Doris Day - Steam Heat Lyrics

I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
But I need your love to keep away the cold,

I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
But I can't get warm without your hand to hold,

The radiator's hissin', still I need your kissin'...
To keep me from freezin' each night,
I got a hot water bottle, but nothin' I got'll...
Take the place of you holding me tight,

I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
But I need your love to keep away the cold,

They told me to shovel more coal in the boiler,
They told me to shovel more coal in the boiler,
They told me to shovel more coal in the boiler,
But that don't do no good,

They told me to pour some more oil in the burner,
They told me to pour some more oil in the burner,
They told me to pour some more oil in the burner,
But that don't do no good,

The radiator's hissin', still I need your kissin'...
To keep me from freezin' each night,
I got a hot water bottle, but nothin' I got'll...
Take the place of you holding me tight,

I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
I got (clang) (clang) s-s-s-steam heat,
But I need your love to keep away the cold,

As an only child left in the house alone on a Saturday ( England) , I would take my Fathers records and play them on the record player which I was forbidden to touch ..The Pyjama Game was one of my favourites - Steam Heat & Hernados Hideaway Olay ! I'd put the records carefully away just as I'd found them before my parents returned home .. little did they known what fun I'd had .

    From all
    That dwell
    Beneath the skies,
    Let praise
    To our

    Praise him
    Above,

Now we know where Micheal Jackson gets his Dance Choreography from :/ .....

Seriously though, this is a very deceptively difficult dance ....and they make it so easy, as if anyone can do it. But it is a lot harder than it looks.

I ought to know. These moves are exhaustingly difficult.

    Fosse is a genius

  10. k.... ....

I’m doing this dance for my dance show x

  12. s.... ....

    White people CAN dance. Gud.

  13. T.... S....

Awesome fabulous magic - Love it !!! Thank you :)

  14. M.... S....

Thisll be interesting, in our current run of The Pajama Game, I play Prez, as WELL as one of the dancers in this song. So we'll see how that goes

  15. J.... P....

A beautiful dance to a great song. Fantastic !

  16. E.... C....

They really need to bring back FOSSE on Broadway.

  17. C.... ....

I wonder if, like so many others, Max Wall was a Fosse fan 😀

  18. A.... R....

    Who are the men here?

  19. L.... M....

I wish I could dance, but I have terrible rythym

  20. S.... ....

Oh does this bring back memories of senior year drama club! "The Pajama Game" was my final performance with my high school's drama club, for our spring musical (I played the part of Mae, and oh was it fun!). Thank you for the memories!

  21. M.... J....

    Wow!!!!!!!!!

  24. M.... J....

    Bob Fosse ! <3

  25. c.... J....

This reminds me of mj smooth criminal

    c.... J....

chiny Jackson What? How? This is nothing like Smooth Criminal . This is some old Broadway type of shit nobody is dancing anymore. Smooth Criminal's chroreography is a timeless masterpiece created by MJ and Vincent Patterson. If in the 1980s MJ had danced like these three guys he would have been laughed out of the room

  26. S.... W....

This alone is proof that the fifties were not just a wasteland of kitsch and conservatism.

  27. p.... !....

This was the song I danced to for my dance show

  28. .... l....

a friend of mine and her friends did this for musical Theatre and now I understand the choreography they decided to do

  29. M.... F....

It makes you feel good. And sad for today's generation. We-in the art world- let them down.

  30. A.... A....

Last time white socks and loafers were cool.

    A.... A....

Acgogo Acgogo Actually they were cool long after this. Elvis, Travolta, Kelly, MJ all wore white socks and loafers and looked and danced much cooler than these guys.

  32. A.... C....

This is my favorite dance routine on "Steam Heat" from Pajama Game!

  33. s.... l....

Fosse's choreography always looks dated to me, unlike Gene Kelly's.Maybe overexposure?

    s.... l....

i agree compleley. i guess i should look closer at kelly, but i don't think fosse can hold a candle to jerome robbins, whose work, for me, is timeless

    s.... l....

susan lloyd They are dated. Kids don't learn to dance like Fosse today. Kelly was much more fun and Singing in the Rain is still considered cool.

    s.... l....

Douglas Trazzare Fosse cannot hold a candle to James Brown, Vincent Paterson, Michael Peters, Michael Jackson or the Electric Boogalos all of whom created choregoraphies which are still considered fresh and legendary whole Fosse's choreos aged horribly.

    s.... l....

I think it's because Fosse always tried to seem cool, which is the polar opposite of being cool.

  34. Z.... S....

    Family Guy any one?

  35. s.... o....

