Easton, Sheena - Wind Beneath My Wings Lyrics

It must have been cold there, in my shadow
To never have sunlight on your face
You've been content to let me shine, you always walked a step behind

I was the one with all the glory, while you were the one with all the strength
Only a face without a name, and I never once heard you complain

Did you ever know that you're my hero, and everything I'd like to be
I could fly higher than an eagle, 'cause you are the wind beneath my wings

It might have appeared to go unnoticed, but I've got it all here in my heart
I want you to know I know the truth, I would be nothing without you

Did you ever know that you're my hero, and everything I'd like to be
I could fly higher than an eagle, 'cause you are the wind beneath my wings
You are the wind beneath my wings

Easton, Sheena Wind Beneath My Wings Comments
  1. S.... C....

Best version ever (1981) Bette Midler makes me cringe especially the out of key ending. gives me goosebumps

  2. C.... R....

End part of this song, Bette’s was a better version

    C.... R....

i hate the ending on midlers that horrible out of key bit. makes me cringe

  3. k.... h....

    Sssso beautiful !!!!!!!!

  4. M.... N....

A beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.

  5. M.... T....

One of my favorite songs... I cry everytime I hear this...I miss my dad so much, and this reminds me of his amazing strength, compassion, love, and his light as pure as an angel always there to help people.

    M.... T....

I agree with you totaly , i miss my mother and father ... everytime i here this song im thinging about them

  6. S.... P....

so much better than u know who

    S.... P....

right , because Sheena can sing ... one of the best ever

  7. R.... G....

    The best version by FAR....

  8. E.... G....

This version is good, but Bette Midler is another level, Bette not only has the right voice for this song, Bette prints a feeling that nobody can do in this song. When you listen to Bette Midler sing this song you cry of emotion and that's why Bette got more recognition in this topic. So this song is definitely from the great Bette Middler.

  9. m.... n....

Man who wrote " we like Bread and Butter" wrote this song on a paper bag while fishing.

  10. P.... T....

Sheena should have brought this out a single. Better Miller didn't have the voice for it and spoilt it

    P.... T....

    Agreed completely

  11. M.... ....

The best version! Лучшее исполнение этой песни.

  12. J.... M....

excellent version! sweet voice. cute Scottish accent she has. (so nice 1981 before Rap Music took over America for the worse)

  13. B.... L....

who is gonna try to beat her

    B.... L....

    None can so far.

    B.... L....

@hkman That Tressa Thomas girl from the movie the 5 heart beats. She is the best I've ever heard sing this song.

  14. J.... B....

    Two voters don't have a clue.  :D

    J.... B....

    John Bond shut up idiot

  15. J.... B....

Not her best performance.  But,  close.  IMHO,  her best was the studio version (Madness, Money and Music).

  16. J.... B....

    @ John Francis
Lee Greenwood DID NOT write this song.
It was co-written by Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar.
And FWIW, Lee Greenwood can't sing worth a damn, IMHO.

  17. p.... ....

This lady can sing! I never knew Sheena Easton sung a version of this song. She blows Bette Midler out of the water!!!

    p.... ....

@Frank C Wow! I was going to say 1982 because I remember having this discussion with a friend, who said that the song belonged to Bette Middler, and I showed her the cassete then, but when I was wrtiing now I didn't know if it was 1982 or 1972. So I didn't want to give an exact date! Thanks for confirming what I thought first.

    p.... ....

lauruguayitausa   Sure for 1982 :  Sheena started career by 1981.

    p.... ....

She is good, but Bette Midler is very superior.

    p.... ....

"She blows Bette Midler out of the water!!!"

    Damn right!

    p.... ....

    sends shivers down my body

  18. h.... ....

Both Roger and Sheena recorded their respective versions in 1982. But I was not aware of Roger's version until years after because I never knew him back then. He recorded his version a few months before Sheena. Like I said, I heard Sheena's version FIRST, and I have heard many versions after Sheena. Hers will ALWAYS be my favorite. Yes, Roger has the honor of being the first to RECORD the song.

    h.... ....

hoopsgyrl I believe Lee Greenwood was the first to record this song in the US in 1983. You are spot on with Roger Whittaker being the first and Sheena being the 2nd. There was another guy called Gary Morris, a country singer, who also recorded the song in 1983 - the same year as Lee Greenwood.

    h.... ....

joesophie90   But they said Sheena did in 1982.

    h.... ....

Colleen Hewitt from Australia was the second person to record this song in 82 before Easton. And in my opinion is the definitive cover. Also officialy the first charting hit

  19. J.... B....

    OMG, YES!!!

Why Bette Midler gets so much recognition for covering this Larry Henley song, I will never be able to comprehend.

THIS WOMAN NAILS IT! HANDS DOWN!

    J.... B....

shes a terrible singer, all of her covers are second rate.

  20. J.... B....

This song is featured on her album, Madness, Money and Music. It is excellent. It is sublime.

  21. J.... B....

I have listened to over 20 other covers. Christine Wyrtzen comes in second, only to Sheena. :)

  22. C.... ....

Not the first version (that honor goes to Roger Whittaker) but certainly one of the best.

