a Fixx song.

  38. M.... C....

sounds like all of their other hits

  39. g.... ....

love this one from them...I like...Light in the Dark...Gives me Hope...

  40. a.... ....

    Great song. Terrible video.

  41. k.... r....

Very distinctive sound , an original band for sure.

    k.... r....

+kevin rynearson Distinctive sounding and original bands are in short supply and virtually non existent these days. The Fixx are brill! Great post and great point kevin.

    k.... r....

    +T Angelone
That is very true, most bands now are cookie-cutter groups where their image is more important than their music. The Fixx has never been one of the run-of-the-mill bands, and I admire that...

  42. S.... O....

This is one of my favorite songs from the Fixx

    S.... O....

IMHO this is actually the only song that is from the genre "New wave"
I actually like the "Adam and Eve" part of the video..the tree with the forbidden fruit.
Also notice the "noose" hanging of the tree...trippy stuff mang!

    S.... O....

+Scott O My thoughts exactly Scott. You beat me to the punch. I too saw the premise of the song in the undulating images in the video. Great post and great point. Thank you.

Cy and the Fixx are brilliant.

  43. S.... S....

    Love this video

  44. A.... I....

This is such a well written hit. You can hear how the catchy hooks are all there. Plus, it's got grit. It makes you want more. The sound of the 80's in this song are so refreshing today in this millennium, as yesterday. ★★★★★

  46. J.... R....

    Wonderful production by Rupert Hine.

  47. G.... B....

    love tmusic

  48. L.... H....

I 'accidently' caught a concert this tour of them. Whatta great show they put on. I was a fan from then on. Same thing for Radiohead. We had crappy radio here, what can I say.

  49. B.... ....

    Vet hard

  50. J.... O....

Definitely remember that Santa in the background. Don't remember it being played this fast.

WLS radio in Chicago dropped this from their playlist after a few weeks - it even said so on the printed Top 45 survey I might still have somewhere. I still have no idea why they would do that - record company problems? pesky fans requesting it a little too much?

  51. j.... ....

    FUCK YOU VEVO.

  52. B.... M....

This song is a time machine. Close your eyes and listen. You will be back in the 80's instantly. That's the power of great music!

  53. j.... ....

    Love Phantoms thanks for posting.

  54. 2.... ....

Love The Fixx. Phantoms is so underrated. Just look at what a boss Rupert is with his super-serious expression at 4:33 . He's a keyboardist with attitude. You have to be to get a cool headset mic!

  55. r.... ....

It's about being good in bed. With the lights out.

  56. r.... ....

oh yes, I remember this song now from one of my favorite 80's bands.

  57. J.... ....

They're simply fantastic... This new wave sound... oh my god... Absolutely own style!!! I love the Fixx!

  58. g.... ....

light in the dark...GIVES ME HOPE ...like that part

  59. A.... ....

I'm 45, but this song just makes me feel 18 again.

  60. n.... ....

I totally masturbated to this video

  61. G.... S....

Great number...Dig the meaning of this song....

  62. J.... O....

    Sunshine makes me sparkle

  63. G.... ....

This video= Happy Holidays from Hades!

  64. T.... V....

i had tickets to A Flock of Seagulls and the Fixx at the Paramount in Portland back in the thick of the era. The guitarist injured his hand and the Flock pulled out. We got a partial refund and the Fixx went to a smaller venue. So i got to see the Fixx in a TINY venue during their Reach the Beach period up close and personal. It was BADASS. To me they were the best two pure new wave bands of the era.

  65. S.... O....

I think there is a biblical meaning in the video, where the singer is around a tree with fruit..Adam and Eve type shit mang!

  66. c.... ....

"Stand or Fall" and "Red Skies" were early video hits off their first album "Shuttered Room". They peaked respectively at #76 and #101. That was in 1982 just before radio playlist programmers finally got the bright idea that maybe the songs in the increasingly popular MTV videos might actually have appeal if played on radio. So these two video hits paved the way for the band's 3 top 40 singles from their sophomore album "Reach the Beach" a year later.

  67. a.... ....

Didn't Red Skies at Night get into the top 40?

  68. c.... ....

@capitalsho They had six top 40 hits: "One Thing", "Saved By Zero", "How Much Is Enough", "Sign of Fire", "Are We Ourselves?", "Secret Separation"

  69. N.... ....

Great song - as for the video, lets not go there.
