Fitzgerald, Ella - Have You Met Miss Jones? Lyrics

It happened
I felt it happened
I was awake
I wasn't blind
I didn't think
I felt it happened
now I believe in matter over mind.
And now you see we mustn't wait
the nearest moment that we marry is too late!
Have you met Miss Jones
someone said as we shook hands
She was just Miss Jones to me
Then i said Miss Jones
you're a girl who understand
I'm a boy who must be free.
And all at once I lost my breath
and all at once was scared to death
and all at once I hold the earth and sky!
Now I met Miss Jones
and we'll keep on meeting till we die
Miss Jones and I

Wonder what it must have been like to hear this song live in the original musical.

  2. T.... H....

It still knocks me out and I'm 91 yrs

  3. G.... ....

Thanks for sharing the full version with the Verse and for inputting the lyrics. Excellent

  4. C.... T....

Great song and version. This is good too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YteZQN-nW30 Jump to 1:37 (it's the second tune)

  5. V.... V....

I heard this from a Kpop show called SVT Club. While the members were drinking wine, this music played and I listened carefully to the lyrics so I can look for it. I desperately look for it. And FINALLY!! ❤️ My music genres are way too different. From kpop, and to old songs like this. My ears are a mess. 😂

  6. E.... K....

But .. who is that lady ?

  7. D.... A....

I'm so not used to this ballad tempo. My compo plays this around 180 xD And then theres the Frank version, and the Chet version. Both of them are at elast 120 BPM, so this is just odd.

But DAMN the bridge is beautiful this slow when you're not thinking of those changes super fast.

  8. M.... ....

Were come the introduction before the theme from?

It's the verse. It's part of the song, actually an important one. Lot of tunes have it. Usually jazz players play only the chorus for easier memorization and impro. That's a pity for sure.

  9. o.... ....

Perfect. Once again, nice tempo (see Tatum & Webster).

  10. G.... ....

Too bad Ellen Page can't sing - there'd be no need to change the lyric, would there?  Thank GOD it's not 1956 anymore.

    G.... ....

Is there anything wrong with changing the lyric?

    G.... ....

@Kyle Hotvedt Yes, you tasteless dummy - it's Rogers and Hart, not Barry Gibb.

    G.... ....

Why Ellen Page would need to sing this? A woman can sing the original lyrics regardless of her sexual orientation.

    G.... ....

@Sylvio Jorge Pastene Helt Don't talk wet ! Only a lesbian would sing the original lyric -
    a normal woman would not.

  11. s.... ....

    great rendition. perfect.

  12. M.... D....

    This is so stunning. Wow.

  13. D.... R....

    Beautiful!

  14. A.... N....

Desperate for a backing track of this!! Any ideas?

    A.... N....

I hope you found one since 3 years has passed. ireal pro has backing tracks to just about all standards.

    A.... N....

There is one backing track for this now. I wasn't even looking but it's there

  15. M.... J....

    "Sir" Jones?
why not "Mr", was it to keep it one syllable?

    M.... J....

I don't know. oddly I prefer Sir Jones...

    M.... J....

on reflection though, "Mr" Jones does have more of a realistic feel. I withtract my "Sir" comment...

on reflection though, "Mr" Jones does have more of a realistic, common man, feel. I withtract my "Sir" comment...

It's because the original was called "Have You Met Miss Jones". The music was written by Richard Rodgers and the lyrics by Lorenz Hart for the musical "I'd Rather Be Right". The song was published in 1937. In the musical the song is performed by characters Peggy Jones and Phil Barker.
