Fagen, Donald - Mary Shut The Garden Door Lyrics

They came in under the radar
When our backs were turned around
In a fleet of Lincoln Town Cars
They rolled into our town
Confounded all six senses
Like an opiate in the brain
Mary shut the garden door
Looks a lot like rain

Mary shut the garden door
Mary shut the garden door

We pounded Rachel's radio
For reports about the bridge
There was nothing on but static
Nothing in the fridge
We lay there listening to the wind
Whistling through the pines
When we heard the engines idling
Saw the headlights through the blinds

Mary shut the garden door
Mary shut the garden door

Rough dreams
Those voices in the kitchen
I woke up
And sensed the new condition
They won, storms raged
Things changed forever

Mary shut the garden door

So if you ever see an automaton
In a midprice luxury car
Better roll the sidewalks up
Switch on your lucky star
'Cause this zombie does impressions
But not really to amuse
This ballad is for lovers
With something left to lose

Mary shut the garden door
Mary shut the garden door

also - so few people liked it....However - it really sticks with you (alto i don't know what it means) but like a lot of SD songs, the message is just too mysterious.. but who cares????????????

Dear Sir Donal Fagen, and late Sir Walter Becker, i salute you! It's interesting how you created such great stuff together, as well as on your solos. Trying to understand this all: your tunes, your grooves, your lyrics... ... but I think there is nothing to understand. It is what it is, and it's up to me, and anybody else, to make sense and meaning of it all. All I can say is that your groove tickles my nervous system and percepiton, and your lyrics challange my cognitiion, and that's what matters and gives it value. I'll keep contemplating on your music... ...i.e., what's the meaning for me... while enjoing it al. Thanks, and keep pushing it forward Donald.

Something eerily haunting about this song.

  18. A.... C....

    punk Johnny long

  19. D.... Z....

Its about 9/11/01. Storms raged. Things changed forever.

    D.... Z....

I have read that Don wrote it about the '04 Republican convention, which was held in NYC.

    D.... Z....

I've heard Morph the Cat is about 9/11. Seems unlikely another song on the same album would be the same topic. I think this is just a creepy story.

    D.... Z....

ShinyTentacruel it’s about the 2004 Republican Convention. It’s a fact. Donald said so himself.

  20. D.... Z....

These minor 9ths and augmenteds are discomfiting. I do not like it. I hate it. I can't stop it either. :(

    D.... Z....

    That was awesome

  21. R.... ....

Only Donald Fagen could delivered so much horror in major chords. Can't stop listening.

    R.... ....

In a fleet of Lincoln town cars, haha

    R.... ....

How to make dischords acceptable lmao
