Fairport Convention - The Vision Lyrics

I heard a voice calling out to me
It might have been a vision, might have been a dream
But some things will come and some will go
We're only here a moment, don't you know?

And I don't think that I've all the answers
But I've got my share of questions
If I don't follow blindly
It doesn't mean I've lost my way
Because I'm still on a journey
Heading down a road less travelled
I think we're all going to get there
In our own time and way
Time and way

There's a bridge that leads us to the other side
You will know you've crossed it when you arrive
And everyone will have such a tale to tell
I'm going to quench my thirst when I drink from that well

And I don't think that I've all the answers
But I've got my share of questions
If I don't follow blindly
It doesn't mean I've lost my way
Because I'm still on a journey
Heading down a road less travelled
I think we're all going to get there
In our own time and way...

I heard a voice calling out to me
It might have been a vision, might have been a dream
But some things will come and some will go
We're only here a moment, don't you know?

And I don't think that I've all the answers
But I've got my share of questions
If I don't follow blindly
It doesn't mean I've lost my way
Because I'm still on a journey
Heading down a road less travelled
I think we're all going to get there
In our own time and way
I think we're all going to get there
In our own time and way
Our time and way...

I heard a voice calling out to me

Most sonorous guitar lead and Sandy with that beautiful voice, such tragedy, alas so it goes as the writer once said.

UPDATE: The name of the band IS "Fairport Convention."
My original question: What is the name of the band in this documentary? It's not stated in the title or the video description. Help! Talking about the band that had the terrible van accident in which some were killed, all injured. Around 30 minute mark. "Carry on with the memory of Martin" and not break up the band... 34 min. mark.

    C.... S....

UPDATE: OMG, how stupid of me! The name of the band IS the name of the video: the British folk rock band, "Fairport Convention." I thought it was about a "convention" like a festival!

    Martin Lamble - Wikipedia
    https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Martin_Lamble
Martin Francis Lamble (28 August 1949 – 12 May 1969) was the drummer for British folk rock band, Fairport Convention, from just after their formation in 1967, until his death in ...

    Thanks for uploading this

Ric and I were at school together and, depending on the reliability of my brain cells, I'm sure I lent him my copy of Fairport's very first album (the one on Polydor, when they were still influenced by American folk-rock), probably early in 1969. Neither of us at that time had the faintest inkling that he would become a professional musician, let alone become a stalwart of the band.......

  6. B.... ....

What’s the song in the very beginning????

    B.... ....

    A Sailor's Life.

This music will always be here....
And there will always be someone to play it.

Fascinating memories - spine tingling moment when Sandy Denny first sings

    So glad I found this.

  10. s.... ....

I enjoyed the doc, but the way it's organized I found a bit tedious. It's finally 24 minutes in that you start to hear some music and begin to understand what the band's about. Up till then, unless you're already familiar with Fairport Convention, the doc is less substantial and less informative -- to the point I was going, so what's the big deal here? I don't hear anything special at all till then. Way too linear.

I think that it was in 1971 that my then-wife and I went to a Traffic concert in Durham NC. We had never heard of the opening band, but they were riveting and played a kind of music we had never heard before (including a rock version of "The Ballad of Sir Patrick Spens," which I remembered from grade school). We were up in the nosebleed section, but we could see the short guy in a white suit, playing the transparent-plastic fiddle and dancing around the stage. We were instantly grabbed, and bought _Angel Delight_ the next day, then gradually the other albums. (Traffic were fine, but it was the other band that blew us away.)

Many years later (1984, I think), I was at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival and heard that Festival Tours of L.A. were putting on tours to Cropredy and I signed up. Being in Nancy Covey's group gave us a bit of a privileged position--we were able to attend something like three or four nights of FC rehearsal in a pub across the river; the bus took us to Oxford where we were lodged in a (vacant for the summer) women's college dormitory (no mud or tents for us) and then to and from the music site. (FC was the _Full House_ configuration, with RT.) And afterwards we were all invited to sit around with the band in a pub courtyard in Cropredy. A magical week or so. Since then I've gone to every local FC and RT concert. They've been very important parts of my life.

    Great documentary!! Great band!!!

  17. B.... G....

I am so grateful to Fairport Convention. They brought me back to a connection with my Scots and English background and heritage - long separated by the music of North America. Now back in my heart again - a lost son returns home.

  18. r.... m....

