Very nice song... but what is it about?

Grant Hudson....  generally the HIV epidemic of the 80's/90's and the gay community's fight to find medical solutions and stand up for their rights ....   in a nutshell.......

Like most Erasure songs, I don't like it at first and then about the fourth listen I love it.

Been a fan since 1986. What a shame they ruined this album with such terrible compression. The vocals are so heavily compressed, that Andy almost sounds like he is lisping most of the time ("A bitter parting" as the worst example). It's terrible. Don't get me wrong - I think the vocal performances are brilliant, but ruined in production. Also Vince's clever arrangements suffer as the compression is killing his blips and bops :( I bought both the vinyl and CD, I sure hope the vinyl is "better".

Does the vinyl version sound better? The uploader of this version boosted the audio levels.

I've been listening to Erasure for almost 30 years and this is hands down one of their best tunes ever. So happy to hear it, and it does get better every time I listen to it. But I have to ask, especially to all Erasure fans out there: is it me or does Andy have a very pronounced LISP on this song? I've never heard it before, ever, once, but it seems really prominent in this song. Very strange to hear. I noticed it the second he started singing (could be because I was listening to it on a pair of really good, studio quality headphones). I've listened to it a few times on my regular Apple/iPhone headphones and its pretty indistinguishable so I got curious and threw on some older tracks with the good headphones and no lisp that I could discern. Am I crazy? Is this something new?! I always thought he had a very crisp, pronounced voice, but this is something totally different. I'm not knocking it, just wondering what happened...?

You are not crazy. It sounds like he is lisping. It's due to heavy compression during mastering, I think. Such a shame, because it's a very beautiful track.

An Erasure classic.. that will be one of those songs that will hopefully be played for years to come like "A little respect" has been.. I hope listeners take on board the message that the lads are trying to put across instead of picking apart the actual musicality of the track.. the emotion that Andy Bell has put into this track to get his message across is commendable... as he says.. there's room in this world for everyone whatever their beliefs. sexuality or origin... great track gents... you should be very proud

Simply superb. I still find it agonising that people can put PSB into the same sentence. Vince is pure genius and Andy has become such a talent in voice and writing under Vince's arm. Nobody can create quality as this after 30 odd years.

As a long long long time erasure fan, this is very good and gets better and better each listen ... time to pat yourselves on the backs lads, thanks Vince and Andy, bless you both

The chorus and build up are great. But the piano chords in the intro and the beginning of each verse, sound too teeny bopper, and generic.

This may be a shock to you, but a lot of us have always wanted to be able to be married to each other. It's not about imitating heterosexuals, it's about being able to have the legal recognition of our relationships and the legal right to stand up for each other or inherit each other's property when we pass. I don't know how old you are but I have seen plenty of people lose their homes or lose their property to the family of their deceased partner because they had no legal standing because marriage didn't exist for us in those days. You may be asleep if you think that we're not still artistic or amazing. How in the world do you figure anybody played us when we are the ones who fought for the right to be married anyway? Nobody handed it to us. There are still people who want to take it away and if you don't want to be married to somebody that's your business but don't you dare try to disparage mine.

Lyrically, musically, vocally and melodically just brilliant. The layered backing vocals are heartbreakingly, hauntingly beautiful. Almost exactly 31 years to the day that "Wonderland" was released, Erasure are still bringing it to the table, and I'm loving it.
