Drifters, The - Dance With Me Lyrics
Dance with me...
Dance with me...
Dance with me...
Dance with me...
Oh...hold me closer, closer and closer
Much closer
While the music plays
Mmm...darling dance with me
Oh..hold me tighter tighter and tighter
Much tighter while the rhythm sways
Mmm...put your lips to mine
While the music plays
We're no longer strangers
Dance with me, dance with me
Closer, closer and closer
And maybe we'll be lovers
When the music ends
Dance with me, dance with me
Closer, closer and closer
And maybe we'll be lovers
When the music ends
Darling won't you please
Darling won't you please
Darling won't you please

Another great song written by the late and great song writing team of Doc Pumus and Mort Schuman Doc Pumus had polio was a big inspiration to me the Masterblaster play this song on my internet radio show Classic Soul.
Photo doesn’t show the one who sang this recording: Ben E. King.
Saw Ben E King at the Twisted Wheel club in 1970 and got his autograph great man
Better music, better times.

Every time I here these as songs I think about my parents. MOM And DAD U Are TRULY MISSED LOVE YA
Greetings to all my brothers and sisters of Rhythm & Blues and of the many other Rock'n'Roll sounds that filled the airwaves during the 50s and 60s that defined our loves, losses, hopes and dreams.
Besides hearing the latest hits blaring from the radios at the local stores, I was blessed to have had a teenage aunt that would put on her latest 45 purchases: Devil or Angel by the Clovers, and many others.
No that I'm 72, these "oldies but goodies" have become immortal, and although I have an eclectic taste, I do need some level of punctuation, identifiable melody and an uncoded story line in my songs. I'm not built for anything more esoteric than "Shoobe do pah pahdah".

This is pure harmony 🎶🎼🎵🎤. The way music is used to inspire and uplift in a positive higher melodic frequency! That's how you do it Old School Style! ✌ 👍

Are the Drifters in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Great song, the 34 that gave this song a thumbs down go jump off a cliff.
The Drifters had such a beautiful melodic sound that touches your heart. Different Drifters had their own special sound. It will go on with time.
Dance With Me is a popular song. maybe it's not your favorite dalesplanes
My fave group in the late fifties and sixties...with an orchestra at that!
I was spectacularly lucky enough to meet Ben King when he was guesting at Motown The Musical. As an aside, as I was waiting, I see a man walking up the street carrying a suit bag...it was him. The cheap SOB's didn't even provide Mr. King with door-to-door cab service, much less a black car. It was a real-world illustration of how someone "famous" really had to live. We talked outside (I made him let me hold his suit bag - it was warm that day) and we talked about the Drifters days, about not being allowed to have his picture on the cover of the Spanish Harlem album (instead, there was a half-tone picture on the BACK of the album) and his respect for the other Drifters' lead singers, especially Rudy Lewis. It was a wonderful ten minutes - but then he had to leave to get ready for his ten minutes on stage. I just hope they had a cab outside for him after the show, saving him from having to go down to the corner and hail one...
wrong photo this is Ben E King not Clyde McPhatter
Love this.. should have used in dirty dancing
On this day in 1959 {December 3rd} the Drifters performed "Dance With Me" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time "Dance With Me" was at #15 on Billboard's Top 100, that would also be it's peak position on the chart, and it also spent fifteen weeks on the Top 100...
It peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} on November 9th, 1959 on Billboard's Hot R&B Sides chart, the two records that kept it out of the top spot were "So Many Ways" by Brook Benton and "Don't You Know" by Della Reese...
And on the same 'Bandstand' show they also performed "Dance With Me's" B-side, "(If You Cry)True Love, True Love", it reached #5 on the Hot R&B Sides chart and #33 on the Top 100 chart...
Between 1954 and 1966 the NYC-based group had thirty-six Top 100 records; five made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Save the Last Dance for Me", for three weeks in 1960...
Besides "Save the Last Dance for Me", their four other Top 10 records were "There Goes My Baby" {#2* for 1 week in 1959}, "Up On The Roof" {#5 in 1963}, "On Broadway" {#9 in 1963}, and "Under The Boardwalk" {#4 in 1964}...
* The week "There Goes My Baby" peaked at #2, the #1 record for that week was "A Big Hunk O Love" by Elvis...
This group is what is called "Solid Gold." Every song they put on a label was a hit. I met Ben E. King twice, 9 years apart. The first time was with The Drifters and the second time was in Atlantic City when he went it alone. He sounded in person just like he did as if he was in the studio.
so many good memories of my mom and dad dancing to this....miss them both so much..RIP
Im 20 and love it. Dont ever delete this music plss❤️
One of the grestest groups of all times and if you disagree, you must be lacking a brain..

