Dylan, Bob - Not Dark Yet Lyrics
Shadows are fallin' and I've been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is runnin' away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
Well, my sense of humanity has gone down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there.
Well, I've been to London and I been to gay Paris
I've followed the river and I got to the sea
I ain't lookin' for nothin' in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there.
I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still
Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there.

Dylan, Bob Not Dark Yet Comments
Bob Dylan was well read and Isuspect that he had read Byron's poem "Darkness" (see also "It's alright ma") which refers to the year 1816, "the year without a summer", following the eruption of mount Tambora in Indonesia, which changed the worldwide climate especially in Europe and North America
Byron: "Darkness":
I had a dream, which was not all a dream.
The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars
Did wander darkling in the eternal space,
Rayless, and pathless, and the icy earth
Swung blind and blackening in the moonless air;
Morn came and went—and came, and brought no day,
And men forgot their passions in the dread
Of this their desolation; and all hearts
Were chill'd into a selfish prayer for light:
"I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from.....".... almost 2020 and been listening to Dylan since the 60's....... and keep coming back to great songs like this, Positively 4th Street and so many more. Happy New Year to all.

I bet Bob Dylan would be proud of so many of the thoughts and comments below. Some beautiful, well-expressed reactions from so many!
It's so scary. But still can't help not listening.
You want scary, wait for "Cold Irons Bound," the next song on the album after this one.
Nádherná píseň
Timeless song, thanks for posting.
Listening after the UK elections and witnessing US senators defending Trump while he insults a teenager wit passion and heart.
"I'm not sure why I should even care; it's not dark yet, but it's getting there."
I was born here and I’ll die here against my will........
Give a Nobel prize to this poet :)
Just when everyone gave up on him and TV interviewers asked him, "So, how was it to be the spokesperson of 60's and seeing the apex of your career?"... when everyone thought Dylan was a 'has been'...

Vw bus behind him. 125k today.
That must mean there some indication of empathy left in the apathetic way of the world.
Now that's deep blues.
Beauty gem song!
This song has so much atmosphere... and everything else to go with it. Kinda like life
"Behind every beautiful thing, there's some kind of pain."
This is just hope for me, I guess one day I will come to this comment and say yes, it is true!
Keep the faith
this song is obviously about death,he is get old,he is afraid of his own mortality,

There are about 8 billion people in the world. And all 8 billion of them at some point of their lives can pick a song from Bob to describe their life and how and what they are feeling and going through.
A friendly enemy to "pop" and a necessary adversary to our place exposed... Thank you for posting and thank you Zimmy for the ink you Sweat
Joy competition
I want to say that this song is about giving birth to my first child, child bearing can be about not remembering why you are here and just want this to end and go home. When actually it is about kicking drugs, maybe even more difficult than childbirth.
God bless Robert Zimmermann.
I think this song was on "Blood on the Tracks" but I can't be sure. That album was very somber, some of it talking about when his marriage fell apart and he must have been feeling down. If you are new to Dylan please listen to all his albums. He is a once in a lifetime expereince who totally changed the reality in which we live. Thank God I was here to see and listen to him his whole life. What a blessing. He makes you think!
Just perfect. ❤️

EVERY SYLLABLE, EVERY SOUND, EVERY NUANCE OF THIS SONG STRAINS A WHISPER OF THE DEEPEST OF SADNESS. ONLY BOB CAN PAINT SUCH A VIVID PICTURE IN YOUR MIND AND SOUL.

i have my freedom but not much time bob i am homeless and ill you must understand me that i am pasing trough i can die silently in my solitude but i am surviver not suicider as my botbands were
Dylan got better with age. This is sublime, and explains more about ourselves than any 'Tambourine Man', 'Times' a changin', or whatever 'blows in the wind' could. This is LIFE here. Period.
I first bought a Dylan LP in 1964. I still have it. As a singer/guitarist I have covered much of his stuff. Recently I just posted my rendition of "Ballad of Hollis Brown" on Youtube. I saw his last solo gig in the UK. I had a bit of a gap in my Dylan following.....work, marriage, etc. This is the FIRST time ever heard this song. I must learn it.
i have my freedom but not much time bob love you sow
Love his whole career, with some reservations, but the stuff from everything from the 90s to now proves, if any doubt remained, he is simply beyond compare.
reminded me Keith Richards How can I stop
Fuck flowers. Fuck look at me clothing. Ass and titties. All that matters.
When Tom passed away I kept his car, cleaned it up and bought polka dot adhesive vinyl to make it look nice inside. Love you, Tom

CHILLS EVERY TIME!!
This song has made me want to shoot dope and chain smoke forever 🤔🤯
i listened to this tune for the first time the day my father passed away , I dont think a song as ever affected me so much , Id been numb all day not speaking, or doing anything just in shock . When i listened to this , it was what was needed to break the brickwall down and start my grieving process , That was a few years ago now, but this gets played a lot . brilliant song
I know it looks like a movie but. I am standing still.
my deepest sympathy for anyone thats not totally moved by such honesty, out here for all to know,a masterpiece
Martin Scorsese says Marval and Super Hero films aren't Cinema? Hope hes fun and happy in life cause his dark nour films of violence and life stories true, great, grand, wise like Bob Dylan fcking great in so many ways and live shows going down. Is Bob Dylan art always the perfect being, the fifth element, pain and indifference, deep sadness but hope. Good, ok, normal, greater good, fun, whole, be, come on youth, u oh darn ne, it's me, it's you, get it together, make it right, right, well, better, balance. Talk is cheap, action jackson pains on the river. Stream the system, app, human being being animals. Omni, 8, help us, o b 1, c 3 p, e I o bingo lol. Rock on.
Dylan can take hardship, struggles and pain and brilliantly compose it in ways we want to but can’t. He’s more than a poet, he’s a gift.
the king,bob the great😍
Pure genius. Thank you for existing Sir.

Just discovered this Dylan gem, definitely the best songwriter of his time.
The melancholy is warm in his voice.
Raphael Aguiar that's a really pleasing way of putting it
Bob has a vision the rest of us mere mortals don't possess.
No one can beat Dylan for insight and just great songs.
This song is a life companion for years and will stay so until the dark will be there.
All blessings Bob Dylan

Bob is not only a great artist......he's A GREAT SOUL.

Grande Bob dillan
Yesssssssssssss ............... Toymiko
after i've heard something like this i'm ready for death. i mean that in the most positive possible way
I am positively NOT ready for death - but it will happen anyway (so it goes) and, by the way, this is an utterly beautiful song (in my (not very) humble opinion)