As much as i love the Sandy Denny years, my favourite album is House Full. Not Full House. Live album I can't find on Youtube.

  19. M.... B....

I've been a fan since 1970 when I first saw them at the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

  20. G.... S....

I’m a massive Sandy Denny fan
But Judy Dyble comes across as
A Very classy humble lady in the face
Of her exit from the group.

  21. L.... B....

the song Fotheringay does it for me tear jerker.unique band loved them for 50 years 😂☺

  22. T.... W....

    We love you Sandy.

  25. p.... b....

Interesting and nice documentary. But isn’t England such a dull, solipsistic country.

  26. B.... M....

I appreciate positivity and all but there's no dirt at all or very very little of the negative bullshit they had to deal with or the in fighting or the sexual tension with Sandy.

    B.... M....

    spoiled by American "reality TV"?

  27. b.... m....

Not only do I still listen to my original vinyl of L&L but know all the words by heart, a band I saw many times back in the day.

  28. M.... T....

I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall from 1973-76. My first memory of English folk music was hearing Traffic's John Barleycorn must die. I bought that album in Cambridge on market day. Fairport Convention gained a lot of air time on rock stations back in New York in the late 70's. I always stopped and listened to Fairport when I saw a video pop up on Facebook. This video was wonderful to watch, and taught me so much more about the group. I just might make it back across the pond to catch a show now that I am a pensioner myself.

I saw The Fairports and Solo Sandy Denny and every time I saw the group Swarbrick went through (no joke) 25 cigarettes during the gig.Now he's gone from (surprise) lung cancer.
    I HATE CIGARETTES.

    P.... K....

He was 75...lots of people who don't smoke die younger than that

    P.... K....

@Steve Veasey However, Mr Veasey -- you purveyor of arse-end logic -- far greater numbers of people who DO smoke die a lot younger than that, and in a very horrible and abject way, having devoted their adult lives to boosting the profit margins of unscrupulous money-grabbing mass-murdering corporations such as Philip Morris International that don't give a shit about the suffering of their victims.

  36. s.... ....

ralph mctell musician ?- that's stretching things a bit

    s.... ....

Ralph is a very good guitarist, you should check out some of his ragtime playing etc , before making such pratish comments

    s.... ....

@ sockington1 A ridiculous comment. Ralph Mctell has been known on the folk scene since the 60s as one of the best guitarists around.

  37. w.... ....

‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes’ is the most haunting music I have heard in my entire life. When I hear it, it takes me to places of extreme rarity. I am careful to not play it too often. 18:56

    w.... ....

that song shall follow my ashes to the shores of Lake Michigan...and forever be my memorial...Up North as we say here...a proper place to hear that song on a fall day

    w.... ....

yeah. When I heard that part of the video, I clicked "thumbs up". She was so brilliant, and that song makes me cry every damn time.

    w.... ....

I can't play it anymore. It makes me too sad.

    w.... ....

@Paul Gibby Same here. It's like I can hear her dying in it.

  38. F.... M....

Great docu - a story worth telling

  39. P.... M....

Thank you so much from the heart for putting this on youtube :)

  40. L.... C....

I heard about these guys, and Steeleye Span, in college when I was openminded. You had to tune into it--it needed attention to it and then I could hear how great it was. Contrast that with Van Halen, which was all there and no depth to it.

  41. F.... R....

    A very English sacking

  42. T.... ....

oh please...you fucking brits think you created folk rock?

  43. P.... ....

I learned Jimi Hendrix, note for note..Angel boG, real bog . Machine Gun (Band of Gypsies), Jimi Best, ever. from Tama Renata.

  44. P.... P....

    Wonderful...just Wonderful band and documentary.

  45. A.... L....

I LOVE FAIRPORT CONVENTION SO MUCH - they FEED MY SOUL, tell me THE STORY of LIFE. In particular, SANDY DENNY is my absolute favorite singer

  46. a.... ....

Simon Nichol was very rude to me, when I complimented him for playing on End Of The Hollyday on the second album. He's a no one from that day for me.

  47. p.... ....

A lovely, warm documentary that matches the feeling of the band. I wonder why The Pentangle never seem to get a mention, though. A different pedigree (although the two Thompsons are friends who have collaborated), but similar aims, I would have thought.

    p.... ....

IF YOU'RE going to mention Pentangle how can you NOT mention Steeleye Span???

    p.... ....

