Dream Theater - Voices Lyrics
'Love, just don't stare'
He used to say to me
every Sunday morning
The spider in the window
The angel in the pool
Now the widow makes the rules
'So speak, I'm right here'
She used to say to me
not a word, not a word
Judas on the ceiling
the Devil in my bed
I guess Easter's never coming
So I'll just wait inside my head
living off my nightmares
Voices repeating me
'Feeling threatened?
We reflect your hopes and fears.'
Voices discussing me
'Others steal your thoughts
they're not confined
within your mind.'
Thought disorder
Dream control
Now they read my mind on the radio
But where was the Garden of Eden?
I feel elated
I feel depressed
Sex is death, Death is sex
Says it right here on my Crucifix
Like a scream but sort of silent
living off my nightmares
Voices protecting me
'Good behavior
brings the Savior
to his knees.'
Voices rejecting me
'Others steal your thoughts
they're not confined
to your own mind.'
[Dialogue by rap artist Prix-mo reading from the book "Cultural Revolution".]
"I don't wanna be here, 'cause of my
suffering, 'cause of my illness.
Only love is worth having, only
love is what matters, loving every
people on equal terms. "
"You've got to know who you're
dealin' with because, like a stranger,
a-heh, just might come in through
here with a gun... and then, what
would you do? (Heh.)"
"Everything is immaterial..."
"'n' you know that reality is immaterial."
"This is not reality..."
I'm kneeling on the floor
staring at the wall
like the spider in the window
I wish that I could speak
Is there fantasy in refuge?
God in politicians?
Should I turn on my religion?
These demons in my head tell me to
I'm lying here in bed
Swear my skin is inside out
Just another Sunday morning
Seen my diary on the newsstand
Seems we've lost the truth to quicksand
It's a shame no one is praying
'Cause these voices in my head
keep saying...
'Love, just don't stare.'
'Reveal the Word when you're
supposed to'
Withdrawn and introverted
Infectiously perverted
'Being laughed at and confused
keeps us pleasantly amused
enough to stay.'
Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting
Twentieth century Icon bleeding
Willing to risk Salvation
to escape from isolation
I'm witness to redemption
heard you speak but never listened
Can you rid me of my secrets?
Deliver us from Darkness?
Voices repeating me
'Feeling threatened?
We reflect your hopes and fears.'
Voices discussing me
Don't expect your own Messiah
This neverworld which you desire
is only in your mind.

Badass Outstanding!
Petrucci's solo in this one is amazing! I attempted to learn to play it, but it was short lived, haha
Immensi
3:44 「セックスしたい!」だってさ~🎶
a masterpiece!
I still say this is their best album by a mile, and this is one of the best songs on it. Just so good.
Their absolutely best song and the best song in history
Melhor banda de todos os tempos...
"Sex is death, death is sex" "Seen my diary on the newstands" (!!). Very powerful lyrics, so intense and deep, and then there´s of course the GUITAR SOLO! All in all a true masterpiece. PS: Check my channel if u will for a nice cover of this solo.
Fuck this whore!
Drink a troll

9:36 The whole song's incredible, but what a way to conclude it.
There is such an incredible beauty to this song
I just realized this after 25 years. Not sure how I missed it.
this is my favorite dream theater song. what is it actually about?
feels like it's about love, depression and religion?
Insanity
And schizophrenia
Απλά τραγούδαρα!!!!!!!!

My favorite band in this whole world....
3:30.. Those Vocals in that section. Ouch crazy
Haha a misheard lyrics there :D cannot be unheard :D
The riff that starts 3:26 is one of the most epic DT riffs.
Erotomania-injection at 4:53. God, I love this song and the whole album. If I had to pick one album of DT for the lonely island, it would be Awake!
Very underrated Dream Theatre song, the best from Awake imo
33003300 00500700
Everything good will die. Mike leaving is the shittier dimension that we got. In another one, he never left and were still getting good music from DT.
Greatest band of all time
3:26 “Fuck this whore” ???
Back in 1995 I had an audio cassette of the Awake album. I guess the album didn't fit on the tape, or whatever, but this song was snipped off at "...perfectly amused enough to stay...". Twenty years later I heard the complete version of the song on YouTube and felt so damn cheated! LOL
On cassette they left off track 10 "Scarred" as well! Yikes! I'll bet you got the CD right after earing the song on Youtube lol Rock on bro.
One of the deepest goddamn songs off one of the sickest most complete prog lps of all time.
To me Scene from a memory >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Awake

