Fagen, Donald - True Companion Lyrics
Crewmen of the true companion
I can see you're tired of action
In this everlasting twilight
Home is just a sad abstraction
Young men dream of fire and starshine
I've been dreaming of my own green world
Far across the reach of space time

Fagen, Donald True Companion Comments
Don't forget the other ethereal tune on this soundtrack. The guy from the Eagles. Don Felder. "All of You" "Snow time!"
is there any songs similar to this? anyone plz
In what way? Similar in the overall vibe would be "follow your bliss" from the B-52's, maybe "The Pump" by Jeff Beck. no lyrics though. Maybe "breaking ground" off Larry Carlton's solo album "Friends". Urrrmmm......Now I don't want to move. LOL
Bittersweet ode by a weary space warrior. While boys dream of fire and starshine, he pines for his green patch of home. Classic Fagan (Steely) take. Thanks for posting!
I loved this movie and later loved solo fagen and dan. What a awesome song S allllllways.
Whoa. Discovering this for the first time! (2019)
nice album cover..........
I never liked this song much.
As a teenager, this was such a rad movie. Being an early 80s D&D player, Heavy Metal Magazine just fit my reading needs. Still have issue number one in plastic somewhere.
🎶......😎..........🎶
"It's oKAY MAN, I know how to drive when I'm stoned. It's like, you KNOW your perspective's *FUCKED* so you just gotta let your hands work the controls AS IF you're straight."
Every live sound engineer I know tests a newly setup P.A. system with a Steely Dan or Donald Fagen track(s)!
Oh man!!! That keyboards, just Donald Fagen's Signature yeah
Heavy Metal.
Does anybody else hear Hey 19 when they listen to this song
"Young men dream of fire and starshine" so do some of us older ones!
One of Fagen's best!
My Boyfriend loves this album and movie .he had just gotten out from the U.S. Army when it came out
This is quickly becoming my song of choice when I meet up with my true companion… Cannabis😀
NAILED IT !
I'm sure some of you are trolling and some really genuinely don't know so I'll go ahead and put this here: this wasn't a "heavy metal album", it's the soundtrack to a movie called "Heavy Metal"...
Love how the guitar at 1:36 alters the time signature ever so slightly, meanders along making you wonder which way it's headed, then drops back to the original smooth melody. This song would be great even as a straight musical piece.
Just got this album for my Christmas, mint condition japan pressing. Worth a lot more to me than what discogs has it listed as.
Best song on the whole album. Donald Fagen outdid himself on this one for sure!
This isn't heavy metal, it's jazz rock.
Daniel Åsbjørnsson
It’s from the soundtrack to the motion picture “heavy metal”
Hypnotic......
Perhaps the greatest guitar performance by anyone not named Mark Knopfler
I remember the soundtrack when I got for my birthday when I was 16 years old and it’s amazing
Like everything Fagan did--- brilliant!!!!
I named my computer and truck 'True Companion'. Made sense to me!
Great song great album
A Nightfly outtake?
Awesome material, as always. This band is always full of surprises.
I never get tired listening to this song. Well orchestrated.
Traumhaft schöne Musik....
The mighty 80's ...and heavy metal on the screens....
Heavy Metal the movie brought me here, but 3:35 sent a shiver down my spine. I have loved this song since I heard a snippet in Harry's Cab.
I can hear hints of “Hey Nineteen” in the chord progressions. But otherwise an amazing DF composition that I’m hearing for the first time :D
This music to me is a Sunday morning, chillin' after a night alone with the party poppers, contemplating the week ahead
Thought this was Steely dan
I love how on this piece, one knows it's mostly finished when one hears the singing.
I HAVE TO SAY, for any in need of enlightenment, that although this album is called Heavy Metal, yea, the very sound track to Heavy Metal, as it were ...that the music included was a fine of example of other genres and really a producer's nod to an armful of grand musicians gathered under one roof. Don Felder (2 songs), Donald Fagan, Journey, Stevie Nicks and, yes, Devo, are names never associated with Heavy Metal, a term well established by that point. Many at that time (1981), who did not see the Movie, may have thought some of that was odd for a Metal album, but it was merely a soundtrack to an Animated Movie called Heavy Metal. However, the music, all of it, is a masterpiece compilation. It's Hard rock, if anything, with a smattering of Metal, but hey, the 2 roll together...
er, this isn't heavy metal by any stretch of the imagination, its a mixture of jazz , soul and funk.
heavy metal is the name of film for this soundtrack
Wow, did your mom have any children that lived?
Shane F
Not the most profound comment by any stretch
help me out please, was this Khan or Carlton on guitar?
chris stenberg Larry
@RikMan1025 NO, it's Steve.
A good movie indeed yes!!
Good nyborg..........
