Elbow - Fly Boy Blue / Lunette Lyrics

It's a lethal ballet
Air traffic congestion
I'm having a baby
Second thoughts
Scotch
Dinner and
Someone’s dancing on the box
A former MP and no one’s watching
My oldest friends are a serious habit
Fly boy blue
So bring your faces
Home to my sweet trampoline
And acres of crash site love

Presidential delays
Suppose I’m just lucky
l'm having a shindig
Me, Red Bob and The Ivory Host
And someone’s shouting on the box
A chinless prefect gone Godzilla
My newest friends have forgotten my name
But so have I so far so good and home
You and me trampoline
And oceans of crash site love

What can be said of the cigarettes smoked
A prop for a joke or a mark on the clock
If I stopped would the bus ever come
Would the dawn ever kiss me forgivingly knowing what’s done
Would the drivel make scribble, make sense and then song
Would the woodbines denied black another man’s lungs
Perverse as it may sound I sometimes believe
The tip to my lips just reminds me to breathe

What can be said of the whiskey and wine
Random abandon or ballast for joy
That was scuppered with trust
Little more than a boy
And besides I’m in excellent company
I’m reaching the age when decisions are made on the life and the liver
And I'm sure, last ditch that I'll ask for more time
But Mother forgive me
I still want a bottle of good Irish whiskey
And a bundle of smokes in my grave

But there isn’t words yet for the comfort I get
From the gentle lunette at the top of the nape of the neck that I wake to
And where are the words for the leap in my chest
When mischief appears either side of the scar on your nose
Made by a rose thorn
So you claim
By a rose thorn

  26. O.... O....

I've just been watching Trainspotting again for the gazillionth time and Elastica's 2:1 was playing in the background of a scene and it so pinged my head that I heard it somewhere else. have a listen and compare

  28. D.... H....

This song... Is just amazing and means a lot to me

    D.... H....

Dominic Hook the second part (which seems like another song on its own) just grabs my soul...drags me deep down but also lifts me high...can't work it out really.

    D.... H....

Fred Ralph 100% the same feeling as me, what a song!

  29. J.... R....

The latter song in this pair is lovely, but the former especially, especially really gets me. Just such a groove! That horn chorus sounding so beefy at the same time as so frail, and taking just as much time as it needs to finish. Love it.

I'd stopped after the album before for a while not hearing anything, and just got around to checking out this one and the EP after it recently. Very awesome. :)

  34. R.... R....

Lunette has some of the most beautifully delicate & powerful lyrics I think I have ever heard in my life. I fall in love with this band more & more.

"I'm reaching the age when decisions are made
On the life, and the liver, and I'm sure last ditch
That I'll ask for more time, Mother forgive me,
I still want a bottle of good Irish whisky
And a bundle of smokes in my grave."

  35. t.... ....

I just cannnnt get over this song! I listened to it million times dammit! Whats happening haha

  36. m.... p....

Nina this guy is so talented. I love the haunting lyrics or should I say music. I would definitely purchase his work. Who writes the lyrics, and you and laura should have done background harmony.

  37. h.... j....

The first time I heard Lunette I started crying. Enough said how much I love Elbow ;)

  38. r.... ....

Fly Boy Blue really, really reminds me of another one - maybe something about the singing? A Pink Floyd song, maybe? It's been on the tip of my tongue for days now! Can anyone help me?

    r.... ....

+redteamla I think it reminds you of in the court of the crimson king by King Crimson. The drumming and guitar in the chorus is very reminiscent.

    r.... ....

+redteamla One of these Days by Pink Floyd from the album Meddle!

    r.... ....

+redteamla or maybe "fearless"...definitely off meddle there's a song with a bass line that is similar to the baritone sax bit.

    r.... ....

    +redteamla "echoes", final answer

  39. D.... ....

Can anybody tell me how Pete gets this distinctive sound from his Bass Guitar?
    Thanks YouTube.

  40. X.... L....

This fucking song is impressive, amazing, awesome and fantastic.

  41. V.... f....

This song is still so criminally under viewed and seemingly undervalued. Tsk.

  44. r.... m....

beautiful piece of music the lyrics give me a lump in the throat every time i hear it makes me think of the things ive messed up and lost

  45. b.... ....

This is the album that should raved by critics instead of another one that shall remain nameless and long and hazy...

  46. J.... S....

    absolutely gorgeous

  47. j.... ....

This is just pure musical brilliance after 3:10. This was album of the year and Elbow are a supergroup. How does Guy Harvey come up with these lyrics?

"....Would the drivel make scribble make sense and then song..."

cracking album apart from track 6

  65. p.... ....

Why didn't they play this on Jools? Did they fear being mistaken for Radiohead?

