Electric Light Orchestra - Julie Don't Live Here Lyrics

I wander through the town
A town I knew so well but it seems so strange
The wind blows cold
I remember when I thought your street was paved with gold
I walked along the street
A street I walked along many times before
The things have changed
Everything I ever knew was gone or rearranged

Julie don't live here anymore
She moved away many years before
How can it be, this I can't believe
Julie don't live here anymore

I walked up to your door
Last night I saw your face in the window
But it was different now
The lonely light where we used to be quite gone

I thought about your smile
Your laughing eyes and the things you said to me
I felt so sorry for you
For all the nights we spent hanging around with nothing else to do

Julie don't live here anymore
She moved away many years before
How can it be, this I can't believe
Julie don't live here anymore

Julie don't live here anymore
She moved away many years before
How can it be, this I can't believe
Julie don't live here anymore

Julie don't live here anymore
Julie don't live here anymore
Julie don't live here anymore

"From out of nowhere" is being relased today. In those days I could go out to Harmony House to buy it. but it's 2019. I pre-ordered it from Amazon and will probably get it tomorrow or Monday. I also payed $30.00 for it. I'm sure it's worth it.

    m.... ....

    it’s worth it mate....it’s worth it🙌🏼

Julie Don't Live Here is widely considered by ELO fans to be the BEST unknown ELO song. It's a shame more people haven't had a chance to hear it. I have it on a Dutch single.

  13. S.... H....

Found this in my fathers 7" collection and cant believe it was just a b side????? not available on spotify or google or Amazon! so sad its not a hit for such a fantastic man! and his band

  14. L.... J....

The song is amazing and the lyrics make sense with the story.

However, I can see why it wasn't included in the end. If he has a way to find Julie instead of trying to send messages and dreams to the past then it changes the whole story. SHe's older and different but it *is* her and he could see her at any time to tell her at least what happened to him and why he disappeared back then.

The only way it works, to me, is to be the closing song for the album. Then it takes a different tone and ultimately makes the album the tragic story that it always seemed to be to me. He does manage to go back to the age he's used to, but undershoots by a year or so and ends up in 82-83 instead of 1982. Julie has moved on, both in her heart and her house. After thinking of only her and wanting to go back, when he ultimately does he'll still never see *his* Julie again.

  15. C.... D....

It needs to be on Spotify

  16. S.... M....

Either Jeff Lynn is a time traveler or he really ismerlin

  17. J.... F....

jeff i will love you till my dying day thank you for you.

  18. W.... ....

Too bad it isn't on Spotify.

    W.... ....

It is on Tidal in cd quality

  19. M.... B....

I wonder if it's all suggestion but it happens to me every discarded ELO song I listen to I don't like 10 % as much as the ones which appear in the albums.

  20. K.... p....

Brilliant went to see him at Wembley stadium

  21. T.... ....

Good song, it kinda treads the same ground as "The Way Life's Meant To Be" but is a little less hokey, I think they should have included this one instead.

  22. G.... C....

Elo my favorite and i had a girlfriend her name is julie i comeback for her and she moved julie dont live here anymore exatly like this song

  23. G.... ....

They should have put all of these songs on the album. They are amazing.

  24. A.... E....

We’ve just had the rerelease of ‘Secret Messages’ as a double album. With the 3 ‘b’ sides and or unreleased gems, we could’ve almost had a ‘Time’ double album. ‘Julie Don’t Live Here’, ‘When Time Stood Still’ and ‘The Bouncer’ are the 3 tracks I’m aware of from the ‘Time’ session. All are gems and are probably some of the better tracks. I think it’s time ‘Time’ expanded if you see what I mean.

  25. h.... n....

One of the greatest mistakes was not releasing this as a single. I think it could have been Number One in the UK and US. It's better than Hold On Tight.

  26. D.... S....

    Juiie do ya love me.

  27. v.... ....

Great song! This really should have been released as a single. Great voice of Jeff, great piano, and great percussion!!

  28. D.... ....

You can hear the influence The Beach Boys has on Jeff Lynne.

  29. M.... B....

Damn i think this is gonna have to be my new favourite song

  30. W.... B....

A truly fantastic song that should have been a big hit. When I listen to this song, I can hear similarities between 80's ELO and 80's Moody Blues music. All good stuff.

  31. V.... P....

Huge mistake not including this on album. It's the only song that demonstrates what the protagonist has personally lost...Julie.

    V.... P....

I know. What a tragic ending

    V.... P....

It's because it's essentially lyrically the same thing "The Way Life's Meant to Be" is conveying, so it was too redundant. Both songs are insanely good.

  32. T.... M....

Great B side.. . Would have fitted nicely on the album Time.

