Electric Light Orchestra - Nightrider Lyrics
I remember somewhere in the rain,
The faces of the passers-by,
Staring faces broken blinds,
I recall the situation clearly standing in a crowded car,
I can feel the need in me.
[CHORUS:]
Hold on, nightrider baby,
Hold on you're a nightrider,
Riding the night, searching for what is gone,
Never reaching the end, so you must travel on.
I still see that vision of delight,
While cruising on the black of night,
But she keeps a step ahead,
Looking out the corner of her world,
[CHORUS: Repeat]
Desolation degradation row,
Don't let the feeling show,
She's a ten a penny dream,
Faces with no name and no address,
Keep staring in on my distress, but she kills me with her smile.
[CHORUS: Repeat]

Electric Light Orchestra Nightrider Comments
Warum hört das denn mitten drinne auf ?
I don't like this - I LOVE IT!
It does not come much better than this.
ELO are the best , but before anyone comments everyone has different taste in music . I love 60s,70s,and 80s music.
Just amazing beautiful song night Rider sure wished it was played more every day everywhere. So people would. Be amazing
Jeff is 27 here
WoW !! Jeff With no Sunglasses, Far Out...
The Crown Jewel of "Face the Music," IMHO.
0:36 Lynne wasn't even attempting to hide that they were made to lip-sync this for the Beeb...
Jeff Lynne joined the Birmingham beat group The Nightriders in 1966, after he recorded one unsuccessful single with them "It's Only the Dog" b/w "Your Friend", The Nightriders changed their name to The Idle Race and they also changed their musical direction to become one of the UK's most respected 1960's Psychedelic Rock bands. Possibly Jeff wrote this song as a nod to his old band The Nightriders.
Love this one. E l o so glad I was on Earth to enjoy there music. What a blessing so beautiful. Makes my day. Thank you E L O
Best music ever always. Can't get any better than that
Not the real thing... just mimicking to the soundtrack :-(
Alain Morin I can’t see where you are getting that ;(
@Kim Warlick the difference is very noticeable, compare this version (in which the record version is played and the band members mimic) with a live version and you'll appreciate that all instruments sound different--please see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjbr9Aio9OA
@Alain Morin uh, I think she was being sarcastic (thus, the wink). Of course, it's obviously not live, like many TV performances.
ya it’s definitely definite it’s beautiful and amazing 😉
Sounds like they took the Beatles place well done old chaps
The magnificent 7.
Lynne calling Kelly Groucutt an employee of ELO is sadly comical. Musical geniuses can be dxckish. I'm glad Kelly G won his court case for monies. Too bad he didn't have time to enjoy them. R.I.P.
He WAS an employee. That's how it was set up. If you do a bit more research, you can find information about how Jeff Lynne felt about the whole thing--AND how Kelly felt about Jeff after it all. You are off base.
+matthew stetson agreed
Dan was right. This is awesome.
❤❤❤😚😎⚘
Jeff wth no glasses on,RARE! With the best String combination of Kaminski McDowell and Gayle. #Players
Such a shame that come 79 Kaminski McDowell and Gale would be told (by letter I understand) that they were fired. The music business is a tough place.
i wouldn't say they are the sons of the beatles. they have a sound of their own. they are much better than the beatles, in my opinion. god bless jeff lynne.
I totally agree with you Liz,the Beatles where good,in their on way,but ELO always gonna be a better orchestra
Yes The Beatles were first but not necessarily The Best. ELO is in a different Universe~!!!
Everything with this song just sends shivers up and down the spine. The cellos, Jeff's unbeatable vocals, Kelly's background and lead vocals, the opening bass line....it's one of elos most timeless songs and that comes from a guy that have been a crazy ELO fan since I was around 5.
R.I.P Michael "kelly" groucutt
Did he die of cancer? Mik Kaminski is dead now too. And Mike Edwards makes three now.
@Kathy Loveless Mik Kaminski is still alive I think. Hugh McDowell died last year though.
@Bryan Coates Oh o.k. That is who I must have been thinking of. Sorry.
I picture this song as the soundtrack to the "Batgirl" movie as she rides her motorcycle across the Brooklyn bridge in the dead of night.
This came from _Face the Music,_ the first ELO album with the lineup of string musicians that would survive through 1978.
This ranks up with The Beatles best music in my opinion, i always considered this the more Prog side of ELO. Brilliant!
Agreed, but Genesis had just put out the Lamb.

I gave this sequence serious thought. Is this completely random or is there meaning behind it?
ELO FOREVER........
I love this tune ! especially both vocals and Kelly's bass it's a shame he didn't stay with the band
is this from top of the pops? I didn't know Nightrider was a single
yes it is
It wasn't a hit though.
Such an underrated song!
They are never as serious when they are pretending to sing the songs. Which nearly all bands were made to do back in the 70's and 80's.
If I could only listen to one band for the rest of my life, ELO would definitely be it!!
Oh yes Kayla , great group ( band) , Of the old school I prefer group lol.
