Eric Clapton - My Very Good Friend The Milkman Lyrics
My very good friend the milkman says
That I've been losing to much sleep
He doesn't like the hours I keep
And he suggests that you should marry me
That it would make his burden less
If we both had the same address
And he suggests that you should marry me.
Then there's a very friendly fellow who prints
All the latest real estate news
And every day he sends me blueprints
Of cottages with country views
My very good friends the neighbours say
And they perceive that I love you
So I suggest that you should marry me.

My version, modestly, isn’t bad either.
I like the McCartney version better but still good
Wow this is almost identical to fats original!
Just as good as Fats Waller's version.
You must be joking.
If you find yourself in this corner of youtube you're listening to a song which was originally a huge hit for Fats Waller, written though by a very nice man called Harold Spina (along with lyricist Johnny Burke). You may not have heard of Harold - so google him. He was a successful composer, producer and businessman. I know this because I rented a flat on the ground floor of his house at 2232 Vista Del Mar in Los Angeles, just off Beechwood Canyon. I was there for 2 years, leaving to return to the UK in May 1997. Harold died aged 91 that summer.
I too worked in the music industry and we spent some time talking about the differences between my time and his, and the people like Bob Hope and Anthony Quinn, and many more who sang his songs.
Harold was a character and I'm very grateful that our paths crossed, if briefly. Thank you, Harold.
Interesting and thanks for the background. Sad that Fats has only 16K views to 84K for this one. Eric the stronger brand these days I suppose. Great admirer of Clapton but sure he'd be the first to acknowledge Fats as the master of this particular song.
Nick West I just discovered this song very recently from a vintage compilation video. Out of all the beautiful vintage music, this song left an impact to me and I couldn't get it off my head so I had to search what the name on the song was. It's good that there are revivals of the song but I do love the original the most.Thank you for the background.
That's very interesting
Paul McCartney's version is also lovely. it's just a lovely song~
I can't find it on YouTube. Can you link it please?
You can find it as My very good friend the milkman by Paul McCartney

Love this song and the album even though it's different than most of what Eric Clapton usually does!
Nice one, Eric. Keeping great old songs alive and kicking, especially "Milkman".
Perfect!
When I hear this song I feel so good.

@caulinrocker1 that sounds pretty good.. I'll definitely check out the stream, thanks!
@donpinguin2 paul mccartneys newest album does perfect justice ... its very good and extremely true to the nature of the songs he covers ... and "my valentine" also has that golden oldies sound but still has that mccartney touch along with a slight darkness ... overall great album ... you can also catch an itunes stream of a performance of his entire "kisses on the bottom" album for a few more day on paul mccartney's itunes profile
@avalanchesuperstar yeah... well, I haven't heard clapton's or mccartney's album entirely, but lennon's "rock n roll" is definitely a great album!
@boge1967 no, it should be "when a musician gets old he remembers his roots and does a cover cd of some of his favourite songs" (lennon, mccartney, clapton, all of them!)
Great to hear Clapton's take on this classic and many thanks for uploading.
My dad had a copy of the Fats Waller version amongst his 78's and it was one of my favourites as a child - although I always wondered what the Milkman had against owls!!!
, when every singer is washed out he does a sad swing lp , and this as to be one of the saddest
I wanna hear your lp. Bet its great!
This is a great album and you get to see clapton display his colors and be sorta a chamilion. I like this new orleans jazz number and all the great musician who appeared on the album were awesome. It wasn't a blues rock record in the traditional sense but you did get a couple of blues numbers with some distorted guitar in their, but not to much distortion were it felt out of place. I think clapton did a good job with this record.
sweet version, excellent job!!
Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
such a great tune. Never heard the Clapton version, but he certainly does it well.
Thanks for posting! I just LOVE this song! Makes me cheerful :) Great record, too!