They wouldn't know good music if it slapped them in the face.
They loved and lost
People who give it a thumbs down,Are probably listening to crap Rap noises,
Some sweet strings there too.
AMEN, AMEN and AMEN!
6 people hit the wrong thumb. This is as good as music gets & King's voice is at its ultimate best.
+arizona doowopper 6 people need a good slap but I know we're going to have to stand in a long line till it's our turn lol. Music doesn't get better than this so those 6 people must have their head up their ass. Can I get an AMEN? :o)
It's up to 48, not people from my era (I'm 67) I'm sure, who didn't love The Drifters and Ben E King? I don't think anyone
EXACTLY
Ben E, King...we will always LISTEN,FEEL and REMEMBER
RIP to one of my greatest heroes in music. Ben E King. Thank you for the great songs and singing. You are a huge inspiration to me.
RIP Ben E King. Stunning vox on this superb song.
Love this song
I luv this song, thanks simonpayne12 for sharing!!
The live videos on PBS were the best until they just removed them yesterday.
Elaine Bailey I hate that I didn’t get to see those.
What a great record
@Michael Minchella
Drifters...maybe the greatest group in rock and roll history...
Which Drifters? They were three or more versions.
@Stuart Perry Ben E King led Drifters
The Drifters songs are Priceless and they're Timeless a hundred years from the day it will be This Magic Moment thank you Drifters
@Stuart Perry all of them were fantastic in their own way, none can be faulted.
What harmony...what a sound...makes you feel that NYC sound..
Who could forget the moment you first heard it...
Bob Murphy you may feel NYC sound but all I hear is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Wonderful .... Another one the best songs for The Drifters..... Awesome......
The drifters sure had some Fantastic music .....Perfect timing......
What made this group great was the homogeneous interaction of the group and it's management. First came Clyde McPhatter, as lead singer, but he didn't own the group. Then when Atlantic took over their production and brought in Ben E King, they also brought in Lieber and Stoller to write many of the songs on this album. The rest was magic!
wow. Thanks for the info. i was a little girl when this song came. My father used to dance with me and spin me around. Then grab a chair and dance all over room while I'd laugh my head off. The song makes me "feel" the happy times. R.I.P Dad..
You left out RUDY LEWIS...
Bob Murphy and had an orchestra
Then came Carol King also. She wrote, Up on the roof. And, some kind of wonderful.
Yes, The Drifers were formed as a back up group for the great Clyde McPlatter, who was on the comeback trail when he died in The Bronx NY.
I LOVE IT. Thank you so much for posting it.
Why on earth was 'There goes my Baby' not a hit in the UK?
Love it. What a great song. And the Drifters....so mellow, so fine! Play this, then the Tuck & Patti version, then this.....
Absolutely fantastic tune by Ben E. King & the Drifters. But ... the photo above is NOT of the Drifters who sang this tune.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
Youre right Ben E. King isn't there.
Such a heart warming song from this great outfit. Seen the UK Drifters a couple of times just as good as the originals, don't know if they are still going or not.
I love this song thanks for sharing :)