@Peety Kirby Their founder and singer did mention them in the video. This is as it should be, as SS are/were sort of cousins of FC. Pentangle and FC and its spin offs have no common pedigree, but their music shares similar objectives.

  48. N.... T....

I wonder where the Incredible String Band was while all this was going on?

    N.... T....

they had done 2 albums by 67 bud

    N.... T....

@chris tull my point exactly guy.

  49. R.... P....

"Rags,Reels and Airs" by Dave Swarbrick with Martin Carthy and featuring Diz Disley has always been a firm favourite from 1967.

  50. T.... ....

Richard Thompson is a gifted guitar player. -Dimming of the Day- is such a beautiful melancholy song. Mary Black's version is my favorite. David Gilmore does a nice cover too!

  51. f.... l....

Judy has a very positive, wise attitude and outlook. Almost more important that music the band made.

  52. B.... W....

    Absolutely Awesome Documentary

  53. P.... R....

Me memory correct, nightstage a tiny long gone club in cambridge. Not that cambridge!Usa.Took the train from suburbs.Dressed like one of the Gallagher bros.Thought I was hip.lol.Best gig,I forgot my dosh, not much 5 dollars in my pocket.Bought I beers, hoping the bartender would be kind.Anyways.Early gig perhaps 730 pm.Dave lit the firecrackers.Simon in fine form.Peggy and Ric so fantastic I tried to say cheers chat in Boston accent, they were so funny.Probably ,actually know they coldnt understand a word I said.Yet,back home told me mates about them.Oi,What did you do last night?Check out these legends. That I what I did alone.Broke.But so thankful.Lest I forget the best,Martin had a green t shirt that said Sloth!I said bad laundry? Aye he replied! The best.

  54. W.... M....

I knew Dave, we got pissed together. He was going to give up music when Sandy went...I persuaded him otherwise. R.I.P. Dave. Love you mate.

    W.... M....

@Wyatt Mann - Good on you, that was the right call, and we all are better for having Swarb with us for so long. That guy could make a band really move, and he told the truth with his fiddle. A fine singer, too.

  55. L.... B....

A few years back I was walking down the sidewalk with my boy and I was singing "Come All Ye" and he said, "Oh, Daddy, don't sing that, it's so boring." I said, "Really? It so happens I'm going to see the man who wrote that song tonight. Should I tell him what you just said?" "No! Please don't! I didn't really mean it!" So that night I saw Richard Thompson at a club, and, no, I didn't tell him.

  56. C.... B....

Sandy recorded 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' with the Strawbs in Copenhagen between 20 July and 26 July 1967, although that version wasn't released until 'All Our Own Work' came out on Hallmark Records in 1973. The version released on Fairport's 'Unhalfbricking' wasn't recorded until sometime between January and April 1969.

    C.... B....

It never fails to make me cry.

  57. M.... W....

I'm a big Iain Matthews fan. He's obviously taken care of himself. He looks like he could run a marathon.

  58. S.... W....

Saw forithgay live at the Roundhouse

  59. D.... S....

    Yet another vindication of YT and a place where good stuff dwells. Who Knows is one of the most beautiful and timeless songs ever written, and the rest of the band did quite well too ; ¬ }

  60. A.... B....

Thanks for the doco. very interesting. Loved the band so I'm a bit biassed.

  61. W.... D....

Still have the album from the 60's. Very important band. Really got me listening and playing.

  62. D.... J....

The 1960's... pinnacle before the slow inexorable slide into music mediocrity.

  63. p.... ....

wow,Dave Swarbrick really looks like Smeagol, pre Gollum days

  64. S.... L....

Saw Fairport (and their spin-offs) at concerts in the 60s and 70s and the memories are epic. Thanks for this.

  65. T.... ....

It would have been nice to hear Sandy and Janice do a little duet.

  66. b.... ....

Can someone tell me what the piece/recording is that plays in the background from @31:00-32:30?

    b.... ....

It's called "The Lord is in This Place, How Dreadful is This Place" from their 2nd album (1st with Sandy) "What We Did on Our Holidays" but originally titled "Fairport Convention" in the U. S.

    b.... ....

Clyde Courtney Thanks a lot Clyde! 👍

  67. M.... A....

What a great docu on one of the most brilliant bands ever!!!
    Thank you so much!

  68. B.... N....

    Such a great group!

  69. M.... D....

Thanks for posting this documentary. It is a great look back at a favorite band that continues on.