  33. I.... V....

Typical Jeff Lynne, so good I get goosebumps. It is hard to understand how one man can have so much talent, maybe that's why there isn't any around these days. Jeff got the LOT when he was born so there was none left ;-)

  34. M.... t....

ELO goes ABBA. I love it!

  35. S.... ....

Probably the best b-side ever, by a long way! Just fantastic! Such a shame Jeff chose Another Heart Breaks on the album instead of this. Huge mistake. Should even have been released as a single (on the a-side then of course)! Whenever I listen to this I get in a good mood, great tune!!

    S.... ....

Damn I had no idea another heart breaks replaced this one thats a shame another heart is my least favourite on the album

  36. e.... ....

I bought the 'Time' album on vinyl the day it was released in August of 1981. I played it non-stop for nearly 2 months. At the time I wasn't buying 45rpm singles, so I never knew about 'Julie Don't Live Here Anymore' being a 'B' side single until the 'Afterglow' CD box set came out in the early 90's. The first time I heard 'Julie' when I bought the 'Afterglow' box set I was blown away. It was one of the best ELO songs I had NEVER heard lol. I did kick myself in the ass however as I could have been enjoying 'Julie Don't Live Here' back in 1981, and the nearly 10 years until I found it with 'Afterglow'.

    e.... ....

    Good story, man.

    e.... ....

And to imagine I only discovered it 20 years after you first bought it. :) And almost 20 years on, I still listen to it constantly.

  37. T.... B....

    Superb love it

  38. J.... H....

Jeff music great when are touring again we love him so much icon every song brilliant

  39. m.... ....

OK, I think I've figured it out. Even though "Yours Truly" isn't as bad as I thought it was, it's not as good as this song. So they should have put this song on it instead.

  40. A.... P....

    underrated

  41. D.... B....

Another classic by the brilliant Jeff Lyne

  42. D.... ....

I have to come to Youtube to hear this song because it is not on Spotify

  43. R.... L....

    eureka!

  44. S.... H....

Even as "Latitude 88 North" it wasnt a hit, because not on the Albums Time or Out of the blue.
    A great pity.

  45. N.... L....

Congratulations Mr.Lynne Bev Richard Kelly ...all of Original ELO !

  46. M.... ....

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, thank you for finally recognizing the musical genius of Jeff Lynne!

    M.... ....

Michael Norman A great ' Showdown"!

  47. T.... T....

it wasnt on the original album....if it was it wouldve been a hit iam sure

    T.... T....

Confirming it wasn't on the original album. I have the 12" vinyl record and it is not on it. However this album is available on iTunes and it is on that album.

  48. S.... M....

musical genius! seen them in dublin last week. Brilliant!

    S.... M....

Stephen Mcilvenna I was there too! Brilliant gig, one of the best of my life for me!

    S.... M....

I saw the concert from this tour.It was in Detroit. 3 years before, they had played before a crowd of 40,000 at the Siverdome. It had come out that half of the show they were lip-synching. So at this tour, the arena was less than half full. a lot of people held a grudge and missed a great concert. As far as them coming here for this tour, it seems unlikely now.

    S.... M....

Me too! Going to the Belfast show this year

  49. M.... ....

    Wery good.....

  50. E.... P....

    Ah no words pure bliss!

  51. 1.... ....

Alexis don't live here anymore. epilepsy was hard on her. I love you my purple flower of peace

    1.... ....

Im sorry to hear that.Shes a purple angel now. From another epilepsy warrior

  52. 1.... ....

Alexis don't live here anymore. epilepsy was hard on her. I love you my purple flower of peace

    1.... ....

I'm so sorry to hear that. I have it and I know if medication doesn't control it, it is hard. I am blessed. As long as I take my pills I don't have seizues.  but I have lost a few cars, lost my license a few times. Plus, the medication does have side  effects.

  53. D.... P....

Is it just me, or are there parts of this song that sound very similar to 'Then I Kissed Her' by the Beach Boys?
That could be why it relegated to a b-side, which is shame because it's a great song.

    D.... P....

+David Prichard My thoughts too, though I was thinking the Crystals' version. But I think there is enough difference.

    D.... P....

David Prichard I'm familiar with that Beach Boys song. The synth in this song and the opening guitar in that other song are almost playing the same thing. The tempo is the same as well. As far as lyrics go though I can't hear any similarities.

    D.... P....

I neve thought about that until right now. Yes it does.

    D.... P....

Good ear, the thought had crossed my mind that it might be a copyright thing that kept this from the album in place of "The Way Life's Meant To Be."

    D.... P....

