This song must have been inspired by many different things. Here's my interpretation; I think it's about a person that is being abused and can't take it anymore, yet all he/she wants is love. He/She is determined to change himself /herself in order to be loved and respected... It's a very strong song, yet so underrated 😧 Music nowadays sucks

From my interpretation I have this guy I have a huge crush on, and thing is. I'm a guy. So it refers to me abandoning my beliefs that being gay is wrong, and believing his lies just so that I can love him and or he pretends to do so in return. Lacrymosa obviously reused part of this song, because the pre-chorus to this "If you want me, come and find me. Nothing's stopping you so please release me." And the chorus to Lacrymosa "Blame it on me, set your guilt free. Nothing can hold you back now." Along with the lacrimosa chorus in the back are structurally/melodically the same.

I used to draw picture of me with my ex who was vocaly abusive & everytime I viewed those pictures now I cringe, & this song is about Amy trying to be loved by a person who obviously doesn't love her back. She's probably looks back at this song the same way as I look back at those drawings

Doesn't necessarily have to be an "abusive and toxic relationship." The other person may in fact actually love her but repeatedly does hurtful stuff- so "pretend you love me" might just mean he's doing stuff that people in love wouldn't do; and this song might be a plea for change.
