Elton John - Ego Lyrics

Take a look at me now and take a taste of the money
I'm not in it for the bread I'm in it for the gravy, honey
Step on the thin ice lightly
And check out the show twice nightly
'Cause I'm on the stage tonight
And if the price is right
I will amaze before the light I crave the light
Blinding white I need the light tonight

Take a look at me now and take a look at my billing
I'm not in it as an extra, I'm in it for the killing
Inflate my ego gently, tell them heaven sent me
'Cause I'm so expressive and I'm so obsessed with my ego
My ego and it's message
Oh inform the press, invite the guests
I need the press tonight

Do you remember acting out your youth
A Romeo resplendent on an orange case
Do you remember how I would recite
And how I'd blow my lines and hide my face

Well maybe it was childish, foolish, before schoolish
Immaturish, lose your coolish
But I had to grow and prove my ego

Take a look at me now and take a taste of the money
I'm not in it for the bread I'm in it for the gravy, honey
Inflate my ego gently, tell them heaven sent me
Oh 'cause I'm so expressive and I'm so obsessed with my ego
My ego and it's message
Oh inform the press, invite the guests
I need the press tonight

Elton John Ego Comments

I remember this was played in the theater before the movie Thank God It's Friday started. 1978.
I was 9. I was with my sister who is 5 years older than me. We'd catch the bus to
    downtown Minneapolis to the movies.
Even then I thought this song was captivating.

  2. P.... W....

The question should be: Why didn't he write "Crystal Palace" on the train?

  3. T.... B....

Parts of this song are more like something by Brian Wilson. Much more complicated than most EJ songs, it seems to be largely forgotten now. It has time and key changes, an unusual chord sequence and a great lyric. Why do the public tend to reject experimentation? It's not as if this resembles Stockhausen or something, either - it's a melodic pop song, and a brilliant one at that. It was only a minor hit - there wasn't much incentive for John to do more stuff in this vein, so he didn't. Shame.

Tony Bates It’s just not a very good song. Sounds like one of the many unforgettable disposable songs from his later 80s period. This would be right at home on Jump Up alongside I Am Your Robot and Spiteful Child. Just pap.

    @The Fonz
God forbid the guy should experiment.
Not very cool after all, are you , Fonzie? I'd stick to mawkish charity bullshit about royalty if I were you. Nice and familiar.

    T.... B....

@The FonzI LOVE "Spiteful Child". In fact, I LOVE most of the songs on the "Jump Up" album.

    T.... B....

    @The Fonz It's a brilliant song

  4. c.... ....

Underrated. I think it probably went over most people’s heads at the time

  5. R.... M....

Very good song, reminds me of the Mael brothers.

  6. g.... w....

never thought this would apply to todays environment but boy it sure does sound like the current resident of the WH lol

  7. L.... M....

    Anybody here from the autobiography?

    L.... M....

I am here from Philip Norman's excellent bio Sir Elton. Had not heard this before but not impressed. Not surprised it stiffed.

and they return to haunt you when you get older....

  11. J.... R....

Rare without glasses. I remember this single

  12. J.... C....

    what a nice song
and elton is a very good actor

  13. t.... ....

I saw this in a cinema, played before a showing of 'The Last Waltz' - it was made to be seen on a big screen. Loved it.

    t.... ....

This was kind of Elton and Bernie's last waltz for awhile, so an appropriate backdrop.

    t.... ....

I saw it in a cinema as well but I can't remember before which movie (a different one than The Last Waltz though) Wish I could remember but it is just going back too many years. I was just a young boy at the time. I do remember liking it-that was before MTV and music videos were a rare thing at the time, and I wondered why.
