Elliott Smith - All Cleaned Out Lyrics
Here come your pride and joy
The comic little drunk
You call your boy
Making everybody smile
Who takes your pretty plan
After a little while
I saw you with your make-up running down
Now what's that all about
You say you don't want anyone around
Cause you're all cleaned out
You toss the empty beer
Not really as composed as you appear
A icicle inside
Wondering is this treasure, is this trash
Still trying to decide
About 5 o'clock here comes your clown
With the foot he's throwing down
But all you say is you don't want anyone around
Come not right now
There ain't nothing to dream
You don't want to think about it
I'm sorry you seem so stumped
And I'm sorry you think you have to hold your tongue
When your so pretty and smart
I'm seeing you caving in
Becoming afraid of all these men
That you've given your heart
I saw you with your make up running down
Now what's that all about
You say you don't want anyone around
Cause you're cleaned out
All cleaned out
All cleaned out

Elliott Smith All Cleaned Out Comments
this makes me cry but the big cry is waltz xo, or oh well okay
Another example of Smith’s ability to utilize established forms in creative ways. Very brief guitar intro and he’s right into the verse which has more complexity than virtually all pop songs today in the verse alone. The verse has two or three parts to it, depending on how you look at it and a brief but effective chorus... Repeats verse and then has a brief but effective bridge for contrast and then a few bars of guitar to propel him back into the final verse and the slightly drawn out chorus to end it cleanly and effectively.
He does something similar with Easy Way Out some years later.
That’s only the music though often his music and lyrics also relate very well together.
It’s a common and inaccurate trope that Elliott was self involved as a writer as he often directs his lyrics to a second person as in this case All Cleaned Out, Easy Way Out, Miss Misery, Between The Bars and many others. He was a social “poet” or lyricist as well as someone who could communicate an inner state... which he also does in this song as he addresses another “actor”...

I find those lines to be very touching and we don’t need to know the exact circumstances to form strong mental images to connect us to the “story” or “narrative” that develops here...

I think the best part of this song is the vocal melody
almost cried
dont be shy and do
I can never pick a favorite Elliott Smith song and stick with it. It changes as I change. Different moods and moments make me really moved by one song today, then another one tomorrow. Elliott's music is great like that. This song is my favorite song today. I can relate to it in so many ways. I don't want to write a novel, so I will keep it brief. I suffer from alcoholism, though I've been sober for over 4 years now. It was a source of pride for the first few years. Now I'm just frustrated all the time. I suffer from panic disorder, agoraphobia, dermatillomania, and major depressive disorder. Being sober has sucked me dry. I would say I'm what is known as a highly sensitive person, or to most people just fucking crazy. I find it hard, almost impossible to not be ruled by emotion. It's been a good thing when it comes to me being a photographer. I think people like me (crazy) tend to be really creative. That is when they aren't going through a period like I am right now, too depressed to do anything these days. I isolate myself, spending 99% of my time in my room. I have good days where I'm able to be "normal" to some extent. But I feel like those days are becoming fewer and farther in between.
I hope you are doing ok Carrie..
don't worry as you saw it comes and goes and there are reasons to that, you can do things with that, just don't be too afraid. Of nothing I mean please. I hope I will serve to somebody. I know what you feel just different drug.
Just always know guys. That there always will be another Elliott Smith fan thinking about all of you. We just are like that. And for the favorite song change. It's been it like the beginning for me. And at the time I was still on drugs and kinda cool about being depressed.
And I saw a lot of comments like it, I just don't know it's funny, I guess it's another thing we mostly all have in common
<3 wondering is this treasure, is this trash
I relate to this so well I could have written it myself, minus the Photographer career, which sounds really awesome, btw. I consider myself a creative and overly sensitive person. At over 13 years sober now from drugs and alcohol, no therapy or antidepressant has ever helped for long. So many things easily become an addiction and I would give anything to be a normal person who can live in some form of a world of moderation but I don't think it's possible for me. Good days and bad days but more bad days - the state of our world and country isn't helping. Evil has been unleashed upon us, in case some haven't noticed.
This song is a near perfect example or snapshot of his magic in a nutshell
This song means a lot to me. :)
Sadly underrated Elliott Smith song. Why isn't this on more top 10 lists for him?
I really want to hear from you all what some of your fav's are..
