Fates Warning - Monument Lyrics

There's a blind desire there's a drive
There's a need to leave some lasting feat
Something to hold, something to keep
A monument to complete

There's a written page there's a book
There's a search for something to say
Something to share, something to speak
A monument to convey

Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it passion or just a profession
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it passion or just an obsession

There's a photograph there's a frame
There's a time, a moment to confine
Something to save, something to see
A monument to enshrine

Is it performance, is it expression
Is it passion or just a profession
Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it passion or just an obsession

There's an empty room there's a blank page
There's a picture left incomplete
Something is lost, something remains
A monument to defeat

Is it fiction, is it confession
Is it passion or just a profession
Is it performance, is it expression
Is it passion or just an obsession

I'm listening to heavy metal since 1989. I like all kinds of metal, except deathcore.
The only bands I know that have NEVER released a bad record, is Fates Warning and Death.

  16. S.... J....

    Why chop up a masterpiece?

  17. S.... H....

Gene (Chaim) Simmons takes full credit. All rights reserved.

    S.... H....

I am surprised that he doesn't try to put out caskets of all of the hard Rock / metal bands

  18. J.... J....

Jim Matheos is a musical genius. period

  19. E.... S....

This one was the first prog metal song heard so since then I knew that i chose well . After that câme queensryche and dream theater but I m Still listening Fates Warning as my favorite prog metal band then some Pain of Salvation which is probably my second favorite one

  20. K.... M....

    Great, Great, Great Band.
    One of our main influences.

    K.... M....

And who are you? 😂.. (exactly)

  21. D.... ....

Come to Mpls PLEASE!!!!!!!!! Love you guys!!!!!!

  22. D.... M....

why did they cut the song?

  23. M.... r....

I cannot understand how there's people that criticize this prog metal genius, many bands inspired by FW.

  24. M.... P....

FW and Psychotic Waltz are best prog metal bands in late 80ś and early 90´s last century and probably today.Watchtower and Lethal too..but FW and PW are dimension up them all...unique,special.thnx matheos, adler, zonder, aresti and di biase.

  25. A.... E....

    Music in its purest form.

  26. T.... ....

No better drummer than Mark Zonder ever

    T.... ....

    I'll drink to that!

    T.... ....

    Cheers!

    T.... ....

    Monstrous player.

  27. D.... A....

Fates Warning marked my life forever! Ray Alder just about single handedly inspired my vocal work (Along with Tate of course). Fates Warning will always be my all time favorite band (without hesitation).

    D.... A....

Denny, I feel the exact same way. I sang for years and years, Ray was my favorite vocalist to cover, I love his tone and his phrasing. My biggest influence also, my band even named our original project "Perfect Symmetry". Yeah, kinda of stalker-like!!

    D.... A....

Denny Anthony Agree....amazing artists here...masterful compositions. Pure genius.

    D.... A....

    Denny Anthony
    No question.
    Feel the same.

  28. M.... ....

One of the greatest bands ever. I hate they were so underrated and didn't get the respect they deserve. Pretty much invented the prog-metal genre. There wouldn't be a Dream Theater if there hadn't first been a Fates Warning.

  29. R.... S....

OK I love fates and I don't mean to sound like a loser but who is the guitarist in the red long sleeve..I know Jim..so not him..the other guy...

    R.... S....

    Frank Aresti

    R.... S....

Frank is their long time lead guitarist. He left after Inside Out, but came back for the last two albums (contributing a few solos on the Theories of Flight album).

    R.... S....

What do you mean you do not know Frank Aresti? He joined the band in 1986 and was in the recording of 3rd LP Awaken the Gurdian , and all subsequence LPs until "Pleasant shades of Grey" , and maybe even some more (I do not remember for sure).

  30. L.... ....

This song is the definition of progressive metal.

    L.... ....

    indeed!!!

  31. J.... G....

this band has always kicked ass.

  32. R.... K....

Awesome, will be looking forward to finally seeing them in June.....been a long time coming

  33. P.... T....

I admit that I do not know anything about the band, but I listened to this song playing on SKY channels and I could never stop listening. Perfect! I speak from Brazil: D

  34. O.... S....

Jim loves those grey shirts eh. I must say it' a pretty pleasant shade of grey

  35. L.... ....

Inside Out is a very underrated album. How the hell Frank Aresti didn´t like its musical direction I don´t know. This song is sublime.

    L.... ....

LUCAS they really mixed up their musical styles across the first three albums they did with both Alder and Zonder on board, and I love all three. Perfect Symmetry, the minimalistic, bleak progressive metal masterpiece, Parallels, the more radio friendly, polished powerhouse, and Inside Out, returning just a bit to the Perfect Symmetry production. I also love Disconnected. Miss this lineup, but the current lineup with Bobby is excellent, too.

    L.... ....

I treasure people who talks sense on the internet. Thank you!

  36. B.... R....

One of the main reasons that I love Prog Metal so much!

    B.... R....

Do You know other bands of Progressive Heavy Metal except Fates Warning and Queensryche?

  37. M.... R....

    bellissimi

  38. V.... G....

Vocal lines are great!! Ray alder is amazing singer!!

  39. g.... ....

For those who don't know,Fates Warning are among the pioneers of Prog-Metal.They inspired Petrucci and Portnoy to form Dream Theater. And they're still producing quality albums, like ''Theories of Flight'' and touring.

    g.... ....

The right man from DT would be Kevin Moore, who played in Perfect Simmettry, as well in Disconected and some other songs also. He formed OSI w/ Matheos, an alternative prog style, something like that

    g.... ....

    Rons Dad
Dream theatre has said that Fates inspired them. Fates is an awesome band with incredible feeling in all pieces of music they come with.

    g.... ....

    Thanks idiot.

    g.... ....

    joey Leverton
    That's the best you got?
    Try again.

    g.... ....

I know this is late but how the fuck am I just hearing of this band now? Listening to an online metal channel and hear a song called eye to eye, got me curious to the band and have spent the last hour listening to many different songs. Holy shit jesus h christ I feel like my youth was deprived now hearing this.

Good to hear though, now you can catch up to all the albums you missed :).

    J.... D....

+mvunit3 I actually their first two albums on my media player, was listening to them yesterday, good stuff !

    J.... D....

    JJ - that's awesome :D . . .
Welcome to the club! Now be sure to hear their 3rd album "Awaken the Guardian", thats when the Arch era really solidified. And then experience the Alder era "No Exit" (4th album) and get ready for side B :D. This album, I believe is where "Prog Metal" starts to make its foundation. Then their 5th album "Perfect Symmetry" clearly defines the genre.

Then! haha . . . discover the solo album that brought back John Arch "Twist of Fate", and 2012's Arch/Matheos "Sympathetic Resonance", I think you'll be blown away :).
You have much to catch up on for the FW catalogue as well.
