Epica - The Essence Of Silence Lyrics

Something is wrong
My strength has gone
Thoughts are corrupting my mind

I can see I perceive this ain’t me

Something so strong
My mood has swung
I can’t get it out of my head

I believe that my mind misleads me

(We confuse)
Is it a doubt you try to hide
(Tangle and abuse)
Just have an open look inside
(We appear)
It’s just a dreary memory stuck in your mind
(Memory stuck in your mind)

Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Search for essence
Find the silence within you
(The essence is…)

You’re searching and bursting
There seems to be no cure
When tension endures
Delusions corrupting my mind

I can see I perceive this ain’t me

There seems to be no way
When light fades to grey
To get them all out my head

I believe that my mind misleads me

(We confuse)
Is it a doubt you try to hide
(Tangle and abuse)
Just have an open look inside
(We appear)
It’s just a dreary memory stuck in your mind
(Memory stuck in your mind)

Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Search for your essence
Find the silence within you
(The essence is…)

Make a start
Explore your heart

When a persistent memory
Penetrates deep in your mind
Allow the silence to destroy
Your thoughts in every kind

(We confuse)
Is it a doubt you try to hide
(Tangle and abuse)
Just have an open look inside
(We appear)
It’s just a dreary memory stuck in your mind
(Memory stuck in your mind)

Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Allow the silence
To wipe your thoughts away

Retrieve your balance
Use your senses to observe
(The essence of silence)
Search for essence
Find the silence within you
(The essence lies IN SILENCE)

Epica's musical and lyric structure is so complex and beautiful, each one of the members is amazing in their own way <3 (their drummer is underrated though)

  5. W.... 6....

Que buen progresivo , muy bien Epica !

  6. R.... C....

    Perfect

  7. Z.... N....

This song describes my state of mind perfectly. The chaotic guitar riffs and verse describe how chaotic the thoughts in head can be, and the harmonic chorus helps to calm it down. As I continue listening, it just gets better with the perfect mixture of chaos and harmony. The last chorus makes me feels like my mind transcends into the state of peacefulness. What a masterpiece this song is.

  8. E.... ....

If Doro is the first metal queen, I think Simone would make a fine queen today

  28. H.... ....

The most ironic song of all time : loudest song about silence.

  29. M.... M....

please read this article carefully till the end : sodom and gomorrah are some of the cities of the plain in which homosexuality was practiced by the people of prophet lot(lut) until god destroyed them. you know all metal ,rock ,rock and roll musicians are homosexuals ,gays ,lesbians or maybe bisexuals .sodom and gomorrah is back .everyone has a fate and it is their fate ,god s will and they have no choice ,god has arrange history and this world this way .and god destroys sodom and gomorrah and all cities of the plain to hide his love towards homosexuals from the public. homosexuals are awesome and they love each other more than heterosexuals. and god loves them more secretly .and homosexuals are more innocent compared to heterosexuals and also homosexuals are more up to date people than heterosexuals because homosexuality although was in ancient times but apeared in history after heterosexuality and heterosexuality was from the beginning .homosexuality is not a sin because homosexual people are born with it i mean god created them this way .homosexuality is evolution of human race . i am not a homosexual myself ,i am asexual but i love homosexuals .

  30. T.... ....

What do you mean by silence? Silence seems to be just drowning me more

  31. Y.... ....

The wisdom I see in this song is incredible

  36. C.... ....

Always like it when i'm not sure what playlist to put a song in

  37. A.... B....

    Shadow Priests' Anthem.

  38. L.... D....

Started learning this on bass. Holy shit these guys can play!

  39. A.... G....

Her seamless transition from standard singing to opera singing is so impressive. Simone is amazing! Epica gets better and better with each album.

    A.... G....

Anyone that says that she can't do this live is wrong. I've experienced them live and she's even better than in the studio.

  40. S.... ....

I see this song as an essay on mental illness. The lines like "I can see, I perceive this ain't me" and "Something is wrong, my strength has, thoughts are corrupting my mind." strike me as cries for help from a person that is dealing with severe depression and anxiety. The person doesn't feel safe inside their own thoughts and is angry about it (the harsh vocals) but wants some reprieve from the hell that exists in their psyche (the clean vocals). That's what I got from it anyway, and I love it.

  41. D.... N....

I FUCKING LOVE EPICA IT IS THE MOST EPIC MUSIC

    D.... N....

    Der Nerd Try Wintersun ;)

    D.... N....

Jan Ro nnah. shut the fuck up ;)

    D.... N....

EPICAN stupid fanboy. You don't know nothing about music.

    D.... N....

fuck you, i love Wintersun, but to barge into comment such thing like that in an EPICA video, it's not acceptable for me, it's disrespecting the band!

