Dubliners, The - Avondale Lyrics

[Chorus:]
Oh have you been to Avondale
And lingered in her lovely vale
Where tall trees whisper low the tale
Of Avondale's proud eagle

Where pride and ancient glory fade
Such was the land where he was laid
Like Christ was thirty pieces paid
For Avondale's proud eagle

[Chorus]

Long years that green and lovely glade
Have lost for now our grandest Gael
And cursed the land that has betrayed
Our Avondale's proud eagle

[Chorus]

Dubliners, The Avondale Comments
  1. M.... C....

Jim's voice is only beautiful in this recording...Lovely arrangement of this great ballad by Dominic Behan...

For anyone wondering, the song is about the death of Charles Stewart Parnell. Avondale is an area of Rathdrum in Co. Wicklow where Parnell lived (proud to say I have relatives from Rathdrum). It isn't about the US mining disaster.

  3. C.... J....

Avondale was a horrible mine disaster in America

Jim McCann may be singing, but the song is by Dominic Behan methinks...

@Selinor578 It is Jim McCann singing and it is the Dubliners from when he sung with them. It was on their "A Parcel of Rogues" LP released in 1976.

  7. S.... ....

I think that's Jim McCann singing, not The Dubliners. He might have been guesting with The Dubliners at the time or something like that.

I know! The rest of the Dubs have distinct voices, but whoever this may be not so much. Well, still a great song.
