Erasure - Still It's Not Over Lyrics

We crossed our hearts and never hoped to lie
For the ghosts along The Castro were just walking by
We went back to scratch and had to start again
Like a ring of roses everyone was falling down

We made a miracle
We had to come up with a cunning plan
A time for quiet contemplation
Dying on the steps of City Hall

They turned on love and turned their backs
And left us to a sheer attack
And I'm not really pleased with that
And still it's not over
The universe is big enough
And there's room for the two of us
And ignorance it isn't bliss
And words they can't hurt me

They held us all in very low esteem
We had to fight for our right, had to steal the scene
It felt so right to see the rebels run
Because we know that something good was being done

But you never gave a damn
We had to come up with a cunning plan
We were fighting for survival
We had to look the Devil in the eye

They turned on love and turned their backs
And left us to a sheer attack
And I'm not really pleased with that
And still it's not over
The universe is big enough
And there's room for the two of us
And ignorance it isn't bliss
And words they can't hurt me

They turned on love and turned their backs
And left us to a sheer attack
And I'm not really pleased with that
And still it's not over

(And still it's not over)

We made a miracle
Dying on the steps of City Hall

They turned on love and turned their backs
And left us to a sheer attack
And I'm not really pleased with that
And still it's not over
The universe is big enough
And there's room for the two of us
And ignorance it isn't bliss
And words they can't hurt me

They turned on love and turned their backs
And left us to a sheer attack
And I'm not really pleased with that
And still it's not over
The universe is big enough
And there's room for the two of us
And ignorance it isn't bliss
And words they can't hurt me

I've watched you sleeping for a while.
I'd be the father of your child.
I'd spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine,

  22. FabyMDQ

    Absolutely magically brilliant!!

  23. Grant Hudson

Very nice song... but what is it about?

    SonomaBill1

Grant Hudson....  generally the HIV epidemic of the 80's/90's and the gay community's fight to find medical solutions and stand up for their rights ....   in a nutshell.......

  24. farlow126

Like most Erasure songs, I don't like it at first and then about the fourth listen I love it.

  25. Stig Ole Spang

Been a fan since 1986. What a shame they ruined this album with such terrible compression. The vocals are so heavily compressed, that Andy almost sounds like he is lisping most of the time ("A bitter parting" as the worst example). It's terrible. Don't get me wrong - I think the vocal performances are brilliant, but ruined in production. Also Vince's clever arrangements suffer as the compression is killing his blips and bops :( I bought both the vinyl and CD, I sure hope the vinyl is "better".

    RaymondHng

Does the vinyl version sound better? The uploader of this version boosted the audio levels.

    Stig Ole Spang

RaymondHng The vinyl sounds just a tiny bit better, but is still heavily compressed :(

  26. Jose Ramon Castellanos Martinez

la mejor del nuevo álbum junto al single

  27. Jose Rodriguez

    Mola esta super bueno

  28. Rosemount Upstairs Apartment

I've been listening to Erasure for almost 30 years and this is hands down one of their best tunes ever. So happy to hear it, and it does get better every time I listen to it. But I have to ask, especially to all Erasure fans out there: is it me or does Andy have a very pronounced LISP on this song? I've never heard it before, ever, once, but it seems really prominent in this song. Very strange to hear. I noticed it the second he started singing (could be because I was listening to it on a pair of really good, studio quality headphones). I've listened to it a few times on my regular Apple/iPhone headphones and its pretty indistinguishable so I got curious and threw on some older tracks with the good headphones and no lisp that I could discern. Am I crazy? Is this something new?! I always thought he had a very crisp, pronounced voice, but this is something totally different. I'm not knocking it, just wondering what happened...?

    Stig Ole Spang

You are not crazy. It sounds like he is lisping. It's due to heavy compression during mastering, I think. Such a shame, because it's a very beautiful track.

  29. Tine Hemeryck

    Simply stunning ❤

  30. Andy Newitt

An Erasure classic.. that will be one of those songs that will hopefully be played for years to come like "A little respect" has been.. I hope listeners take on board the message that the lads are trying to put across instead of picking apart the actual musicality of the track.. the emotion that Andy Bell has put into this track to get his message across is commendable... as he says.. there's room in this world for everyone whatever their beliefs. sexuality or origin... great track gents... you should be very proud

  31. Justin Barber

Simply superb. I still find it agonising that people can put PSB into the same sentence. Vince is pure genius and Andy has become such a talent in voice and writing under Vince's arm. Nobody can create quality as this after 30 odd years.

  32. Alex Panchen

As a long long long time erasure fan, this is very good and gets better and better each listen ... time to pat yourselves on the backs lads, thanks Vince and Andy, bless you both

  33. ghostnation

sound's like something of Britan's got talent.

  34. Tann Tinn

    Love Erasure, allways!

