Never watched much AI but I watched season 3 - and this moment I still have flagged in my memory as something truly exceptional. She's a truly gifted performer who conveys feeling, which is much more rare. Personally, I wish she was in an earlier or different age as her voice has so much color, depth and beauty to me it's bit lost on the modern genre of R&B, So I love the competition material as, for me, you can more readily see all that her talent has to offer.

Holy shit she is absolutely fantastic! I've never heard a more magnificent voice in my life, she gives me chills. What a beautiful, charming young lady she is too. Very sweet, very lovely. Just tremendous. Simon was certainly right when he said magical...This series was never in doubt. She made Clarkson and Studdard look mediocre in comparison and they were great in their own right.

Beautiful song by a beautiful lady. But who is El Dude telling her "...Enough of the Great Lady tour!....Get funky. Come back and rock"? Yeah, yeah; I know he's Quentin somebody who makes movies, but why does he assume competence to assert (stereotype?) Fantasia's "proper" musical style/genre? She can sing anything. If she sang nursery rhymes, she could make the Cow change her mind about jumping over the moon and make the Dish change his mind about running away with the Spoon. Fantasia.

This is the best performance I watched on Idol. Fantasia has that powerful soulful quality like Aretha...it moves you. It takes you to another place...close your eyes and it's an experience.

Hudson had an acting career ALONG with singing.....And I'm sorry Jennifer Hudson RIGHT NOW is more popular than Fantasia....plus the fact, The LA Times named Hudson the THIRD greatest Idol contestant of ALL TIME behind Clarkson and Underwood...and let's see....as far as music is concerned, Hudson won or was nominated for Best female R&B artist and best new artist (BET Awards 2007), Best R&B Album, best female R&B vocal performance and best R&B performance as a duo (with Fantasia ironically enough) at the 2008 GRAMMYS....outstanding new artist, outstanding duo (with Fantasia), outstanding female artist, outstanding  album (won)...2009 NAACP Awards....and a bunch of others from 2010-2014.....so Hudson DOES have awards from her singing....AND...Hudson elimination on idol was the 2nd most controversial in AI HISTORY....One more thing.....there are more NON winners that have done well than actual WINNERS....Hudson, Daughtry, Adam Lambert, Clay Aiken just to name a few.....And that show has proven in MANY seasons, the best singer doesn't win...Let's see....Taylor Hicks??? wasn't the best singer....Lee Dwayze?? DEFINITELY not....Jordin Sparks?? Loved her...but Melinda Doolittle was the best singer...Fantasia?? Well, she should have won the finale vs Diana.....but Hudson AND Latoya London were just as good....Phillip Phillips?? Are you SERIOUS??? he shouldn't have been IN the finale much less win it...Joshua and Jessica were the best singers....Kris Allen??? Yeah, you're telling me he was better than ADAM LAMBERT??? jennifer hudson just get awards and things cause the industry have alot of respect of her because of the death of her family but in reality people just not checking for her shes on every tv station every award she and she sell not a top seller she get more press then beyonce 

Jennifer did not deserve to win this season. She got better over time, but Fantasia was great from the start. Jennifer is not a better vocalist. They both are good, but Tasia is a better performer because she can capture the audience.

@ron campbell you are right...no disrespect to the dead...but it appears Jennifer made the bigger sacrifice to get where she is as far as fame. Fantasia's voice is so gd amazing that she is gonna get a piece of the pie REGARDLESS, but I believe she wasn't willing to do or sacrifice certain things for fame. Cream rises to the top. The music industry is evil.

I've listened to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Janis Joplin sing this song. No one does it better than this rendition by Fantasia.

I didn't watch this season, but I remember turning on the TV and catching this performance and thinking how mesmerizing it was. Beautiful.

Me too, I didn't watch this season. Didn't like the competitors, but when TASIA won, I couldn't believe it cause she deserved it over her competition. IMO. I was so happy when I tuned into the finale.

The two best performances in American Idol history were in Season 2 (Clay Aiken's "Bridge Over Troubled Water") and Season 3 (Fantasia's "Summertime"). I remember watching them both live on the original air date and getting chills - and I was just a little kid at the time!

I had to come watch this performance to forgive Beyonce at the Grammys.
