@AchelonX I don't think that labels like "soul" or "jazz" are useful to classify these versions. Actually I think that there are more "soul-like" versions of this song even here on youtube, starting from the original Hebb version. On the contrary, I think this Springfield version in the use of brass is rather akin to the Ellington-Sinatra version. The problerm I have with it has nothing to do with arrangement but only with the tempo. Less than two minutes it is just too fast for me.

Different vocal phrasing due to different genres.

Too fast, sounds almost like she wants to get rid of it asap. Maybe I'm used too much to the slow Sinatra-Ellington version.

Dusty is really a Irish girl. I saw a tribute by Martha Reeves (Martha and the Vandellas fame/Motown) where she mentioned Dusty as a great friend who sang with a lot of feeling and soul! I always thought she was British also... glad to hear she's Irish though!!

I remember Merv Griffin singing this song on his show and dedicating it to his daughter named Sunny. Charlize Theron is currently making a movie about the life of Dusty Springfield and I can't wait for America to rediscover Dusty's talent!
