Donovan - To Try For The Sun Lyrics

We stood in the windy city,
The gypsy boy and I.
We slept on the breeze in the midnight
With the rain droppin' tears in our eyes.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.
We huddled in a derelict building
And when he thought I was asleep
He laid his poor coat round my shoulder,
And shivered there beside me in a heap.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.
We sang and cracked the sky with laughter,
Our breath turned to mist in the cold.
Our years put together count to thirty,
But our eyes told the dawn we were old.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.
Mirror, mirror, hanging in the sky,
Won't you look down what's happening here below?
I stand here singing to the flowers,
So very few people really know.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.
We stood in the windy city
The gypsy boy and I.
We slept on the breeze in the midnight,
With the rain droppin' tears in our eyes.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.

I still play this song it reminds me of the sixties when my best buddy and I used to hitch hike to various beach towns in Wales and Cornwall where we would sleep on the beaches.Amazing times.

to partially answer some folks: isn't it possible to give thanks for both Dylan and Donovan? Why do we have to disparage one or the other? They both have some awesome songs. The only difference for me is that Dylan was / is prolific for 60 years. I love this song by Donovan and many more of his. I love many of Dylan's songs as well, but not all. No one is perfect, especially into their seventies!

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.....

In damn tears!! So pure and beautiful. Our cities tap water is now contaminated with harmful toxic blue green algae, and it likely because of bad farming practices. SO listening to this and his vision of purity really hits home at this moment especially. Love Donovan forever.

  16. D.... M....

A great voice, some nice guitar, and a little harmonica, is all you need.

  17. A.... ....

The 1 dislike is probably Daedalus... And if you get this your a huge nerd!

To Try For The Sun    Donovan     From the album fairytale               We stood in the windy city,
    The gypsy boy and I.
We slept on the breeze in the midnight
With the raindrop and tears in our eyes.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.
We huddled in a derelict building
And when he thought I was asleep
He laid his poor coat round my shoulder,
And shivered there beside me in a heap.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.
We sang and cracked the sky with laughter,
Our breath turned to mist in the cold.
Our years put together count to thirty,
But our eyes told the dawn we were old.
And who's going to be the one
To say it was no good what we done ?
I dare a man to say I'm too young,
For I'm going to try for the sun.
Mirror, mirror, hanging in the sky,

I dare a man to say I'm too young, for I'm going to try for the sun...

    Z.... R....

Never too young and never too old!

  25. S.... ....

Beautiful song from a master songwriter!

  26. R.... R....

What a beautiful tune, great words: and a really resonant MODERN message

  27. S.... Y....

    So sublime.

  28. O.... t....

Beautiful imagery, makes me think about my little brother, and hope that others will treat him good in this life journey he's taking on. The best I could do is to continue to treat others like my brothers

  29. R.... L....

    Beautiful words, lovely guitar work

    R.... L....

It pictures the time, you walked with your guitar on your shoulder, some more came by, you sat down, you sang - and enjoyed life .... now we have to go to fitness at 2 o'clock, hairdresser at 4, manicure at 5 - HAHAHAHAHA back then we took a pair of scissors and off it went, it would fall into place in a few days!

  30. J.... K....

The lyrics say it all ! That wonderful era of Aquarius, when people, if required, still put their brother & sister before their own selfish needs. An era we have now becom to jaded & introspect to recapture for those who are mere "Infants in Learning", in these oft daunting & dark times.

    J.... K....

It remembers me of my highschool days when I often in summer lay down in the meadow among our horses and looked at the clouds and listened to the grass grow - too bad most young people put plugs in their ears 24 hours a day

    J.... K....

We were aquarian gypsies from 1963 on sometimes cold, sometimes hungry living in the street, free spirits all