It is in full respect to Miss Haney, at to her talent and skill--that she was suffering from Cancer--while she was making this picture. And delivered a terrific performance. It would be so great--in her honor, to have had her in the top-of-health at the time of production; and one can only imagine the greater dynamics and power-performance that she would have delivered. Have read that during the many rehersals and takes...Miss Haney, started to falter and the male members of this number--great personal friends of hers, stood by her and added some of their energy and emotional support that helped her find the 'inner furnace' that many a dancer searches for, when they have that momentary 'sag' of energy; and go on to give a filmed definitive interpretation of this dance number.

    s.... o....

She died from pneumonia, with complications from diabetes and alcoholism, not cancer.

Thank you so much for uploading this .. just fabulous:))

  39. L.... W....

I had a Pointer Sister LP in the early Seventies, they sang this song on the Album it was so good. I never new where it came from now I know thank you.

    L.... W....

    Not " new"..it's knew . ;)

    L.... W....

I had that album too, I used to listen to their version of Steam Heat. Fun.

  40. M.... T....

A deceptively easy looking dance. fossy at his best the essence of movement perfectly distilled and an exact physical representation of the song!

    M.... T....

I agree. I am not a professional in this world; but, still, anyone can see it: the minimalist expertise, the saying of everything that needs to be said in as few movements as possible. And it flies off the stage. (That's why I like dance.)

    M.... T....

    Mark Trawczynski Indeed!

  41. K.... P....

It's Gwen Verdon in the film.

    K.... P....

Gwen Verdon is not in this film.

    K.... P....

Nope. Gwen Verdon was married to Bob Fosse that's as close as she got.
Doris Day played the lead role in the film version.

In the original Broadway production the lead was played by Janis Paige.

Carol Haney played Gladys in both versions until she broke her ankle while on Broadway and an unknown actress named Shirley MacLaine took over the role.

    K.... P....

No. Gwen didn't do Pajama Game. It was Carol Haney both stage and film.

  42. M.... S....

Proves why I didn't hope to be a Broadway star in music. I know I couldn't be Carol. The search for success would have killed me. I didn't have it and that urge would have killed me. So many who hope to make it despite the setbacks. Props to you!

  43. M.... S....

Geez. I, Iove Carol Haney! Too soon!

  44. E.... S....

Such excellence -- Fosse, Haney, et al. Terrific!

  45. W.... W....

It's fascinating the subtle changes Ann Reinking made in "re-interpreting" this work for the "Fosse" show, same as her revisions for the "Chicago" revival. By and large I just think she improved on it while remaining true to the original. GREAT seeing this original version!

  46. b.... ....

    Brilliant.

  47. m.... ....

    Michael Jackson any one ?

  48. Y.... D....

i had to learn part of the dance for school

  49. M.... D....

This routine is sooo cool. Carol Haney was so good with Fosse choreography. My favorite part is that move they do at 2:27

  50. d.... ....

Carol Haney is something else!!! Love Fosse's choreography!

    d.... ....

+dancewomyn1 Isn't it amazing all these years later that his work seems fresh and new. Haney is loved, loved, loved.

    d.... ....

Indeed!!!  Great work, danced by great artists!

    d.... ....

@dancewomyn1 It is a bit of a shame that when Chicago was revived Reinking did a "in the style of" but that was kinda ok. When the movie was made Marshall got rid of Fosse's choreography. So I'm really glad that his work is preserved in some brilliant ways on film. By the way, search for the video with Lena Horne and Carol Haney dancing.

    d.... ....

I agree! Back in 1980 I danced with Ann Reinking on a CBC TV Special called Dancin Man with Jeff Hyslop among others. She truly was extraordinary! Closest the real deal "Fosse" as possible

  51. L.... ....

I'm doing parts of this dance for my jazz class :)

  52. C.... H....

Such a great number! I saw it on Broadway (yes, I'm that old) with the great Carol Haney. It was this show that Shirley MaLaine went on as Haney's understudy and became a major star.

    C.... H....

+Juliaflo HA! She used to known as John Raitt's daughter. He was my Mom's fave - he and Harry Belafonte!

    C.... H....

That would have been absolutely incredible!!!

    C.... H....

Wasn’t very impressed being cast as mae! Peter!!!!! Especially when everyone knew the casting of the original film apart from me until this year!

It’s strange how other people’s intentions can have a huge affect on ya life! 🙄😒

Have you read ‘Wayne Dyer the power of intentions’

    https://g.co/kgs/isu1MU

    C.... H....

Cheryl Hansen it wasn’t Shirley, it was Peter and he was making a point about carol and Eddie!

And I get targeted and tarred with the same brush! And cast as the fat ugly woman!!!!

And was blind to the fact for 48 years! 😭

    C.... H....

Cheryl, I would have LOVED to be "that old" to see this live on Broadway !!
    Cordial wishes from Italy ....

  53. Z.... ....

They told me to shove ah more coal in da boilah! LOOOOOVE it! Fosse was the greatest choreographer and Gwen Verdon could dance the pants off of anyone!

    Z.... ....

@Anita Zenobia That's Carol Haney, not Gwen.