  70. o.... g....

I've never seen anyone play piano with their ear before

  71. B.... S....

I saw them in a small theater house `71 or `72 post Sandy Denny. My friend and I took dates and we all smoked a hash-like substance called kief. I remember Fairport were amazing and the drug made them even more extraordinary. I remember being paralized by the experience...we all were.
Liege and lief was an important record for me. Some how it fit in with all my psychedelic rock library. It was that important at that time. I still love listening to my Sandy Denny double CD compilation from start to finish. No female voice holds me like she does.

    B.... S....

Terrific memories Steve, thanks for sharing that. I read Sandy would do "tricks" falling off bar stools / down stairs for laughs. You didn't happen to see any Tom Foolery at any of those shows you attended? It appears Sandy may have been quite a character off stage.

    B.... S....

@Barry Steinhart No I did not know her personally sadly. I do believe she was not an angel, just human like the rest of us.

    B.... S....

    http://www.45worlds.com/live/venue/country-club/4

    B.... S....

@Steve Walker That's the thing, yes, so many of our major musical talents are nothing like they appear to us on stage or in their music...like Keith Moon for example. Haha, just kidding about Moon...but isn't true, many pure talents are nothing like the music they channel. In small music clubs(pubs) the talent will hang around and drink some after the show...this is my experience, so i thought you may have had some insight into that human side of Sandy. She was certainly difficult to work with and some times a down right train wreck. Maybe something like Keith Moon?

    B.... S....

    @Steve Walker https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-friday-the-13th-wasnt-a-lucky-day-for-20-year-old-singer-sandy-denny-84337967.html

  72. T.... ....

I watched this out of genuine interest and in the hope that I might be converted to believing in them being a fantastic band but I am left more convinced than ever that they were/are utterly boring though undeniably capable as players deserving nothing more than the footnote in music history that they already are.

    T.... ....

There is no way my mate Dave (Swarb') could ever be termed as boring, he was a larger than life character.

  73. S.... N....

Band is definitely a team sport.

  74. R.... L....

Pre-history to me; innovative music but do I like the nostalgia, the dream? I don't know.

    R.... L....

    yes they lived a dream

    R.... L....

@My Fake Name I enjoyed some of Richard Thompson's solo stuff later on.

  75. R.... G....

Tull and Fairport together in concert. Great night.

  76. P.... S....

    Thanks!

  77. D.... G....

fairport would have died by the wayside if it wasn't for Sandy....she was what grace slick was to the airplane...

    D.... G....

Indeed. I always wondered who would give a damn about Fairport after she left. Her recordings are still absolutely timeless, while those jigs and reels and the other stuff they recorded feel quite dusted today, because there is so much great folk rock out today. Yet there has never been another voice like hers.

  78. m.... j....

    thanks for posting - fantastic

  79. N.... ....

Fantastic! I could say more, but there's no need.

  80. M.... B....

    the best!

  81. T.... ....

rip the sweet , sweet Sandy Denny

    T.... ....

I have found her voice to be unsurpassed.

  82. T.... ....

Loved Fairport Convention . I saw them live open for Jethro Tull , Stand Up tour @ the great Santa Monica civic auditorium

    T.... ....

played Liege e and Lief and rocked the house

    T.... ....

    Thadmotor1044 What year was that.

  83. I.... S....

Gosh, loved their albums, but what a ghastly bunch of smug old stiffs they've become. Down with Fairports. Long live Maestro Richard Thompson

  84. S.... G....

Sandy Denny & Amy Winehouse: two of the best and most tragic singers ever produced in these islands. We’ll never see the likes of either of them again. May they both rest in peace.

    S.... G....

I had the privilege of hearing Fairport with Sandy at the Country Clubh numerous times. Out of the tube at Belsize Park round the back of the station, to this magical club that showed some amazing bands, but Fairport were the best - with her. When her voice spun its way into the corners of ths club, like some golden flying saucer, there was a spell, a total warmth, a wonderful feminine magic that wrapped its way around you then pentrated your soul. I have seen the best live, but it is Sandy that I want to hear, with this wonderful early band. My ears lost them with Swarbrick.

    S.... G....

    Amy Whitehouse was crap.

  85. a.... E....

OK "documentary" , but the years between 74 and 79 are missing....

    a.... E....

