Emmylou Harris - Deeper Well Lyrics

The sun burned hot, it burned my eyes
Burned so hot I thought I'd died
Thought I'd died and gone to hell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
I went to the river but the river was dry
I fell to my knees an I looked to the sky
I looked to the sky and the spring rain fell
I saw the water from a deeper well

Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well

I was ready for love I was ready for the money
Ready for the blood and ready for the honey
Ready for the winnin', ready for the bell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
I found some love and I found some money
Found that blood would drip from the honey
Found I had a thirst that I could not quell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well

Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well

Well I did it for kicks and I did it for faith
I did it for lust and I did it for hate
I did it for need and I did it for love
Addiction stayed on tight like a glove
So I ran with the moon and I ran with the night
And the three of us were a terrible sight
Nipple to the bottle to the gun to the cell
To the bottom of a hole of a deeper well

Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well

I rocked with the cradle and I rolled with the rage
I shook those walls and I rattled that gage
I took my trouble down a deadend trail
Reachin' out a hand for a holier grail
Hey there mama did you carry that load
Did you tell your baby 'bout the bend in the road
'Bout the rebel yell 'bout the one that fell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well

Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well
Well...lookin for the water from a deeper well

Emmylou Harris Deeper Well Comments
  1. P.... P....

This is some heavy music. Hard psychedelic rock with just a little bit of country twang. Emmylou's straight country stuff is great, but this Wrecking Ball / Spyboy material is even better.

  2. R.... P....

One of my favourite Emmylou albums produced by the brilliant Daniel Lanois. The layered, ethereal sounds are hypnotic

  3. J.... J....

Great cover of one of David Olney's many great songs.

  4. B.... E....

Hypnotic is exactly it. I first stumbled across this 2 years ago while struggling to come to terms w/divorcing my alcoholic husband. I was sitting alone one night, working at my spinning wheel, when this song came on. I stopped what I was doing and sat still, spellbound, crying, thinking this must be what addiction is like from the inside. Powerful, powerful song.

  5. J.... W....

who is in this band here?

  6. K.... E....

wow this is exceptional good Emmylou what a talent almost cowboy junkie Robbie R....
Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for this gem

  7. M.... ....

Just listened to four different versions: three bij ELH and one by Wailin'Jennys. I prefer the one we're now listening to. It is the combination of voice and band. Excellent!

    M.... ....

Maybe, but the Wailin' Jenny's version is closer to gospel, cleaner arrangement. That bodrun work is exceptional. Too many of the WJs are awful cell-phone versions, video and audio.

  8. N.... A....

The Neville Bro' s with Buddy Miller made this an awesome show live!

  9. C.... S....

    Hypnotic!

Excellent article and interview with Harris, including this album:

    This is the shit...

  12. R.... D....

Me too, but I think giving it a Native twist turns the song in another direction and I love those tom-toms.

  13. R.... D....

There is something about those tom-toms the way Emmylou gives this song a Native sound.

  14. T.... R....

    This band is incredible.

  15. B.... C....

A legend. Very good version. But I prefer (sorry Emmylou) the Wailin' Jenneys version.

  16. d.... ....

Holy shit... I'm shaking! That was absolutely incredible.

  17. m.... ....

Astounding. Great version of this. I love this band and the Wrecking Ball CD. A version I keep hoping to find on YouTube is the version from Sessions at West 54th. That was a great version, too.