  66. D.... ....

Guy looks like the loneliest man in the world standing by that brick wall and singing those words.....I want to give him a big cuddle and make it all better.

Instead I'll just give thanks for his heart stopping lyrics, haunting melodies and the way the rest of the Elbow boys just. fit. together.

TTOALOE is just the best album ever, since the last one.....

  67. c.... ....

i didn't really like the first song
    until the brass came in.

  68. a.... ....

I've been into Elbow for many years and while jumping from one sound to another Elbow are my staple, you could say they are my porridge to an otherwise varied diet! Quite often a new Elbow album on first listen doesn't quite live up to the last album .... 3 listens in it becomes their best yet! I saw them recently at the Liverpool Echo arena ..... Blown away. True musicians and it shows in their layered music. Garveys lyrics are a wonder to behold.

    a.... ....

Seriously, their new album Giants of all Sizes is so fucking good but I found it so BLAH at first...the good news I think that bodes well for an album that can be listened to and taken seriously for a long LONG time.

  69. M.... W....

The words to Lunette and just lovely. No other words to describe it

  78. G.... ....

    love pete's bass on this!

    G.... ....

Yeah his bass is always so subtle but it's always there.

  79. C.... U....

    Best thing they've ever done

  80. F.... T....

Great tune! Love those unison instrumental bridges with the bari sax

  81. P.... ....

Beautiful! I only think that the open end needs the same 3:12 - 4:07 part again and after that it can fade away.

  82. P.... A....

Most excellent Band. Been following them for years. This song is bloody fantastic.

  83. L.... D....

the rich sound, the full flavor, the exquisite tenderness, the love, the beautiful intonation, this is music that fills a soul, creates a memory, recalls all feeling and sends it soaring to a new life, rich with feeling

    L.... D....

this is what's good about youtube! wellll said and I agree

  84. S.... R....

This is art with out exception, Its like hearing painting.  The whole album is brilliant.  I agree with Apple Green, that last lyrics is emotion killer.

  85. M.... R....

Well the album is just as good as I thought it would be xxxx ahhh welcome back elbow xxx

  86. j.... ....

Just heard the album, I don't like it at all

  87. J.... E....

Sounds alot like King Crimson/ early Genesis stuff

  88. i.... ....

I´m so happy - i didn´t know that there is coming a new album - shame on me as a huge Elbow-fan :D - so nice.

  89. D.... M....

The thing I like about Elbow is that every tune takes me on a journey...

  90. C.... ....

    that baritone sax! lovely!

  91. C.... s....

Absolutely brill. I'm guessing they like Summer 68 by Pink Floyd (indeed all of Atom Heart Mother)! Love Elbow so much, best live band around!!

    C.... s....

thankyou for introducing me to the floyd song!

    C.... s....

YES! So similar - what a beautiful PF song

  93. j.... c....

Another well anticipated album and a taste of what lyrical magic is yet to unfold. Loved the lunette part of this song and have no doubt the rest of the cd will be just as good. I cant wait to see this band live and am saving to make the journey early 2015 from Australia to see them wherever they may be playing at the time. : ))

  94. j.... ....

The Fly Boy Blue part easily beats the Lunette part, the vocals are SO slick, as is the chord progression, strumming, that damn solo and the superb brass. Love the lyrics too, really personal, raw and awesome. The Lunette part is great, a nice mellow section, but really changes the song from what it could have been had it stuck with the Fly Boy Blue part. But I'm sure it'll fit in great on the album, if what surrounds it is a success!!

  95. A.... D....

Would love to know what mic Guy uses. His voice is most amazing.

  96. j.... .....

After several listens I reckon this is the best thing they've recorded...those lyrics at the end of Lunette are just beautiful

  97. A.... D....

    Outrageously awesome!!!!

  98. i.... ....

"Where are the words for the leap in my chest when mischief appears either side of your scar on your nose/Made by a rose thorn, so you claim/By a rose thorn…"

    i.... ....

Isn't that an amazing set of lyrics.? Gorgeous!

  99. E.... S....

I need Guy Garvey's jacket! Someone please!

    E.... S....

Try Fjallraven - a Swedish company

  100. A.... /....

This song (or to be specific, the ending part) melts my heart, because I can totally sympathise with the feelings Guy must have.

When you're so deeply in love with a person, there will always be things in your life that make you grief about every single misstep you took, which lead to the inevitable end of something so beautiful.

Especially the thought of your loved one living with another man, or making a wonderful little family without you, is especially heart breaking.
It's that awkward thing, where you definitely want her to be happy, but you'll probably never get over the feeling, that you just can't handle it.

    Beautiful song, Elbow.
Gonna get that album as soon as I can!

    A.... /....

A-god damn-men. I can't put into words deep and strong that hits.
