Dubliners, The - Thirty Foot Trailer Lyrics

The old ways are changing you cannot deny
The day of the traveler's over
There's nowhere to gang and there's nowhere to bide
So farewell to the life of the rover

Goodbye to the tent and the old caravan
To the tinker, the rover, the traveling man
And goodbye tae the thirty foot trailer

Farewell tae the cant and the traveling tongue
Farewell tae the Romany talking
The buying, the selling, the old fortune telling
The knock on the door and the hawking

You got to move fast to keep up with the times
For these days a man cannot dander
There's a bylaw to say you maun be on your way
And another to say ye can't wander

Farewell to the blossom and besoms of broom
Farewell tae the creels and the baskets
The folk of today would far rather pay
For a thing that is made oot o plastic

The old ways are passing and soon will be gone
And progress is aye a big factor
Its sent to afflict us and when they evict us
They tow us away wi a tractor

Farewell tae the pony, the cob, and the mare
The reins and the harness are idle
You don't need a strap when you're breaking up scrap
So farewell tae the bit and the bridle

Farewell tae the fields where we've sweated and toiled
At pulling and hauling and lifting
They'll soon have machines and the traveling queens
And their menfolk had better be shifting

So sad... this song basically predicted what life is like now for the traveling community which is a pity and a real shame because travelers are A HUGE part of Irish history and now society wants to force their cultural way of life out when they have every right to live how they like. But they are vehemetley hated and discriminated against... yet Ireland lets in all sorts of people and even build moscs for other people of different religions and cultures. But wont tolerate their own people.

    M.... R....

Gall Goidel You are real big on here ,but the next time that they set up go and tell them to leave , I bet you don't ,,

    M.... R....

+Dumnezeu să binecuvânteze copiii Thx for a well stated history and current events plaguing Ireland & the West. They, the West, are blind to what they are inviting in. Well, not so much blind as willfully ignorant. Where's our modern Charles Martel when we need him? He did the job needing done in 732 AD.
    It needs doing again . . . !

    M.... R....

Where I am I see roaming Vietnamese harvesting, and fishing as a way of life on the east coast. They are good people. Just good people, and I'm proud to know them.

    M.... R....

I have friends in Hungary who are Roma / Gypsies and they are very good people. They are disadvantaged by history, by discrimination and by the vicious cycle of poverty and lack of education and opportunities. But they are also fiercely proud of their culture but if you treat them with respect and friendliness that is also what you get back. I've been in many of their houses and eaten with them and they were always friendly and generous despite having little to give. But of course for people who treat them badly they will gave back similarly. Same as anybody else basically.

  36. S.... J....

I love it when listeners add information and background. I recently discovered Luke Kelly (and Liam and the others) and am hooked.

  37. V.... ....

I love this song, and I think it tells a tragic truth. But, there is also a good side to these changes. I am Romani, and the reason we are nomadic is because we are subject to racism and persecution. We are not so much travelling, as fleeing. It's nice that we can begin to settle down now. There is still a lot of racism, but, it's getting better. Of course, The Dubliners might've mainly referred to the Irish Travellers, and that's a different story.

    V.... ....

The song was written by Ewan McColl for the radio documentary "The Travelling People" and is about the Romani,

    V.... ....

Romani were at one point a standard, and all cultures have a suitable analogy. To roam in wanderlust is in the human spirit. Its how we colonised continents unknown to cartography, and staked unique claims in unknown wilderness.

Whether we want to set sail and discover a new island, or invent the next innovation...we all want to be part of that undiscovered country, because that is where we call home.

In my culture we were called travelers, yours Romani, and others stalchild or vagabond...

    V.... ....

goes way back to the caste system of India when roma were untouchables

    V.... ....

The mugger it was a whole society that left India and only when we came to Europe that we were all chucked in the same wise people told me that and they were scholars they said that we left because our enemies used terrorism and we knew not how to fight it so they our people left and they could read and write only in Sanskrit and that wasn’t good enough for the Europeans and that is what I was taught

    V.... ....

I'm a romany I have witnessed the abuse and getting moved on constantly

  38. A.... C....

Sadly the simple things in life have gone.

    A.... C....

All have to be registered, plasticised, well dare anyone be individual and different, alas i've fallen foul of this in Europe.!

  41. B.... ....

For all those who were arguing, this song is by Ewan MacColl, a Northern English folk singer, Dirty old town also being one of his.

You will find folk singers from all over the British isles sing folk songs from all over the Isles.

    B.... ....

Bashyboyash although Ewan sings it in a Scottish/ English dialect, I agree great song.

  42. m.... n....

    Fantastic song loves it xxx

  43. W.... R....

Stop whittleing if the song is english , scottish , or iresh , what does it matter its the contents of the song that matters and it applies to all travelers, so sit and listen to it and remember its right

    W.... R....

    It's probably Welsh.

    W.... R....

@jannyrcobs It was written by Ewan Maccoll

    W.... R....

What a shame to be towed away with tractor

    W.... R....

Travelling people are our ancient people with our values God bliss them

  44. W.... R....

I hate paying taxes you hate paying taxes we dont if we can get out of it, you do, dont get at us have a go at those in the city and big business they really can dodge taxes, we may not travel much now but they cant get rid of us,and we aint going to change,

    W.... R....

The old ways never go away. They are a part of who we are as a species. Those lacking tradition typically lack the breadth of a life lived well. Money and commerce contribute, but your culture lives within you.

    The last verse.. #TRUTH

  45. J.... M....

In any event, I've read a lot about and experienced first hand Romes; Romany or Gypsies. I've found them polite and sharing of their historical information. An raith tu ag an carraig?

  51. R.... H....

I can confirm this is not an Irish song, it bacame an intarnational Romani Hymn and Romany people over the world love and sing it in different languages and even in the romany language and sings the melody with christian lyrics, and knows it is about scottish gipsies wich are heavilly related in both blood and tongue and culture with us the romani people inn scandinavia.

good wee sang its my life

  56. g.... b....

correct, sang this song for a traveller in a dundee boozer.he laughed said it wasnt about travellers as the verse about bye laws really related to english romanies.dirty old town is written about salford, outside manchester.scottish travellers arent irish either although there are irish travellers up there.the scottish travellers are called "summer walkers" and were big into pearl fishing in rivers etc.irish travellers are also renowned exponents of road bowling and kept it going in west limerick.

@50077756 indeed i think you comments are based on ignorance...im a traveler and we pay our taxes, you will find that most tax evaders are whit collar workers, perhaps if you had a tad more education you would be able to converse with the commentators on here , sad for you.

  61. M.... o....

i heard a tinker singing opera lately, brilliant, the next pavee rotty

  62. J.... F....

I visited Eire in 1970 and I remember seeing a Tinker campsite, complete with tent etc. Can anyone please let me know if there are any Tinkers in Ireland today that lead that kind of life anymore, or have they all settled in housing projects? OIn this song, the singer mentions..."there Romani speaking". Does anyone know if the Tinkers indeed spoke the Romani lanuage? That would be very interesting as it seems to conect the Tinkers with the Gypsies of eastern europe.

  63. R.... ....

love the way that he wraps the song up...
