Dusty Springfield - Learn To Say Goodbye Lyrics

When I close my eyes I can see your face
Tho' I try I can't believe that you are gone
There's a part of you that's a part of me
And no matter where I go it comes along
Reminding me of all the good times
And, of course, some of the bad
But then again, some of those hard times
Were the best we ever had

How can I learn to say goodbye
To the only life I ever knew?
Learn to say goodbye to you?
How can I learn to say goodbye?
Tell me - how do you expect me to
Say goodbye to you?

When I needed you, you were always there
You were more than love to me, you were a friend
They say that time is all that matters
And to live it while it lasts
But I can't stop from reminiscing
Or stop living in the past

How can I learn to say goodbye
To the only life I ever knew?
Learn to say goodbye to you?
How can I learn to say goodbye?
Tell me - how do you expect me to
Say goodbye to you?

How can I learn to say goodbye
To the only life I ever knew?
Say goodbye to you?
How can I learn to say goodbye?
Tell me - how do you expect me to
Say goodbye to you?

Dusty Springfield Learn To Say Goodbye Comments

Really wonderful song about very deep feelings. It´s so difficult, shouldn´t we learn to say: "See you!" Love is forever, and even though we are separated by the body, we are united through the heart for all eternity! It doesn´t take away the pain, but it helps get through it. "There´s a part of you ... no matter where I go, it comes along reminding me of all the good times."

Magnificent singer. First time i heard this song was when I watched the tv movie "Say Goodbye Maggie Cole". This movie was also the last film for Susan Haywood. Luv this song.

  5. J.... E....

Love this song and the movie I first heard it on. Say Goodbye Maggie Cole starring Susan Hayward

    this tears me up!

She really was incomparable in so many ways. Surprised this
hidden treasure didn't become the hit it deserved to be. Great lyrics.

CAMEO was a terrific LP. Had about four songs on it that could have been singles. POOR PROMOTION. Well, her time was still well spent recording it. Her fans seek out anything they can find on Dusty, it's like discovering lost treasure.

OK.....but, do you also wish to visit Petula Clark? They are sisters

    T.... N....

I don't even think that the stray cats of London wish to visit Petula as much as they visited Dusty...

Beautiful song, beautifully sung by the Incomparable Dusty. It's off of the album Cameo(notorious for being one of the most ugly album cover designs EVER) . The album  should have sold better, but for some unknown reason, what should have been a "high Spot " in Dusty's career the album "Dusty In Memphis"  heralded an downturn in her career that she never could quite overcome.  The popular English audiences appeared to want Dusty to stay the same swinging 60's girl with the beehive and black eyes singing a limited repertoire of up-tempo numbers and big ballads, while Dusty wanted to move on to greater things.  while America seemed attractive it too did not work out.  What should have been Dusty' finest years got lost in bad scenes and apparent failure.  Such a shame she was Always Our Best!

Yes, Dusty ahead of her time, she didn't know it. "Dusty in Memphis" when released didn't do well in charts (despite Preacher Man hit and all the other incredible songs on it). But now Rolling Stone has it listed in top 50 lps of all time. Better late than never I guess. CAMEO is a terrific LP that was overlooked. You are right, I think once Dusty left England and moved to California, some English fans and Philips record company got offended and felt rejected. Philips kept releasing "Golden Hits" Dusty records which competed with her new LPS. Dusty didn't appreciate that at all. At the age of 30, too early for "Golden Hits" packages anyway. When she went back there in 1979 some of the reporters were so disrespectful to her. Real idiots. But thankfully she did the Albert Hall Concert and felt the fans love there. Her work in the 1970's was wonderful.

Thanks for the thoughtful response.  I remember when the album  "it Begins Again" arrived I was anxious about it's reception and also how dusty would sound. But as soon as the first words on the first track were sung "I know I hurt  you, but I wonder if you know..." I knew all was well, and I think it was truly underestimated and should have been a success.( Also she just looked lovely on the Album cover  photos).   I was living in what was still West Berlin, but I flew in just to see her last night at Drury Lane , and she was a huge success.  I have always thought it sad that after the successes  of those shows that year and The Concert at The Albert Hall that she never did another concert. Everything boded well, but for whatever reasons she seemed unable to capitalize on those successes.  She was Always the best!

    A.... E....

My God Alan, you were so lucky. If there is one person I could have seen live, that would be Dusty. Heard Drury Lane concert was very emotional for her as first concert back from America, she was very pleased and relieved about the audience's response to her. There are a couple of You Tube video interviews done prior to her Drury Lane concert (she is wearing a gray and black looking outfit) that might tell the story as to why she never did another concert in England.
The press treated her really badly during the interviews, down right rude and invasive at times. As far as Albert Hall goes, it was a wonderful concert. However, the Princess treated Dusty badly, snubbing her after the concert due to being offended over something she shouldn't have taken offense to in the first place. Dusty raised a considerable amount of money for a charity for children and that's the thanks she got from the ROYALTY. Plus, her father died I think 3 days prior to her having to give that concert. You can imagine how much she felt like preforming under those circumstances. Yet, she did so and gave a beautiful performance. You're right, It Begins Again was a great LP. Especially liked "Checkmate" and "That's the Kind of Love I Got for you." Email me if you want me to direct you to those interviews on You Tube.

I lost my mother too over 30 years ago when I was in my early 20's - losign a mother is something you never get over , no matter how old you are .

  26. R.... H....

Dusty was an incredibly beautiful woman and best singer of all time.

  27. b.... ....

Passionate & soulful anthem "Learn To Say Goodbye" is one of the finest from Dusty Springfield and would have been a blockbuster hit but radio didn't play it...at this time they only programmed singer/songwriters with bad voices and Dusty didn't fit in to this tired mix so "Cameo" was only appreciated by us fans and wore out several vinyl copies...love the CD, a masterpiece from Dusty and this engrossing ballad is closing song...Bravo Dusty!

  28. P.... G....

There will only ever be one Dusty.......an eternal flame :)

  29. J.... T....

I've always loved Dusty Springfield's delivery of songs...so emotional.
And this is one of them..

  36. K.... ....

My Mother and I watched this movie together..we cried together. Throughout the years..we always remembered the movie..thanks to Dusty Springfield's gut wrenching delivery of Learn To Say Goodbye, We also knew that Susan Hayward was also stricken with cancer.
Little did I know...that I'd be here...listening to this song and missing my best friend..my Mother. It's true..one cannot learn to say goodbye..to anyone they've loved. This song confirms it.
Thank you so much for posting.

One of my favorite ABC MOVIE OF THE WEEK(telecast in September of 1972 I think). Thanks so much for uploading the beautiful opening theme by the great Dusty Springfield.

  39. v.... ....

I kept thinking of this song for such a long time when the movie came out and it came from the last tv movie Susan Hayward made about this dying woman,it touched so many of us because Ms.Hyaward was also dying of cancer, infact it was to be said the movie she made in the desert where the bombing took place and John Wayne and Vancliff all died of cancer due to the radiation they were exposed on the set, rumors ran of this for years about all the cast members on the movies.

  40. p.... ....

Thanks for posting it. Great song from last Susan Hayward's last TV appeareance.

  41. c.... ....

She made an album Reputations which had major input from the Pet Shop Boys and at least 3 hit singles with them here and over in the States.Dusty the best female vocalist ever IMHO!!!

  42. R.... B....

She was so beautiful. I met her in at a dance club in Los Angeles in the 1980's. I think that she did a song with the Pet Shop Boys.