Appeared on Pebble Mill At One and other current affair/magazine programmes very regularly, so much that, as a kid/teen at the time, I could be forgiven (I hope) for thinking that was all they did. Today I still play through Award Session Jerry Donahue signature guitar preamps year out of production but still great.

  86. P.... B....

    Tug`s at my heart strings

  87. f.... ....

First heard in late 1960's. Love this band, Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny.

  88. A.... H....

without Sandy, i wouldn't have even noticed them.

    A.... H....

That's rather insulting to the others particularly Richard Thompson...

    A.... H....

But your wrong.without the band yu wouldn't have noticed sandy

    A.... H....

When she went Dave said that was the end of Fairport Convention and the end of his musical career... he was going back to the farm ... we got tremendously drunk and I made him go home (his parents house) and get his fiddle ... the impromptu concert in the pub later was spellbinding ... his pain spoke through the fiddle. It was concluded that it would be a sin not to use his talent. I'll never forget him.

  89. M.... F....

Thank you for a wonderful documentary. Fairport Convention provided and expanded a rich English tradition of folk music that will never be lost on any serious fan.

  90. c.... ....

    Great band.

  91. s.... ....

Fine, Fine documentary with some much needed and beautiful focusing on Sandy Denny! also:-  Ralph McTell ALWAYS  has a way of distilling and elucidating any era or subject he's asked about within the English scene... so important... almost as Important as reminding Joe Boyd that The Band were 4/5's CANADIAN !   (It's like callin' a Belgian French fer crise sakes...). AND what a sweet, sweet finale !!!!!!!!?!

    s.... ....

stevearle Canada is in America, so is the USA

    s.... ....

There are many Canadians who wish to distance themselves from the USA. since we differ in so very many ways... The "Americas" is simply a geographic term that does not imply or encompass political, social etc. factors... besides have you never heard anyone refer to "Americans" as specifically citizens of the USA?!?

  92. H.... B....

I was at Cropredy twice. In 1989 and 1993. Wonderful music, wonderful atmosphere. Hope I can go again.

    H.... B....

Friends of mine went earlier this year...

  93. D.... L....

Great Group as the Pentangle were as well

  94. A.... K....

Thank you soooo much for this!!!!

  95. H.... E....

I had the high honor of catching the lads in the late 90's at the Bottom Line in NY. Peggy was well boozed and apparently there'd been some kerfuffle earlier with Allen Pepper, the guv'nor of the Bottom Line. Peggy coated off Mr. Pepper from the stage to such expert degree that the paint was peeling off the walls. F*&cking brill' it was! The look on Simon Nicol's and Maartin Allcock's faces during the whole tirade was beyond pricelss.

  96. G.... J....

Electrified folk music was an idea whose time had come ... post-Dylan.

  97. R.... N....

I love that there are 6 downticks for this (no doubt there will be a few more). Where have these people been? Fairport reinvented traditional English/ British folk music. Oh well.

    R.... N....

Surely trolls, assisted by Ad breaks

  98. M.... ....

Im so pissed of that Jerry Donahue is hardley mention. This pisses me off. :-(

    M.... ....

Likewise, Fotheringay barely get a mention. Shortlived but incredible music

    M.... ....

Yes! One of the best guitarists ever. I think I read recently that he's not doing well, health--- wise. I hope I'm wrong about that Fairport Nine is absolutely stunning . One of their best. Glad to see you mention Jerry.

    M.... ....

Extraordinary guitar player, so tasteful but with absolute technical mastery. I read on the web that as of Nov 2019 he is in some difficulty following a stroke 3 years ago and is getting some support from stars: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-50450945 there is also a Jerry Donahue fund at: https://sweetrelief.org/jerry-donahue-fund/ As far as I can research this is a genuine charity, to which I intend to contribute. A small gift for a lifetime of musical enrichment from his music.

    M.... ....

Jerry is much appreciated, not to worry.

    M.... ....

My reaction as well, as his playing was unique for the time, as it remained for his entire career, and was central to the second run of Sandy Denny in the band.

  99. P.... R....

Love Em! As a punk/mod in the 70s.Buying me own records and such.Never heard them until a got a guitar,of course acoustic.Banging about.Someone gave me these geezers record.Fell in love.I Still can't play well. But I got a good idea of great music! Love Them.Cheers from Quincy Massachusetts!

  100. H.... N....

Found them by accident on you tube a few years back, have most of their catalog now...i wish more people today enjoyed them.
