My guess is a reference to the cold war or perhaps George Orwell's 1984

He's was probably referring to George Orwell's 1984. And the lines " You've seen one war after another" must be referring to First and Second World Wars.

Love this Europe much better than the band they became with Final Countdown. First two albums were a lot closer to power metal than hair metal.

Europe has matured a lot since the 80's.
Their most recent album (War of Kings) is way better than the Final Countdown
They finally matured over the years and War of Kings is probably the best example of that.

Record label screwed them up badly.

The first two Europe albums were heavily influenced by UFO and Thin Lizzy (especially Thunder & Lightning era), that's who they wanted to be like. For the Final Countdown album, they went for a bigger sound to crack the American market, so their record company hired an American producer who worked with Journey. I actually think Europe went into decline when John Norum left. Final Countdown still had heavy songs like Danger on the Track and Cherokee but they became real poppy in Out of this World and Prisoners in Paradise.

@Doug Masters dont also forget On the Loose, the riff is pretty heavy too.

Celio Europe is a hard rock band unfairly accused of being a commercial, almost pop band, only for the great success of "The final countdown". In addition, Europe didn't search that success. Although they could sell many more records if they continued to make songs like "The final countdown" or "Out of this world", they returned to playing pure hard rock, selling less records. but being true to their music.

One of my favorite Europe albums and songs, as well. Must be their only album I still listen with pleasure since 1988 that I got it on tape. BTW, have you heard ZZTop's Master of sparks? http://youtu.be/D9FJmkt2Biw?t=17s  The riff sounds similar!

I like the abit heavier sound they had back on this album! so many awsome heavy metal-ish tracks on this one, and it was only their second album.. really great album from a really great band