  42. S.... ....

I can thank WatchMojo for introducing me to Epica. I love symphonic metal and the choral and orchestral backgrounds accented by Simone's voice are so beautiful to me. The harder vocals and instrumentals are also a nice juxtaposition.

  43. F.... N....

It's insane how consistent and awesome these guys are.

  44. T.... R....

This is the first song I've ever heard from Epica, and hearing it for the first time today. All I can say is "Oh. My. God. This isn't music, this is a masterpiece."

  45. d.... ....

I could (and do) listen to this song over and over again!

  46. o.... ....

me dan orgasmos con esta canción, la voz de simone me tiene locamente enamorada

  47. k.... ....

Pushing the outer ledge of symphonic metal. The age of fem/symphonic metal is trying to close forever, but a few bands refuse to let that go gently into that endless night. Epica is at the frontlines of this.

XANDRIA is right behind. Everyone else seems to be self destructing due to jealousy, EGO, and ANTICS like those of one certain Floor Jansen the witch that killed no less than 4 bands so far plus the symphonic metal movement.

I am sad and excited. Dianne Geirsbergen rekindles my soul with her personality and LOVE FOR HER SONGS. Liv Kristine makes me want to kill myself as no one ever thought such a classy grand dame of fem metal would abandon Alex Krull they way she did for a therapist of all things.

Tarja may as well be dead as well as Anette Olzon. Delian is off and on.

None the less, this movement is hanging on by a proverbial thread by the likes of hundreds of non major bands and singers like XIPHEA, Ideal Zero, Voices of Destiny and lots of others. None of them would fill an auditorium let alone an arena the way Nightwish once did before they commited suicide.

Alas, TRAGEDY is a major theme to this music and I guess that has managed to spill over into the bands themselves.

    k.... ....

Nightwish filled one single MAJOR arena in their lives and that was the night they axed Tarja at home in Finland. MEANTIME, I have not noticed any shortage of fans flocking to WACKEN or LOWLANDS since Nightwish commited suicide.

So then, how are those major venues being filled? How about PINKPOP?

Symphonic metal was never about stadiums. That was all early 1980s with bands like Quiet Riot and Def Leppard. That was a hugely popular thing with actual commercial support behind it.

ONLY A HANDFUL OF FEM METAL and/or SYMPHONIC METAL BANDS HAVE ANY FORM OF COMMERCIAL SUPPORT. It takes that in order to ADVERTISE. ADVERTISING FILLS VENUES.

Consider: 2008, Within Tempatation, BLACK SYMPHONY. This was perhaps the single most ADVERTISED metal event in the history of fem symphonic metal. IT SOLD OUT VENUES ON MASS SCALE.

Not because WT is better than EPICA, XANDRIA, Leaves Eyes, Sirenia, etc......

but because they organsed a mass advertising campaign.

Nightwish guys are totally cheap bastards. I have known Marco for years and this is totally true. IN FACT> at one point those guys were trying to PULL ALL THEIR CONTENT OFF YOUTUBE AND HAVE PAY FOR VIEW ONLY ACCESS.

I personally stopped that in 2012 on the grounds to their record company that; IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOUTUBE, THERE WOULD NOT BE ONE SINGLE NIGHTWISH FAN IN ALL OF AMERICA, AND FEW ALSO IN THE WHOLE WORLD AS THESE PLACES ARE BLACKED OUT FROM METAL MUSIC BY THE ORGANISED RECORD CARTELS.

WT is symphonic, but no where near as polished vocally as Simone Simons, Dianne Geirsbergen, Sabine Edelsbacher etc.

Sharon knows this. She is a great gal and huge supporter of all the others, with exception of floor. That person has ostracised most people from metal.

  48. G.... I....

    Wow! Epic!.

  78. L.... ....

  79. l.... d....

    ROLON..... buenisimaaaa

  80. R.... M....

I love how this album combines the truths in buddhism with the offensive drive of metal. It's like transforming anger into striving for better. Spoke to the lead guitarist once, he appreciated that there's people who perceive the lyrics the way they intended.

    R.... M....

Exactly, when I first listened to Epica I simply loved their sound; now I love their lyrics.

    R.... M....

    +Adea Ad

You are correct about the new age being mostly bullshit [First and foremost it's a rehash of the New Thought movement exactly 100 years ago], but even within it are a few grains of truth - that said, many (not all) of the lyrics are more borrowed from spiritual traditions than what the new-agers are promoting (although there is some of that too).

    R.... M....

I know what the new age movement is, I've only used it as a hyperbole to make a point. It's not that the messages he's trying to communicate are bad, it's how they're written. 'be good to each other', 'don't let the stress eat you away', 'governments and wars are bad', 'don't use religion to hurt others', etc. are all nice, true and pretty much just common sense, not something profoundly deep. His writing style is also clumsy, he's swayed by unnecessary big words that sound cool, he's constantly repeating himself and has an overall naive world outlook *cough* quantum physics stuff he has no understanding of *cough*. He's just not good at writing lyrics.