To be fair though, Jeff recycled the Heroes and Villains vocal melody a couple of times, so I don't know if it would have stopped him putting it on the LP (although, The Way Life's Meant To Be is on the same LP, so maybe he didn't want two Beach Boys similarities..) Pity as this is a fantastic record.

  54. R.... G....

This song was on Afterglow and was not on the Time Album

    R.... G....

+Randy Greb It ws written for Time but not used. We have a special edition CD of Time featuring this and two other unused songs :)

    R.... G....

    +Randy Greb
    singel B seite

    R.... G....

the digital remasted version cd of time it is as a bonus track

  55. h.... ....

Best B-side of all time !!!

    h.... ....

They had a lot of great B sides, "Buildings Have Eyes", "Caught In A Trap"...... so you had to buy the single if you already had the album (very clever :-))

  56. M.... ....

This should have been one of ELO's hits.

    M.... ....

yes...it wasnt on original album release tho...i had it...found the remake later

  57. C.... A....

+A song that shouldn't have been forgotten for so long.

    C.... A....

+Chris Abbey it was on the time albums b sides ..lots of the early u2 b side songs are also unheard of but are just great

    C.... A....

+lake fire B side of Twilight.

  58. m.... ....

My favorite ELO album and this is the first time I've heard of it.

    m.... ....

marty3888 I actually saw them sing this live!

    m.... ....

Can't believe he didnt play any songs from this album a couple days ago at awesome Sunrise concert.....why?

  59. a.... ....

Love this song and the album.

    a.... ....

In my family it's pretty much a crime not to like ELO.

    a.... ....

@Harizonia Your family has great taste in music!

  60. A.... L....

I think this fits in with the story of "Time." Same with all the other bonus tracks in the CD re-release. This one works well as the last track, because in the end, the speaker realises that he will never again be with the one he loves. IMO, the whole album is an analogy of the development of people and how they change through time.

    A.... L....

@alexander Lowry I think I need to take another visit to one of my favorite albums with this in mind. Thank you for this amazing insight!

    A.... L....

I think Jeff should have put Julie Don’t Live Here instead of Hold on Tight on the album. It’s a much stronger song and just as fitting. I guess he had to make cuts due to LP length.

    A.... L....

@Ryan Powers I agree with you.

  61. J.... R....

    Love it

  62. L.... R....

love this song & a great album to

  63. r.... ....

    fantastic.

  64. F.... P....

This song poses the same situation as "The Way Life's Meant To Be", when he came back and find that everything has changed; I think this could be the reason to take it out.

    F.... P....

That was my first thought as well, though I think "The Way Life's Meant To Be" is sort of hokey and they were probably hoping for a hit single, whereas this might have been the more artistic choice for the album as a whole.

  65. w.... s....

I played it TO DEATH on my tape recorder. Literally. The tape broke.

    w.... s....

Good thing you can't break YouTube, you can listen to it on repeat (like I do!) Freakin' amazing song.

    w.... s....

**Youtube snaps in 2** Don't worry, just patch it up with some scotch tape.

    w.... s....

    Flex seal can fix that

  66. J.... V....

This is a great Lynne arrangement, tempo and timpani, bells and bright harmonies.
But I like "The Lights go Down." Throw out "Hold on Tight," a repetitive mediocrity which has little to do with the "Time" theme.

    J.... V....

I always find Hold on Tight brings the mood back to earth and settles everything down nicely after the whole album. It's a simple song with a simple message and is a perfect bookend for such a big record.

    J.... V....

Hold on Tight is as awesome rock n roll paino boogie (and was a hit in ‘81?), it ends the album on a high.

  67. F.... S....

It's a great song. Maybe Jeff felt it was to similar to other songs on the album

    F.... S....

    +Freddy Simensen A B-side! That's how damn great Jeff Lynne's music is!

  68. K.... D....

Time was an epic album. But I still don't get how this song didn't make the cut (although I'm not sure which song I would have sacrificed to make space for it, either). That summer, I think this B-side was the most played tune on radio stations around Europe. -Right up there with Hold On Tight. It remains one of my all-time ELO favorites and I'm curious to hear Jeff's explanation to how he chose to demote it to a non-album B-side.

    K.... D....

I would have sacrificed "twentieth century man.

    K.... D....

I would have sacrificed "Another Heart Breaks". I have swapped the two songs out on my downloaded copy of the Time album and it does fit in and flow nicely with the rest of the album theme.

  69. J.... S....

The best song of the whole lot and Jeff didn't put it on the album...still shaking my head after 30 years....

  70. D.... S....

I got a comment. Who dropped the ball on promoting this as a single for the radio?

  71. J.... V....

No comments for one of the greatest songs ever????

    J.... V....

My favorite ELO song is on this album, "Is this he way life's meant to be."
