Only the first one "Karjalan kunnailla" (In the hills of Karelia) is a folk melody. Lyrics are Valter Juva's. The second is "Myrskyluodon Maija", (Maya of the stormy islet) which is composed by Lasse Mårtenson. The third part is called "Metsämiehen laulu" (Woodsman's song), which Jean Sibelius composed to Aleksis Kivi's poem from the novel "Seitsemän veljestä" (The seven brothers). This version of "Metsämiehen laulu" is the best, the strongest, the most I've ever heard. It needs to have power and will just like in this version. It's like Kivi and Sibelius would've meant it this way, a metal song.

And I thought this version of Metsämiehen laulu is terrible. Just dreadful. I prefer the original. This one sounds like a joke.

i have to say Finland has the better music than from where i'm from in Sweden.  

It would be best for us if Nordic countries will unite more strongly. Wipe out the EU and NATO, start Nordic Union. We would have all the unique countries watching each others backs, pushing towards peacefull solutions, not agitate anyone. Defend what is ours and respect others, easy living :)

Do you know if the music of that part is all by ensiferum? Or it contains citations from something?

I sang both of these songs while I was in a boys choir, although it didn't make any sense to me why we from western Finland would sing Karjalan kaipuu, since none of us were from that region.

I don't know.. I never paid much attention in history class ;D I know that most of the history classes were about boring recent wars, Hitler and Stalin and stuff, the Finnish winter war... Unfortunately.. I would like to have learned a lot about the ancient history of Finland.

I'm not certain what you mean by that. But I know I was wrong when I used the word 'hate'. We don't really hate it, maybe some of us are annoyed. Of course we really don't know much about the history of Finland.. 'Cause the Finnish writing system was invented in the 16th century. That's why works like "Kalevala" are pretty important to us.

Depends on how well a Finn knows his history. But most of us hate it when we are called vikings. We have our own mythology, we don't go to fucking Valhalla we go to Manala/Tuonela. Ensiferum hates it when they are called Viking metal. Of course some of us (maybe most of us?) might have viking blood, 'cause we've mixed with our neighbours the Scandinavians so much over the years (and Finland was a part of Sweden for 600 years), but it's not a part of our culture.

This is true. Finns never think that they were oppressed by Swedes. We admire your culture and Finland was equal part of Sweden. Everything good always came from Sweden. Things really change when Sweden lost Finland to Russia in 1809. That started the Finnish independence ideology.

And to be exact, Vikings were from the area known as Scandinavia: Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Scandinavia is part of Fennoscandia, wich includes also Finland, Karelia and Kola Peninsula. Finns weren't Vikings, Finland was more isolated and primitive than the "motherland" Sveden with lesser trade routes, smaller cities and more older ways of living. Our ancestors tended to keep themselves, focusing on their own land.

The laws of the Swedish kingdom were indeed pretty awesome and as far as i understand Sweden and Finland both still have stuff like freedom to roam.

Finland was since the end of the Viking era to the 1809 (the Autonomic Grand Duchy of Finland 1809-1917 the Romanov dynasty with limited power/parlamentar monarchy) the Historical East Sweden, about 1/2 of the historical free main Kingdom of Sweden with full parlamentar rights etc. Finnish and Swedish people were free citizens of Sweden and there was never serfdom inside the main kingdom. The Empire had totally different governing, laws and rules.

Many consider the viking era ending when the king of Norway, Harald the third died in the battle of Stamford bridge in 1066.
Southern Finland apparently became a part of sweden in the 13th century, which was well after Haralds death.
It is hard to say what happened before that because historical records ofthen mix finns, the sami and the karelians and apparently the first swedish crusade for Finland is a legend and there is no exact date for when Finland became integrated into the Swedish empire

It is quite hard to justify the notion of Finns having been vikings.
Vikings conquered and formed their own kingdoms overseas in Britain, France, Russia, Sicily and probably some other places.
Finding notable historical persons from the viking era is also quite hard, the only one i have been able to find is king Faravid mentioned in poetry and even for him there doesnt seem to be any confirmation if he was indeed finnish or if he was from Finnmark in Norway.

Not all Japaneese are samurai or ninja, not all greeks are spartans or all romans gladiators or legionari, sadly. Only a few have chosen to pick up and carry their legacy.