    R.... M....

Adead And in that youve discribed the world. If everything is such common sense in his lyrics why do we in the world not follow it? Its not that common sense anymore my dude. As for clumsy...id say hip hop and pop has the most atrocious lyrics. "Repeat stuff repeat stuff repeat stuff." So in that regard in comparison Mark is deep.

    R.... M....

@Adead dude, he's not English native, so these "big words" you're claiming he's using might just be the literal translation from dutch and the way dutch people write. I've fallen in some of these pitfalls when creating official English documents and translating my Portuguese thoughts into English.

  81. A.... G....

1:33 that observe and later in the song again it's like a fking angel is singing it <3

  82. A.... G....

How beautiful can someone sing? Good, very good, perfect, fking perfect, dude WTFFFF so perfect and then you have Simone Simons <3

  83. A.... G....

    Eargasms all over Epica's songs

  84. T.... S....

I was sitting on a tree, listening to this,my friend appeared and said "What are you listening to?" then i give him my phone, and he listens to it,he runs away with my phone ..

    FUUUUUUUUUU

    T.... S....

Can't blame him tho Epica is awesome

    T.... S....

😂😂😂 You both have good taste!

  85. L.... ....

    I love this.

  86. R.... L....

    Plain Awesome!!!

  87. h.... s....

Give the name "The Essence Of Silence"... to a song which is only quiet in the intro.

  88. k.... ....

    OMFG, fantastic song!!

  89. M.... ....

the musicians of this band are HEAVILY underrated,as well as overshadowed by simone.they deserve so much more recognition, for they are so brilliant composers and performers, and some songs of their, such as this particular one,are the proof of that.

    M.... ....

People tend to listen to music with their genitals .____.

    M.... ....

my favourit things in this music are the guitars and mark's growls

    M.... ....

you are absolutely right ... I keep thinking why Tuomas Holopinen is the only composer who is recognized for being a mastermind ...
Mark Jansen is clearly a mastermind too!!! since he is the one who composes most of the songs of the band..
I don't get it, people never ever mention that.
Adam Slujtier (or something like that, I don't remember how to spell it correctly) was very good too! but he is no longer with Epica, but I remember when I started listening to Epica every song I thought "omg this is a masterpiece" I looked at it and it was Adam's composition ...
So sad he is not with Epica today
But still, Mark is a mastermind as well :)

    M.... ....

I agree. Tbh, Mark Jansen is the main reason Epica is my favorite band, he always was, because I recognized his work and identified myself with him from the moment I got to know this band... Simone is a great singer and songwriter of course, but I sometimes feel, as you are saying, that the rest of the band is forgotten and only Simone gets credit or whatever. Mark Jansen is a genius... he writes unbelieveble lyrics, in meaning and in technique. The band is so talented and original, it's one of the few female fronted symphonic metal bands I actually love, because they're different: they're heavier and softer at the same time, mixing brutal and tender melodies which hit you right in the face. Plus, they give beautiful messages, they write about politics, spirituality, religion, humanity, hope... All things good. So yeah, Epica is not just the ''pretty voice and face'' of Simone, which I love a lot also, but they're sooo much more!

  90. S.... R....

281 personas no tienen buen gusto.

    S.... R....

Sebas Randazzo Esparza muchos se han quedado tan atontados con el reguemierdon que ya no tienen remedio para comprender esto

  91. O.... C....

vocaly and musicaly there awesome but there to dark which makes the band for me not worth listening to they need to make songs that are not satanic maybe then I'll show some interest

    O.... C....

+Dan Lapointe how come this song has satanic element, would you mind to elaborate?

    O.... C....

+Dan Lapointe satanic? LOL. This song is about meditation. what an idiot.

  92. l.... s....

    symphonic Periphery ??

    l.... s....

    +lah stoner no,

  93. K.... P....

I saw them live and I have to say that the singer's voice sounds just like in the albums.

    Great voice.

    K.... P....

Konstantinos Pantelidis it does. saw them last month they were amazing

    K.... P....

In my opinion, it sounds even better live.

    K.... P....

    @Sofia Severi hell yeah ....:)\

  94. L.... B....

    The Essence Lies... IN SILENCE!!!!!

  95. C.... D....

    Wonderful song! love Epica <3

  96. G.... K....

i fully understand an feel it but more needed to be said.one must be able to break down each insterment an hear that then the lyrics an for me more needed to be said.

  97. G.... K....

all i can say is ok.then ask what the heck.the music is kwl but the lyrics-really?

  98. o.... ....

Played this at a country bar and thought is was gonna die.