Awake - The Best work of DT!
DT sure don't write songs like this anymore, huh.
Kevin Moore is a master
Still a masterpiece!
3:26 laBrie at his best
Cannot be unheard lol :D
One, one two three four. One, one two three four.
Great song. The solo is mind boggling. JP shows that not only he can play technically(Glass moon light) but also some really soulful stuff like the solo here. I just wish DT could somehow find a way to replace their singer. I so wish they would get someone like Chuck Billy (Testament). And Portnoy back.
Abdullah Jan Chuck Billy?!? I don't see at all how someone like him would fit in a progressive metal band, and one like DT, even less. Russell Allen, probably. Jorn Lande, even more. But I can't imagine them without James. And I don't see Portnoy burying the hatchet with James anytime soon.
Are you deaf my friend?
Labrie's voice is so powerful with wonderful vibrato and striking clean gigantic high registers.
He is a vocal genius, and that voice before September of 1994 is simply one of the very best - top this world has seen yet.
my favorite guitar solo from Petrucci
great song

A lyrical masterpiece
indeed, reality is immaterial... beings and things are moving way too fast to see, you see ?
awake is most metal dt album.
Maybe the most metal in the 90's. Train of Thought and even Systematic Chaos are heavier than Awake. But you can't deny it's a masterpiece. A dark and beautiful masterpiece.
I'd say Train of Thought and Octavarium were a lot more "metal", depending on your definition of metal, but Awake was pretty up there compared to the rest of their albums.
For me One of the best guitar solos in Rock History 8:23