    Z.... ....

oh thanks for letting me know. I was wondering.

  54. J.... D....

    More cowbell!

    J.... D....

    John Doe you're everywhere :)

  55. D.... T....

I'm curious:  what exactly is the purpose of this scene?  I realize it's a musical, but since when does a union meeting have choreographed song and dance entertainment? My late father was a pipefitter, and I have no doubt that the alcohol flowed freely at those meetings, yet he never mentioned musical numbers.
Next,Gladys works as part of the corporate staff in the office, so why in the world would SHE even be attending the union meeting, much less providing the entertainment for it? That makes no sense.

Note:  I'm not being critical of the performances, just the logic (or lack therof) for this scene to even be in the movie/play in the first place.

Any explanations would be sincerely appreciated.

    D.... T....

    and it bombed onstage.

    D.... T....

Gladys was NOT a corporate employee. She was a secretary, and thus a member of the garment workers' union.

    D.... T....

    LET IT GO

    D.... T....

I am so late to the game here, Dessert Tray - but I have to chime in regarding the purpose of this number. The hardest thing, and I mean THE hardest thing to accomplish in ALL musicals is to begin Act II. Most musicals have just had such a climactic moment at the curtain of the first act (i.e. blossoming relationships are threatened (Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma), protagonists are in danger of losing security (Fiddler of the Roof), death (West Side Story), psychopaths have had an epiphany (Sweeney Todd), just to name a few). The question is, how do you jump start that energy and depth of plot after a 10-15 minute intermission now that the audience has had the chance to catch its breath and down a Chardonnay or two? Hence the bizarre Act II openers: "Shipoopi", "Who's Got the Pain," "Too Darn Hot", "Steam Heat", "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile", "Ooom Pah Pah", and it goes on and on... They are so loosely associated with the plot, that (to me) they merely are Entr'actes with words. And that's totally fine. I agree with you - Steam Heat has ZERO bearing on this plot. It acts to re-inject that lively feeling and atmosphere that existed just before the curtain. There are a few openers that are stunningly wonderful - "I Feel Pretty" comes to mind immediately as the best. We've just seen Riff and Bernardo die as the curtain fell. We now see Maria waiting to meet Tony on the roof, but there is dramatic irony - she does not know yet (although we, the audience sure as hell knows) that her brother is dead and that the lover she's waiting for, has killed him. It is a brilliant stroke of craft. "What Did I Miss" from Hamilton works fabulously as well. "Steam Heat" - no way. But damn, is it awesome to watch!

    D.... T....

@Dessert Tray "Willing suspension of disbelief"

  56. M.... S....

Bob Fosse's first masterpiece. There would be many more.

    M.... S....

Fosse choreographed and danced in "Kiss Me Kate" with Ann Miller 1952, I think. In 3D!

    M.... S....

    Mark Schildberg Indeed! Thank goodness!

    M.... S....

Mark Schildberg But this is not his first. Check out Kiss Me Kate. He dances with Ann Miller

  57. C.... H....

I got (clang clang) steam heat, but I need your love to keep away the cold. So..... C'mon Union! Get hot!

  59. P.... S....

Fucking incredible!!!!!!!! That is some beautiful choreography!

    P.... S....

+Pablo Sergio Rivera MUST it be "fucking" incredible, Pablo? How common.

    P.... S....

Really bitch? You are not going to make a snarky ass comment. What are you, a fucking hipster? Hipsters are SO 5 years ago.... You really thing you're all that? That you have esoteric appeal? Grow a pair, will ya?

  60. l.... ....

    love it!

  61. J.... N....

super BOB FOSSE dance choreography !

  62. J.... M....

I so love this! It is one of my favorite numbers from any musical. What do they call those songs that get stuck in your head and play over and over and over? Ear worms, maybe? Whatever, this is that! Gosh, I wish I could move like that! I'm not a dancer, so I've no idea of the difficulty of this number, but it is wicked cool. This and the barn raising scene from 7 Brides for 7 Brothers are my go to bits when I'm feeling down. Makes me smile every time! I want this song for my ringtones!

  63. b.... ....

    thank YOU!!!!!!

  64. K.... K....

  69. D.... F....

    D.... F....

    I agree!

    D.... F....

    I was thinking the same...#fossefossefosse

    D.... F....

And step into a black jazz nightclub in the 1930s and you'll know where Fosse got his.

  93. T.... ....

Well, thanks for your replies. I appreciate it....What I am looking for is Steam Heat with about 2 dozen dancers/singers in it...They show at a bar here quite often, so I guess I have to go ask them where it came from...I love the one you posted, but I like this bigger production better. Just don't know where it comes from....Thanks babe!

  94. T.... ....

This is not the MOVIE! Not what I wanted, but thanks. This is the same clip of Steam Heat that I already have from the Broadway Production. Thanks anyway.