  23. J.... L....

She's the Best...The Most Beautiful & Saddest Song...!

  24. h.... ....

Happy birthday, Sheena! This song is one of my favorites since 1982. This will ALWAYS be a Sheena Easton song to me. I heard your version FIRST before everyone else did their cover.

  25. t.... ....

    Outstanding! Her version is too!

  26. G.... S....

Esta buena , pero prefiero a mi bette midler...el la mejor.

  27. 1.... ....

    I agree wholly with you.

  28. L.... B....

This is the absolute VERY best version of this song. Only Sheena Easton could make it perfect.

    L.... B....

    spot on Sir

  29. D.... A....

To me personally, this is the best version of 'The Wind Beneath My Wings' ever. Sheena Easton had one of the best voices. I also love how much feeling she puts into it. Great song to hear.

  30. T.... ....

Can I please go back to 1982 and marry Sheena Easton?

  31. h.... ....

Sheena's version was NEVER released as a single. But she sang it live in different talk shows and concerts back in 1982-1983 before Gary released his version as a single. Gary's hit was in the COUNTRY charts not POP charts. Sheena was never a country singer.

  32. h.... ....

Gary does a nice job, but in my opinion Gary Morris can't hold a candle to Sheena Easton. By the way, Gary was not the first. Roger Whittaker was first, then Sheena was the second to record the song. Both Sheena and Roger recorded their versions in 1982 while Gary in 1983. So Gary was NOT the original.

    h.... ....

hoopsgyrl We mustn't forget Bette Midler. She sang it for her heartbreaking movie 'Beaches' back in the 80's.......

  33. M.... G....

I did listen to his rendition - great voice, wonderful control (vibrato, power). And he seemed very relaxed and at ease singing. Again, thanks for the advice.

  34. M.... G....

I need to listen to him. Found some amazing voices by advice (Eva Cassidy - one of the most amazing voices I ever heard 'Over the Rainbow / Fields of Gold). Sorry to trail off subject, she never sang this beautiful tune. It's funny that many people sing this song well and one person (Bette M) gets noticed for it. Even she said it was surprising. Thanks for your advice.

    M.... G....

Bette Midler's cover was featured in the very popular film "Beaches". so her release of the song had the momentum and popularity of the movie behind it.

  35. 1.... ....

Try Gary Morris. He made this song a hit.

    1.... ....

Thanks, I had never heard his version.. It is brilliant....

  36. 1.... ....

she does a great job, but she cant hold a candle to the original Gary Morris

  37. M.... G....

Same here - loved this song from the moment Sheena sang it years ago. Had the album Madness, Money & Music and also saw the televised concert you're referring to. It was literally a magical night. Bette Midler's a great talent and I like her a lot, but Sheena blows her away with this. Sad Sheena was never recognized like Bette Midler.. No comparison. Would love to know what each performer thinks of the other's version...

  38. j.... b....

thank you for this video, I have always loved her version!

  39. M.... G....

Sheena was robbed of her amazing voice and rendition of this song. Bette Midler is very good but Sheena BLOWS Bette away. Love both women but Sheena is sheer perfection.

  40. p.... ....

    Great voice!!!

  41. B.... ....

I agree. I actually only discovered Sheena's version a few weeks ago. The first time I heard it I knew that it was a hugely missed opportunity because most people were not familiar with the song back in its infancy (1982). Due to her success up to that point I think that Sheena's take would have gone No. 1 and completely changed her career for the better at that point. What were EMI thinking by not releasing this as a single? Sheena nailed it.

  42. M.... R....

    ♥ ♥ ♥

  43. A.... G....

I heard this beautiful song from Sheena before Bette. I loved Sheena in this song. It is hers!!

  44. j.... f....

love this version and bette midlers song originally written and recorded by lee greenwood gladys knight does a mean version only she calls the song hero

  45. m.... ....

I grew up in the 80s, and had no idea there was a version before Bette's.

  46. h.... ....

When Sheena's album Madness, Money & Music came out the summer of 1982, I bought it right away. The first time I played Wind beneath my wings, it became my first favorite from that album. I wanted so bad for her record label EMI America to release the song as a single (was never released as a single), but they instead released "Machinery" which I did not think was a good choice as the first single. The reason Bette's version made it to No. 1 was because "Beaches" was a good movie.

  47. s.... h....

good lord she has the purest voice. I love bette midler but sheena leaves bm in her wake.

  48. R.... ....

Sheena is one of the best 80's females and one of my favorites...TRUE TALENT....

  49. d.... c....

I'm with the rest of you guys... this version is a million times better than Bette!!!

  50. T.... M....

    Sandys song?

  51. h.... ....

    Viva la Sheena!

  52. M.... M....

Absolutely beautiful. Her voice is flawless

  53. B.... K....

Sheena: classic purity, her unique voice goes straight to the heart.

  54. .... ....

This song is very appealing to my heart..

  55. a.... ....

Definitely the best version of the song. It's the firts version I heard and was blown away. Much more difficult and better than that karaoke-friendly version by Bette Midler.

  56. h.... ....

The first and the best version I have ever heard of this song. It has been a favorite of mine since 1982. Thank you for posting her live version of Wind Beneath My Wings.
