I think he’s referring more to his old addiction to alcohol than his old love Patty, more than cocaine, and definitely more than acid. I say that because during these years many biographies quote these years as times still trying to walk away from the addiction just like the rest of us. I grew up listening to EC in what ever band he played with but mostly self and then the later years. I’m proud of him. I still think and know that he can out play most of the legends because of his transitioning. Soul and music that intertwines like this does not come often. Talent comes and goes but soul mates with music is powerful.
