She sang very badly in this show, which I think is disrespectful, given the scale of the show. You can tell she did not train her voice, spent more time in front of the mirror than vocalizing. On the other hand, in TCC she had to work with the orchestra and the choir, that was reflected in her voice, which was excellent.

How do you train to avoid the effects of 3 month pregnancy?

She sounds amazing, as good as studio record and I have no idea about why are you keep bashing her? Damn even I'm tired of these hater shit and I can't imagine her situation.

She managed to sing very well during the course of this concert for nearly three hours...That is pretty impressive, considering the length and complexity of the structure/lyrics for each of these songs. These songs are a lot harder than say "Within Temptation" songs (which I do love, but Epica is on a whole different level)

+Justin B. I completely agree with you Epica is one of the few bands that composes really ambitious songs. They have very heavy orchestration and massive choirs and double kick drums through which her voice has to "pierce" , no to mention the amount of very high notes then sudden lows or the complexity overall so yeah she has to manage all that live and damn this was a fucking long concert. People just need to take a chill pill all of the very well known metal singers sometimes go out of tune, go flat or do not reach the high notes, Floor, Tarja or Sharon, Simone is no different. And on top of that I consider Epica as a much more complex band than Nightwish or Within Temptation.

+Andrea Salgado don't forget that Sharon's music is a whole lot easier to sing compared to Simone's. Also, the effects of pregnancy can be different for each single woman. Sharon may only have had small problems, whereas Simone could have been enduring severe pains (purely hypothetically speaking, I do not know whether eiter of them was in a lot of pain or not. Just saying that that could have been the case)

First time I watched this I was a little thrown off by Simone's decision to use her pop voice, but considering circumstances of weariness and being a live DVD, it was a wise choice.  Will buy this DVD despite the lighting.  Simone's baby bump is sexy.

Cool live rendition, I think they are an amazing band but Simone sings so freaking bad here... And all the excuses about her pregnancy/health issues/mental breakdowns/blah blah don't really hold water: if you are not in the condition to sing in a live record, well, just don't do it! It's a matter of respect toward those who are buying the record.

Amazing Epica ! 

Simone and the guys did a great job, in this 3 HOURS live ! Vocals and music are perfect. As Said by Bruce Shepard "It sounds as good as the album. They are awesome! " <3

To all the Simone's Haters: ok, this is not her best performance. Ok, maybe she's not the best classical trained metal singer, but don't judge the book by the cover. I have the dvd, and this is the 4th song of the show (Not counting the Intro, cuz she doesn't sing). She was pregnant, and she had to sing for 3 hours with a few rest (actually she changed 7 dress, seven short "pauses" in 3 hours. If u can call it "pause", running backstage to change the dress.). She started the show.. well.. not so good, but trust in me, she's perfect for the 95% of the show. No one is perfect. At least you can be sure she sing for real, and not lip sync, or playback. It seems to me that youtube is full of musicians. U can do better? y bother here, then?

How could anyone hate Simone? She's awesome!

I have the DVD as well. Personally, I'm more of a fan of Floor and Sharon when it comes to live performances. However, Simone did an amazing job in retrospect, considering she was pregnant. She's awesome.

I thought maybe her timing was a bit off, but it was an incredible powerful performance, and if nothing else, those little imperfections made it feel more genuine and emotive.

The show was about 3 hours, also she was pregnant...so I can understand that she keeps some energy for difficult songs like Design your Universe. It is impossible to sing so many hours without a BIG rest.
And I was so happy when I saw the past band members and Floor Jansen too.

While this isn't Simone's best performance, it's still not that bad. I've certainly heard much worse. The rest of the band was spot on. I've seen Epica live twice, and Simone's vocal performance was much better both times, but what I've seen of Retrospect so far is still quite enjoyable.

OK, I've had enough. This goes out to all those people complaining about Simone's voice!
This DVD has been recorded at the Retrospect event in March 2013. At that time, she was pregnant, so we can be pretty sure that she and her body didn't focus that much on the strenght needed to have a really powerful voice, but to nourish and protect the baby in her belly.
Congratulations to EPICA for this amazing show and all the best for the future, dear Miss Simons, Mister Palotai and cute little Vincent!

All epica's shows are awesome <3 Can't wait for my blu ray.

@***** The problem is, she said in an interview (2012), and I quote, "I'm taking a break from singing lessons but I want to take them up again because I like to work on the technique". Well... yeah, no time to waste.

The good thing is, in the same interview, she also said "It's on my "to-do" list for 2013". Thumbs up for that. We'll see on the next tour (yes, tour, not album, because she sounds good on the albums).

Yeah, what really bothers me in this DVD are the vocals. The rest is perfect. The guys are giving it all but Simone just didn't really come up big in this one (which saddens me a bit). The Retrospect peaks just seem to be a lot worse than the Nightwish / Within Temptation live counterparts... That's just my opinion, I don't want to start a war or anything. If you do not agree, it's fine.
