Ella Fitzgerald - How Long Has This Been Going On? Lyrics

'Neath the stars, at bazaars
Often I've had to caress men
Five or ten, dollars then, I'd collect from all those yes-men
Don't be sad, I must add, that they meant no more than chess-men

Darling, can't you see?
'Twas for charity?
Though these lips have made slips, it was never really serious
Who'd have thought, I'd be brought to a state that's so delirious?

I could cry salty tears
Where have I been all these years?
Little wow, tell me now
How long has this been goin' on?

There were chills up my spine
And some thrills I can't define
Listen sweet, I repeat
How long has this been goin' on?

Oh, I feel that I could melt
Into heaven I'm hurled
I know how Columbus felt
Finding another world

Kiss me once, then once more
What a dunce I was before
What a break, for heaven's sake
How long has this been goin' on?

[spoken]
Kiss me twice, once more, thrice, make it four

What a break, for heaven's sake
How long has this been goin' on?

Certainly gives me chills up my spine. I love both versions -Ella & Sarah Vaughan. Beautiful.🥰

“when you are a librarian and some fashion models came and do a photo shoot in your library without your permission and the photographer gives you a kiss”

  3. G.... B....

Ella's voice is the closest thing to a chorus of angels

  4. A.... B....

    Wow that phrasing. Beautifully sung❤

    Whose orchestration/arrangement?

Ella gave us the wonderful gift of sharing her perfect instrument with us for so many years. She could do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. I love Barbra, but Ella had that something extra that wrapped us in joy! Thank God that she was recorded for us to enjoy for eternity!! (and her name was given to my granddaughter

  7. M.... M....

    Kind of boring

  8. L.... D....

My mother loved Ella, always said she had the voice of a young girl!

  9. G.... W....

Ella will always be a treasure to listen too love her voice

What a genius. Her and Billie Holiday were different sides of the same coin. Taken together their music embodies the complete human experience.

    W.... X....

Billie Holiday does not belong in the same sentence as Ella

    W.... X....

@Michael Anderson Both are fantastic, but apples and oranges

I just don't enjoy Billie Holiday's voice. It seems far more limited than Ella's. Still, if musicians like Lester Young thought she was brilliant, I'm not going to contradict them. I must be missing something. The one song of hers that I've listened to and liked was Strange Fruit, and I must admit that moved me very deeply. I occasionally listen to the odd Billie Holiday number in the hope of finding another song of hers I like, but I never have. Ach well, there's still lots of Ella that I've never heard, as well as the ones I already know and like to replay.

    Thank you!

  12. V.... T....

where does all that first verse come from ?

    V.... T....

    Most songs do!

    V.... T....

They are often quite hard to find.

In classical parlance, it's called the recitativo. It's just an intro to set the psychological context for the lyrics that follow.

    @corlyssd
In a sense you're right but recitativo in opera is a lot less melodic, more like ordinary speech, and is virtually extemporised by the singer. I thought recitativo was also important for moving the plot along but perhaps that's implicit in what you said anyway. The actual notes or melodies of Gershwins' and others' intros were, I think, actually written out for the singers by the composers.

    @Carlos Augusto Costa de Aguiar
You hear them very frequently on Ella's recordings, but many other singers, and bands, omit them.

  13. T.... L....

"Oh how I feel that I could melt..." Yes indeed. Ella at her most alluring and - dare I say - sexiest.

    T.... L....

Thomas Leary Thanks for daring to say it. I agree.

    T.... L....

Ella was a MUCH sexier singer than she's given credit for.

  14. C.... H....

    The one and only Ella..

  15. J.... M....

The highs, the lows and everything in between....Ella hits them all with absolute perfection.  Just beautifully done.

  20. r.... ....

what absolute beauty- ella was special