Soften your hearts, racist trolls. listen, really listen
As always, a great guitar solo, compelling lyrics, and ethereal chords. Music.
no one has or ever will make music like Fagan and Becker period....sad for us!
RIP Walter Becker
You said it right i was so happy to see them in concert in new Orleans best birthday present i ever treated myself to
I just wish i could of got their autograph
I'd be honored if some Donald Fagen & Steely Dan fans would take a listen to my live keyboard & vocal performances of JOSIE and HOME AT LAST on my YT channel in tribute to the Aja album and the legendary songwriting of Fagen and Becker. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.
Fagan was just the greatest ever!
there are about 5 living humans that can play that guitar solo! and Donald Fagan is just smarter than the rest of us mortals
Is Angus Young one of them?
Steve 'Air ' Jordon on the Yamaha Drum Kit laying down the groove of the gods...
sounds like it's gotta be steve khan on the geetar. so killing. so so so so so so killing. i don't think i've ever heard this.
sam ferguson it's Khan or Carlton few others can do this!
Marc Jordan blue dessert
Larry Carlton guitar......wow!
No. That's none other Steve Khan.
Donald Fagen is one of the all time greatest musicians...
nuff said.
For some odd reason, this song makes my car speakers go haywire; sound seems to alternate between drop-outs to back-and-forth accentuations (if that's a word).
I'm addicted
love that jazzy fusion piece , but how it has landed on heavy metal soundtrack remains a mystery to me !!!
Whyte Groovin maybe just because it was better than every other song on album?
https://movingtheriver.com/2017/03/20/story-of-a-song-donald-fagens-true-companion/
Essentially it was an excuse for him to get back into the studio and start making his own stuff.
Whyte Groovin because maybe it was just better than the rest of the soundtrack combined?
concord dawn "I swear I left my papers in my other suit."
So choice...takes me there.
Harry Canyon and Korban Dallas should get together and go bowling. - Multi-Pass !
THANK YOU
Nobody touches Harry Canyon unless I tell them to.
Super smooth
fantastic.just listen it since 1981 and it s still fresh in my ears.steve khan 's solo is amazing
dreaming of my own dream world or green world?
Green world.
camaro rider green world
Probably my fav track. The guitar tone during the solo is incredible.
jamie smith totally
It's the Gibson ES (Electric Spanish) 335
steve khan !! on guitar
Just amazing. Really. I can listen to Pantera songs and this interchangably. What does that tell you? I can't even fathom it.
Super-track!
Funny, I always thought the first line was "Grooving off the true companion".
The melodies and song are so cosmic! One of my all time fav Fagen tunes.
This song is a treat (and the movie isn't half bad either)!
what is the name of the movie?
This is the soundtrack from the movie "heavy metal", based on french and american comics (Métal hurlant and Heavy metal magazines)
Zeoph 'arn , have you seen the cartoon "light years", it was like French heavy metal
the loc nar
"What is this Loc Nar?"
It's a green probe that either corrupts the minds or kill those who touch it.
I was quoting Den from the movie.
"What is this Loc-Nar?"
"The queen's glowing sphere, you fool"
A lot of babies were made to this song.
I don't even need that long! oh
Do NOT drive stoned to this masterpiece...you will daydream too much and forget what exit you wanted to take...
been there haha everything just passes by so peacefully
How about not driving stoned at all? :p
5 yr Ca 215 I would agree. Get it home or get a driver. Not for a moment am I suggesting that you don't use =)
not the song to get high to..
Index Error_ yes it is guy
2:55 really loved that cut to the rundown world of New York. Great music. wish that part was longer!
alright... this track should have been replaced with something a little more heterosexual..
synth on a plinth oh, I thought it was on the space ship above the Pentagon..
damn jazz music all sounds the same to me..
@SGobuck This is Donald Fagen, one half of Steely Dan....
synth on a plinth I know who it is, that's why I said he doesn't belong on a metal album.
SGobuck Take it easy cum-stain on the contured sheets of humanity, your rampant homophobia is showing. Over-compensating much?
SGobuck; Not to mention, I've had athletes-foot that's smarter than you!
This is the singer and keyboardist from Steely Dan
Music to cheese out to.
OK why is this song on a Heavy Metal Compilation???
+Keith Barrett snessoll It's a great song but does not fit the Heavy Metal theme.
Keith Barrett
True heavy metal is more a state of mind than just a sound.
It fits, if you really let the lyrics get to you.
BECAUSE YOU'RE STUPID!!!!!
This songs reminds of sailing off the coast of California.
What a Sweet, Wonderful, Wicked playful guitar treat.
Steve Khan, baby...
from Heavy Metal but also reminds me of Blade Runner, not to mention a 1000 sci-fi novels by Pohl, Bradbury, Lovecraft, etc etc
+Thad Rosemyer According to Ridley Scott Heavy Metal was the inspiration for the cityscape of Blade Runner.
