Elvis Presley - Early Morning Rain Lyrics

In the early mornin' rain
With a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
And my -pockets full of sand
I'm a long ways from home
And I missed my loved one so
In the early mornin' rain
With no place to go

Out on runway number nine
Big 707 set to go
Well I'm out here on the grass
Where the pavement never grows
Where the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
There she goes my friend
She's rolling out at last

Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver wing on high
She's away and westward bound
For above the clouds she flies
Where the mornin' rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home
In about three hours time

This ol' airport's got me down
It's no earthly good to me
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
Cold and drunk as I might be
Can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain

Been flicking between this version and that of Gordon Lightfoot. Can't decide which is better. What do other people think?

I feel bad for whoever thinks Elvis wrote this. Gordon Lightfoot's version is better. His style is better suited for it (should be, he wrote it).

  8. pg1171

Both Elvis and Gordon Lightfood did this song justice in their own ways. I'm not even going to try and choose the best version. Fabulous songwriting! Stupendous singing! Can't leave out Jerry Reed's version. It proves how good of a singer that he really was. Beautiful song!

  32. tackless

I came to this video expecting not to like this song by Elvis. But I was wrong he did a very good job. I would say in my opinion it's the third best version out there. With Peter Paul and Mary being first, Ian and Sylvia being second and Elvis a very surprising good third place. It's just my opinion so don't blast me on it.

    Greg Amerson

A great song writer, Gordon Lightfoot, a great singer, Elvis, who takes the music seriously and to heart and you have a classic.  This was recorded live in Hawaii.  After the show Elvis and the orchestra stayed on stage and recorded several songs without an audience, which they used as bumpers for the different segments of the main concert.   To repeat its all recorded live, just as you see it, no overdubs.    The complete session can be seen on youtube.