Jeff Lynne, or Donald Fagen. Definitely one of the two.
Same, I have a whole playlist of elo and every so often I put that on and just listen to that for a few days.
2:53 . Nice thumbs up from Richard :-)
Jeff Lynne without sunglasses......WOW!
I had always wondered what he looked like without the sunglasses, and now I know thanks to Youtube! It is so fun to see all of these old recordings.
MFSB 😂
"Whare have all my glasses gone, long time passing..........."
H
In the can't get it out of my head clip (filmed in a barn) the camera gets close enough where you can see his blue eyes
"This is from a 1997 interview on Australian radio where the question of Jeff
always wearing sunglasses was asked and here is Jeff's response:
"It wasn't really that, y'know, deeply thought about. I just put 'em on
one day because, y'know, I just hate all this traveling and stuff like that.
Y'know, on tour, I really didn't enjoy being on tour. And once
I put 'em on and realized, 'Wow, I got me own little world going.'
Y'know, it's sort of, um... I don't know, like a defense thing. I put
'em on and then I couldn't take 'em off."
I like at 00:38 Jeff looks like he's thinking, 'yep, I'm lip synching!
Have always loved this song....Jeff and Kelly's dual leads and harmonies on various songs, including this one, are just great to listen to, they blended very nicely. RIP Kelly.
GREAT SONG...Too bad they are lip syncing
From 1984ish to present, I have had this album ABOUT 7 different times. From records, to cassettes to CD's.
I still consider Fire on High one of the greatest all time albums
the album is called Face The Music numbnuts, Fire On High is the opening track!
@Sean Vervliet great correction. You're so smart
Jeff, Kelly, Bev, Richard... so much talent in this group.
Violinist Mik Kaminski should not be forgotten, either. He first joined ELO in mid-1973 replacing Wilf Gibson (1945-2014), and would occasionally appear here and there on 1981's _Time_ and 1983's _Secret Messages,_ as well as performing on the tour for 1986's _Balance of Power._
And Melvyn Gale and Hugh McDowell
one of ELO's most underrated songs, a classic!
sweetieagogo Love listening to One Summer Dream as I’m falling asleep 😴
Strange magic too, i freaking love that song
@sweetieagogo I happen to love all of ELO's Songs. They never really made a bad record. Power Of Balance wasn't one of their greatest though. But that was right in the end. Of The Lynne and Bev Bevan Incident.
Fire On Freaking High. Phenomenal.
One of their best inmy opinion
Wonderfull, memories of my youth! million times playing this! Love it!
Jeff and Kelly always sounded so good together.
absolutely, but I think on that recording, there were other vocalists singing backup. it sounded like 100 people singing there and only Jeff and Kelly that you can see singing in the video.
Yeah and too bad Lynne treated Kelly like shit and considered him a session player. Jeff Lynee got too big for his britches.
@matthew stetson yeah jeff joining the move was good Move for him idle race going nowhere. Roy wood help him .
Multi dubs
@matthew stetson absolutely, I admire Jeff lynne as a songwriter and performer but not his ethics
So so good. Thanks for the upload.
for me , Night Rider is the best song .
thx for your up .
Somewhere is a quote by one of the Beatles saying that ELO was the type of band they would have become if they had not split. Knowing a bit of the repertory of ELO these two bands would have conquered the span between the 70's and 80's with strings of hits.
Jeff's ELO is truly the son's of the Beatles... as John famously quoted...
"E.L.O." in 1976 (with their colorit Masterpiece-Album "Face The Music") was beside "Fleetwood Mac" w/Stevie Nicks the absolute Peak of Rock-Music - it can't ever get any greater!
(Pat, Switzerland)
Fleetwood Mack w/Stevie Nicks aren't good enough to be roadies or gofers for ELO.
patcharisma 1975 was an incredible year for music. You had ELOs Face the music, Queen's A night at the opera, Pink Floyd's Wish you were here, the ABBA album, Paul Mccartney's Venus and Mars, Justin Hayward and John Lodge's Blue Jays, Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn and many others besides!
It's funny. Both Kelly and Jeff look and sound alike.
They might look alike but Jeff has a better voice.
What a great pair!!
Thank you..
I love Jeff L.
marcela gtz I do and I ain't a puff
I like the 'thumbs up' Richard does
All the girls standing and staring in front on Hugh and Mel, love it!!!
I dunno what i'd do if jeff dies. :'(
KooKoo KooKoo.
I hope Kristen Schall got paid a lot of money for that Doritos Ad. There are sadder things in this world but still that's sad. Aubrey Plaza would never do that. Come to think of it, Aubrey Plaza probably would.
Uncle Phil I'm with you man. I reckon we should build a large spaceship dedicated to Jeff Lynne that looks just like the one in all the ELO album art
Heaven's Gate Yeah!
The thing World did when Fredy Mercury died... Just sing And Cry!
Excelente
It´s Great man! thank you so much!!
Kelly G? Brilliant!
He got eyes