Not the movie, though, but the magazine, specifically Moebius' "Long Tomorrow" story.
@Vebinz Right, thanks.
takes me way back...I've always been a fan of steely dan...when I first heard this track it amazed me...
new York big deal my name is Harry canyon i drive a cab
@gorflunk Well, Im a Steely Dan fan, not a Heavy Metal fan beeoootch.
peter brando this song fit perfectly in they scene
I was giving her the stars and stripes ...forever
@AS J And your life is poorer because of the lack...
@Electric Rune Games No, not really. Can't watch or hear everything but Ive watched and heard a lot of good shit.
For me its a best track from that amazing album : HM ¡¡¡
Smooth stuff here . . . ~~~
True companion,by a true artiste.
Crewmen of the true companion
I can see you're tired of action
In this everlasting twilight
Home is just a sad abstraction
Just beyond the troubled skyways
Young men dream of fire and starshine
I've been dreaming of my own green world
Far across the reach of space time
and kanye west thinks he's the genius.
rocknative70 I'm pretty sure you don't have the musical education to school me on shit. I know Ella Fitzgerald is the greatest singer of all time. it doesn't change the fact she doesn't play an instrument. whoever the fool was that started the argument, said you must play an instrument to be considered a real musician. well...
Member?
Thanks for writing out this beautiful lyric.
Fagan / Becker rule!
"Kanye? He's never even worked with an orchestra!"
---Quincy Jones
Lots of dunderheads, like Kanye West, think they're geniuses. Some even think they're stable geniuses. Thanks for lyrics. :)
Member? Donald Fagen the only stable genius
Beyond space and time....:)
Who played this guitar solo? sounds like j. herington
@leegenix No..It`s STEVE KHAN SOLO, BOTH ELETRIC AND ACOUSTIC SOLO..
@pittyone Steve Khan is playing guitar, for sure
@Stephen Scott i`m agree, awesome solo
pittyone
...it's Larry Carlton.
If you are familiar with the music of both players, then you know IT'S NOT LARRY CARLTON and it can be no other then STEVE KHAN. And Jon Herrington got it from both these guys.
Anybody seen my Locknar ?
@C Mitchell The Locnar is mine!
H. K. Gigercraften no it's mine
Xxxander STUPID BITCH THE LOCNAR IS MINE
H. K. Gigercraften no, it's mine
Xxxander it's my locnar.
It sounds a lot like the Goucho music.
@leegenix I'll bet it's from the same sessions
Gaucho...?
Definitely reminds me of Third World Man
I’m hearing Hey Nineteen in this.
https://youtu.be/JOf5__WCpkc
There's something about this song that is inviting, warm and simultaneously a bit distant in one's own stream of consciousness.
@badoocee like Steely Dan
@badoocee
True.
The song is about a crew of space travelers. It seems to me to be an allegory for life itself, and our journey through it.
Pierre Bezukhov Excuse the late response...but I fully agree.
Something very real about that statement
I think many Dan songs have that quality. Intellectualism, fantastic musicianship, and the heights of, and the down and dirty of, human existence.
Awesome Track
If you don't like this, I feel sorry for you.
Donald Fagen is an awesome arranger.
funny thing that Donald said this track is "oh so gay" = P
http://www.theonion.com/article/donald-fagen-defends-steely-dan-to-friends-2601
Thank you for proving beyond a shadow of a doubt your epic trolldom, you fucking troll. You're not even the funny type of troll - you're just a fucking imbecile. Don't you have anything else to do with your life, like play in a jet black body suit on a dark highway?'
MoodyBluesKid i didn't, that's great news!!
leandro bortesi GOD, you are such a fucking douche!!!
My very favorite as well. Probably Fagen's best and would have been a great added track on The Royal Scam. Fits the mood of that album perfectly.
@***** Agreed! You know, Gaucho was another good contender for that song as well. It did come out at about the same time. I think another great genius behind all the Dan albums from the beggining is producer Jack Katz. He's the one responsible for the production style and quality up to the Nightfly. After that he's not in the credits anymore and the sound is very different. Never was the same to me anymore.
@Art Vin
Isn't he the one that got The Second Arrangement cut?
@Vince R Jack Katz? His name is Gary Katz
@TorchTaylor21 No he didn't- it was by was an unnamed assistant engineer
Wow, I never knew that about Katz. It's amazing what a difference in sound a producer contributes to a band.
And I agree, this song could have been on "Gaucho" for sure ... but this song came out 10 years before "Gaucho." Fagan's a feckin genius.
Such a sweet tune! His melodies create a lush landscape of feelings and ideas.
That's perfectly stated Andreas.
Lush keys, chords and harmony from Fagen. Plus, Steve Khan rips...
word up
He'd give a fuck, but he'd already gave it to the redhead ;)
beautifully said. I was born in 89' and I really wish I could have lived through that decade
