Yes I saw this movie in late 50's. I was in junior high. Bonners ferry Idaho at the rex theater. :)

I’m actually doing this show this year at my high school, we open in 2 days. I love this musical so much, and I especially love this song.

This is wonderful, as is the whole movie. It's essentially the show filmed, so we have forever a record of a top 50s musical done at a time when the American musical itself was at its zenith. A wonderful native art, now, alas, mostly defunct.

What I love about Doris Day wasn't just appeal her next door charms but her classy  disposition.  It is amazing when you see her with her stylist clothes she can compete with other actresses that are sophisticated.

One of the FEW movies that used the original Broadway performers. With the exception of Doris Day and Barbara Nichols,
all these ladies had 1000+ performances under their belt.

Rae Allen was also not in the film.

Not was Gwen Verdon; see would have been in the seen steam heat.

I saw the pajamas game movie on TV back in the 1960s, and today 3 songs are missing from it why?

Coincidentally, three songs were dropped from the Broadway show for the film version: (1) A New Town Is a Blue Town (John Raitt); (2) Her Is (Carol Haney and Stanley Prager); and (3) Think of the Time I Save (Eddie Foy, Jr.). Which songs do you recall being cut from the film?

When Pajama Game was shown on TV in the 1960s on channel 9, these 3 songs were ALWAYS included. Now, on DVD, these songs are missing from the movie . Why?

Many of the original Broadway cast was retained for the film with the major exception being Doris Day replacing Janis Paige who I read was really pissed off about that.

mmcckkgg Janis was really pissed because originally she was supposed to be in it opposite Frank Sinatra as the male lead. When Frank backed out the studio insisted on one solid mainstream film star. So when they brought on John Raitt they cast Doris Day and Janis was dropped. I must admit I do feel bad for her, even though I prefer Doris' rendition of this song.

I love factory girls in full skirts, crolines and heels. 

They cleaned up some of the lyrics for the movie of "Pajama Game" but it didn't significantly hurt the show.  Doris Day is very good here.  Why didn't she get cast in "South Pacific"?

@unclealand I didn't either although I liked her in S.Pacific, her voice esp. "I'm as corny as springtime in Kansas...."  but I saw her with my late wife in a small round theatre on Long Island, NY and she was amazing...funny, sexy, danced great and a one woman show with many costume changes...   I didn't appreciate Ms.Day until later on and now I love her voice as well as her acting and esp. love that song on Pajama Game, "I'm not at all in love"...  

@jms34668 Wonder why they kept shooting everyone in "South Pacific" through an amber lens.  It gave everyone a hepatitis appearance.

+unclealand Supposedly at the time, since color was such a novelty, it was fashionable for films to color film with those lenses for artistic effect, and supposedly (I've been told) audiences responded favorably to it.

It's similar to the reason why we have that horrible grey-blue wash filter on films nowadays that washes out any and all colors, only for the opposite reason.

She was the number one candidate. But her husband, Martin Melcher kept upping her price. He literally priced her out of the picture. Too bad - it would have been perfect for Doris!

It's too bad they redid the lyrics for the film; I loved the Broadway version when she says, "All you've got to do is be polite with him, and THEY'VE got you spending the night with him."

I recall when the movie came out! :) Great staging. In answer to those taken back by actors not being good singers. Musical comedy actors are chosen first for their acting ability. If they can also sing in tune, so much the better. But it's not the main requirement. And thereby is the charm of a musical comedy. Singing out of tune is OK.

Two good examples are (1) Walter Houston in "Knickerbocker Holiday," who was an actor foremost. Turns out his rendition of "September Song" is a classic. He wander off key. Thus composer Kurt Weill composed the song in a key range Houston could handle So did (2) Gertrude Lawrence in "The King and I" waver off musical pitch.

BTW, yes, I compose music for musicals. :)

It's the style of the song. There was supposed to be a lot of speak-singing and the character of Babe is supposed to be really strong and bold so that's how she's supposed to sing. If you don't know what you're talking about then I'd suggest not posting.

I would love to live in the 50s!!!!! it was a mush more simpler time and everything was grand about it!! the people, the music, the style, the way people danced, the way they sang, where the usual hangout was, I was born in the wrong time period and I tell that to myself everyday!

African Americans sat in the back of the bus. Latinos were seen as half breeds... And gays... Well we better like our closets. Its a simpler time because its being romanticized. It is just as complex as today and it was just as complex as the decades before it.

However during this area there were movies like Carmen Jones, The Defiant Ones , West Side Story, Tea & Sympathy...and others. Yes, maybe a few but take a look. Rita Hayworth, for example, was Spanish descent from her father. Katy Jurado was Mexican....

@Arno L. two examples of hard working latin women who made it... opposed to the hundreds of white actors/actresses who got in because of a certain "look." I love the music and aesthetic of the time, but OperaThesp is right... it wasn't a great time for minorities and anyone who disagrees is really ignorant about our countries history. Gay people were just allowed to marry in this country THIS decade. and segregation was still a big part of the 20th century.

I am 72 and was there when all these films were made. They were shown all over the globe to great audiences of happy fans. People did not mistake what they were seeing on the screen with daily life and they did not feel envious or sad because they were seeing glamour and richness on screen. They loved escaping daily life for a few hours and they were ready afterward to go back to real life. To inject some sort of political element where there was none is dishonest.

This number makes me want to break out in song and dance in the checkout line at Vons.

We can see american very modern and fashion in the 50's at that time in the muscial. It would be very surprising and attractive if you could watch this musical in cinema in 50's while all place in the world still in poverty environment if you have a time machine back to that period of time.

I think in the forties and fifties a LOT of attention was paid to perfection in vocal delivery, much more than today.
I absolutely HATE musicals, but Doris made me watch this with delight. Her timing was, as always, perfect and her acting was unusually natural for these days. She literally put life into the lyrics.

I've seldom seen a moviestar ooze so much charisma. I'm getting more fan by the minute.

@SingingFool123 I think if you were used to modern musicals were people open there mouths to sing and a computer generated vocal comes out then yes, this could be viewed as bad singing. What I like about it is that the imperfection of her voice is part of what makes it so beautfiful. I also like that in legitimate musical theatre the perfomers put their character into the singing, like here everyone is not singing perfectly, but would you expect a group of women in a factory to be great singers?

@Rouben19 Sorry, Rouben, but it's my understanding she was nominated more than once -- "Love Me or Leave Me", "Calamity Jane" ... I could be wrong, but that's what I've heard. Nonetheless, she's a National Treasure!

I was brought up in that era, the 50s and 60s was such a wonderful time to grow up in. I was a big fan of Doris Day and went to all her movies and bought all her records. I'm still a big fan of hers today. .

@SingingFool123 Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I completely disagree! Back then, I think that people put a lot more heart and soul into their singing than they tend to now. Now it's all about perfect technique and perfect vibrato, but a lot of times it seems like people aren't paying attention to the message of the song. I'm 19, and I would have LOVED to have lived in the 1940's/50's. But, to each her own!

I got the CD of the 1954 Orig BWY cast, Janis Paige was Babe. It's amazing how close this sounds to the Orig , but some of the words intro were changed.