What about ACOS?
@Chris Reid Entertainment I guess he's just doing albums and not EPs
@SchlauKerl probably.
@Madelyn Wallingford Exactly! The Killing Hand alone makes it worth owning. That's epic! James kills it on Live At The Marquee. ☺ A Fortune In Lies is a given and my secret 2nd fav off of WDADU is The Ones Who Helped To Set The Sun. 🎸 I like Labrie a lot better than Dominici, but come on, this was a debut album by music students that was damned impressive! 🎸🎧🎶🎹😉
Awake >>>>>>>>>>>>>> metropolis PT.2
Dream theater's best three albums in order: 1. Awake 2. Images n Words 3.WDADU change my mind
Unless you wanna start WW3 pls erase your comment
Never Agree
Right, but what about SDOIT
Nah. SFAM is still better. The only album to beat SFAM are SDOIT and ToT!
Best times of the band, my favorite album of dt.
james sounds like chris cornell in some spots here
wich one?
What an album. The gtr solo in this is unbelievable.
Agreed Petrucci is amazing!
Every Dream Theater album has a story of its own. The melodies, the time signatures, the themes, they all leave a fill a unique part of your life. This is why I believe it's hard for me to say "this album is the best, this album doesn't compare to that album, that album is this," etc.
3:26 "Fuck this whore! Drink a troll! Now be with my mind, I'm the radio! But where is the girl that I'm feeding?! I feel Elaine, I feel da breast. Sucks his dick! Captain Sex! Says it right here on my crucifix!"
I don't know exactly what kind of man would have "Captain Sex" written on his crucifix, but I think he would be a badass beyond comprehension.
hahahahaa perfect!
I saw that video soooo many years ago and I still hear the damn misheard lyrics every time I listen to this song
Now be with my mind and I'm righteo!*
That solo! Petrucci's finest moment
fuck yeah!
I could listen to this intro for days straight just because of this 9/8 time. Sounds so awesome.
Rodrigo Sanchez me too
one of the best intros to any piece of music, *period.*
Masterpiece.
"Don't expect your own Messiah this Never World which you desire, is only in your mind"
What a phrase!
what does it mean ?
RingofRae RoR This song is about the religious beliefs of Petrucci that were questioned by him. To my understanding this phrase means that you should not expect someone to save you or guide you through towards the perfect world, as everything originates from your mind.
@Jim Tzikis, this song isn't about " the religious beliefs of Petrucci that were questioned by him" - Petrucci was and still is Christian. Don't confuse the lyricist with the poetic persona/speaker. This is a song about
schizophrenia which also embraces the themes of religion and love, but it's not Petrucci who is questioning any religious belief - it's the character that he's created. Your interpretation of the phrase is question is good, but I like to think that this "Neverworld" of the character is unreachable because it's an utopia from his own confused mind.
Best Song ever
that 9/8 intro
Intro explained by Portnoy one on his VHS videos :) masterpiece ;)
3:26 "Fuck this whore...!!"
No matter how many times I read the actual lyrics this is what I 'm hearing..
The intro time signature is so good
+Christiano Lorenz its in 9/8 which is counted like 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and and, 1 and etc...
One part of solo is really similar to Steve Vai's "for the love of god" (1990).
I always thought it was a tribute by petrucci, but now i'm not so sure. What is sure is that there is a big Vai's influence in that solo.
that solo is orgasmic, gives me goosebumps every single time 7:24
I keep coming back because I can't stop thinking about the 9/8 into sig.
It's a song about schizophrenia, a disease that I suffer from.
Same here, and I actually have trouble speaking.
Funny ow they nailed the feeling of not being able to talk a good quarter of the time. (in my case)
Sad to hear about your disease, but AFAIK this song (an the entire A Mind Beside Itself suite) is about Petrucci questioning his own religion/beliefs.
Fabio Riato It is, but also is about schizophrenia and paranoia (the mere title "A Mind Beside Itself" being a metaphor of paranoia). The one I'm totally sure is about schizophrenia is The Test that Stumped them All.
solidarity, brother!
@Fabio Riato I read in Metal Edge, John saying that A Mind Beside Itself was not about his religious questionings, but had been written after he'd studied scizophrenia. He joked that if it had been about his religion the first track would not have been entitled "Erotomania" I'm not sure what month issue it was, but it was in '94 with Gerri Miller of Metal Edge magazine. Rock on!
Awake was so dark, dramatic, heavy - ToT and SC were good for the same reason - the ones that had more of a progressive metal sound.
But they didn't the genius of Kevin Moore to give an appropriate background to contrast that dark atmosphere. Which is why ToT I felt fell flat in its tone. Jordan felt absent on ToT.
I always felt that Awake was the moody and subdued sister to Images and Words.
Gotta love that 6 string bass!
Perhaps their best song.
A Change of Seasons
@Nessun Dorma My Way don't get confused, this is a great song, but not top 10 material. if you want something incredible listen to A change of seasons and Octavarium or anything from Images and words. These songs are at the same level of the ones you named
@acc 320 I have to say sorry,i have listened to their whole catalogue and they're great, incredible band, probably my favorite progressive metal band in history(follow by Symphony X), i just got into this band with the incorrect songs, the Best of times was the first correct song by them that made me change my mind about them(extraordinary and emotional guitar solo)
@Nessun Dorma My Way hahaha I knew, they grow on you. One of the best bands ever regardless of the genre
@acc 320 Hahaha,i dont know why i salid that about them, maybe i wasnt in the correct mood to listen
dat guitar solo
one of their best songs(if not their best) in their absolutely best album
חחח יניב י'גבר!
Pretty good indeed, best album agreed... but "The Mirror/Lie" overcomes it to me. x)
agree to agree
Are you crazy ? Systematic Chaos is mindblowing, In the presence of enemies is easily in their top 3 songs.
all 13 albums are mindblowing in their own way. I love all of them!
Tool is very cool, another great band! But still DT is the best in prog metal :)
No, they're are a great band nontheless.
symphony x ?
I agree except on Gojira.
I do. Tool, Opeth and Gojira are way better.
Im here just for the amazing solo
It's a turn of phrase, metaphorical, not meant to be taken literally.
I respect your opinions and all, but the least you could do is spell Octavarium right.
2 dumb dudes .)
Symphony X FTW amigo!
'the last 3 rehashed frankenstein monster crud'
Have you actually heard A Dramatic Turn of Events? I'd accept you saying that for Systematic Chaos & BC&SL but ADTOE is easily their best album since Six Degrees.
NeonMugen The problem with ADTOE is that it's a poor man's Images And Words. Except for the Petrucci solo song, all others have their structures based on IAW tracks. While ADTOE feels pretty good and refreshing on the first few listens, it gets old too much too soon.

So, someone told me that DT was far more progressive than Tool, and after contrasting the styles of the two bands, I've noticed that they are two entirely different approaches to music.
It seems the way Tool works is they take seemingly simple parts and melodies and slowly evolve them through the song, whereas DT seems to alternate between multiple drawn-out and more complex melodies and themes throughout a song.
Would anybody agree with this short summary of their approaches to songs?
know what? screw all you guys!
All of DT's albums are equally number 1! they haven't let me down up to date!