  35. Gary Westwood

Vince rolling back the years with this...classic erasure. powerfull as fook.

  38. Vsevolod

It's remind me another Erasure's brilliant song - Stay with me

  39. Madfan68

Another fine tune by one of the most successful groups in the world. this song is Spectacular.... Can't wait for the album...

  40. carson foster

The chorus and build up are great. But the piano chords in the intro and the beginning of each verse, sound too teeny bopper, and generic.

  43. karlos kastanheira

Still It's Not Over for Erasure !!! Luv it*

  44. Michael Pop Photography

    beautiful :)

  45. Nathan Farias

Actually the queers have given up and are being homogenized , losing what made us so special. They played us and we fell for it ! We want marriage . A failed institution . Kids ,a station wagon, a walk down the aisle , ridiculous , the gays of the past fought to be who we are ,an amazing artistic subculture with cutting edge thinkers who questioned the status quo and it's fading fast as they drive their station wagons into the suburbs to be jack and Jill. Time to stop drinking the kool aid

    brettgibson

Nathan Farias well that's one perspective, but I don't believe that.

    George Martinez

This may be a shock to you, but a lot of us have always wanted to be able to be married to each other. It's not about imitating heterosexuals, it's about being able to have the legal recognition of our relationships and the legal right to stand up for each other or inherit each other's property when we pass. I don't know how old you are but I have seen plenty of people lose their homes or lose their property to the family of their deceased partner because they had no legal standing because marriage didn't exist for us in those days. You may be asleep if you think that we're not still artistic or amazing. How in the world do you figure anybody played us when we are the ones who fought for the right to be married anyway? Nobody handed it to us. There are still people who want to take it away and if you don't want to be married to somebody that's your business but don't you dare try to disparage mine.

    Nathan Farias

George Martinez get a civil union , if u walked down the aisle absurd

    George Martinez

Been married legally and happy since 2008. Screw civil unions.

  61. N Gauge England -Synthematix-

Erasure, please stop it with all the compression you use, its ruining your great music

    johnnyatab

You are right, this is way too heavily compressed.

    N Gauge England -Synthematix-

It kills all the dynamics mate, another great song ruined

    Mr AIRAZUR

I like compression and wish ERASURE's early albums would have been compressed like that.

  64. NothingHereMoveOn

Lyrically, musically, vocally and melodically just brilliant. The layered backing vocals are heartbreakingly, hauntingly beautiful. Almost exactly 31 years to the day that "Wonderland" was released, Erasure are still bringing it to the table, and I'm loving it.

  65. CarlitosDJmx

Just ERASURE and only ERASURE can create songs in diferent styles and harmonies without losing their escense....love the drama on Andy's voice and the sounds Vince put on the track.....BEAUTIFUL !

This is the most real song Erasure has written emotionally since Hideaway. Brought me to tears when I first heard it.

    Rory Jones

Tom Cella Could not agree more mate. Lyrically i think that this, Hideaway and Storm in a Teacup are just amazing

  89. electrosergio

    Magnificent

  90. SonomaBill1

thanks Andy and Vince.   can't listen without tears streaming.   For those of us who lived thru the entire tragedy, lost our scores of friends and loved ones .....     a beautiful and haunting tribute.    ......and still its' not over .....

    SonomaBill1

Adam Grossman.      I have deleted my earlier comments simply to avoid fools from not being able to discern intent.   My intent was the recognized horror of dying and not having choices  (whether from bullets or just abject ignorance)   ......   and burying your loved ones.    No specific intent to discuss the direction you decided to go.

    kukui79

SonomaBill1 Your previous comments were great. No reasonable person would have taken it in the direction that dude did. (Not to mention it's a classic divide-and-conquer tactic.)

    Adam Grossman

@kukui79 not at all. divide and conquer? maybe i just dont want to see anymore terrorist attacks here. You want to keep letting them in?

  91. Frederick Seamans

the feeling i get from this song is that it is a equal rights and or a HIV themed anthem.. either way I like it. WE MADE MIRICALS!!!

    brettgibson

Frederick Seamans me too. There are references to San Francisco and the struggles during the early days of HIV/AIDS, the struggles for equality and how it's still going on. It's a haunting song and I love it.

    Adam Grossman

Frederick Seamans please tell me where the reference to San Francisco is?

    Frederick Seamans

the song lyrics mention the Castro. Which is a gay district In SanFran.

  92. TheBlueoktober

Has an old school vibe to it. Doesn't in any way sound lazy or "like Andy solo". It's Erasure through and through.

  93. Klinikle

...And I thought the lyrics to Love You To The Sky were cliched and lazy!

    Scott Beckstead

Klinikle this is a beautiful song... don't think your opinion will be that of the majority.

  94. Kilder Ribeiro

    No doubt, a Beautiful song!
