Earle, Steve - Summer Wages Lyrics

Never hit seventeen
When you play against the dealer
You know that the odds
Won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone
With your friends around to steal her
She'll be gamled and gone
Like summer wages

And we'll keep rollin' on
'til we get to Vancouver
And the woman that I love
She's living there
It's been six long months
And more since I've seen her
Years have gambled and gone
Like summer wages

[Chorus:]
In all the beer parlors
All down along Main Street
The dreams of the seasons
Get all spilled down on the floor
All the big stands of timber
Just waiting for falling
And the hookers standing watchfully
Waiting by the door

So I'll work on the towboats
With my slippery city shoes
Which lord I swore I would never do again
Through the gray fog-bound straits
Where the cedars stand watching
I'll be far off and gone
Like summer wages

[Chorus]

Never hit seventeen
When you play against the dealer
You know that the odds
Won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone
With your friends around to steal her
She'll be gamled and gone
Like summer wages

Tag
And the years are gambled and lost
Like summer wages

Earle, Steve Summer Wages Comments
  1. W.... E....

About 800 miles west of Winnipeg , there is a man by the name of Ian Tyson , who lives in Longview , Alberta , who could give Steve a few hints about singing this song .  Tyson wrote Summer Wages , Someday Soon and 4 Strong Winds , along with many other songs .              Tyson himself did an excellent job of singing this song . JD Crowe and the New South did a good job , as did Bobby Bare .

it is just a bad recording .... he sing's way better then that ... yea it is Ian Tyson's song , but it's to CANADIAN for a COUNTRY song ... sounds better with a rock and roll singer sing it ....

  3. J.... R....

    thank you Steve Earle

Steve always does credit other musicians, but he also knows his audience are not casual music fans and is singing this in Winnipeg.    Doesn't need to say what everyone else knows.  And he and Tyson respect each other, despite the negativity from Ian fans with a limited idea of what counts as good singing.  Steve is an expressive singer, not a pretty one. Ian is pretty.  Both are great singers.

  5. W.... B....

As has been stated... Ian Tyson wrote this song and sang it the way it should be sung. This is  one damn lousy version by someone who seems not capable of singing it properly or giving credit properly to the one who wrote it.  Sad....

  6. J.... N....

I've always loved this song and heard many, many great versions of it. This is Not one of them.

  7. G.... C....

Bobby Bare does a nice version of it.....

  8. W.... A....

Wow...totally agree with Gwynn Evans; this is a "crummy or crappy" version of a great song; and as to the comment someone else mention; this guy never once gave any credit to the man who wrote the song, and sang it much better. Just sayin.

  9. G.... E....

Crummy version of one of Ian's greatest songs. I can sing it better than that. Pfui.

  10. M.... P....

    Credit Ian Tyson!

  11. M.... ....

Thanks for posting such a cool song but could I ask why you think Steve gave such a "cool" intro?   He failed to give credit to Ian Tyson, the man who wrote the song.  Probably dissed Ian for political reasons.

    M.... ....

Yes, I agree totally, though as usual he never passes up an opportunity to drop Townes' name!

  12. T.... H....

unlike bieber he does not require 5 million $ oF sound mixing

    Love this song.
