Donovan - Hampstead Incident Lyrics

Standing by the Everyman, digging the rigging on my sail
Rain fell to sounds of harpsichords, to the spell of fairy tale.
The heath was hung in magic mists, enchanted dripping glades,
I'll taste a taste until my mind drifts from this scene and fades
In the night time.
Crystals sparkle in the grass, I polish them with thought
On my lash there in my eye a star of light is caught.
Fortunes told in grains of sand, here I am is all I know
Candy stuck in children's hair, everywhere I go
In the night time,
In the night time.
Gypsy is the clown of love, I paint his face a smile
Anyone we ever make we always make in style. Yeah!
Yeah, strange young girls with radar screenings, yeah,
And hands as quick as hate
I won't just now, later on maybe and even then I'll wait
In the night time,
In the night time.
In the night time.

Donovan Hampstead Incident Comments
  1. B.... M....

One of the best singer-songwriters of the '60s and one day will get the credit he deserves !!

  2. m.... m....

okay, i'm gonna comment on all yall idiots commenting on the stupid "chord progression" plagiarism crap....

almost all western music songs from time immemorial have followed certain chord progressions.....it's not plagiarism, it's just the way of music.....idiots.....

  3. m.... m....

i happen to live in an "enchanted dripping glade,"....and i make a point of going outside "in the night time" to sing this song........may be my favorite song of all time......

besides "how great thou art" and "what a friend we have in Jesus," of course.....

oh, and the doxology......"praise God, from whom ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!!!!!!"...

especially those night times when my enchanted glade is dripping...... :

  4. R.... C....

Not that one can plagiarize a chord progression, but Zeppelin used a similar progression for Baby I'm Going to Leave You with much the same feel as this tune as others have noted previously. Interesting how everyone was influencing everyone, so to speak. "Same as it ever was" to quote TH.

    R.... C....

did you know that the first time you heard led zeppelin was donovan's "hurdy gurdy man?"

i doubt it......but just replace plant with donovan's voice, and it's the first zeppelin recording.....truth

    R.... C....

Indeed, I did know that, at the very least, Jimmy Page was on the track. Thanks for the info.

  5. C.... M....

Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You vs Hampstead Incident. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

    C.... M....

this preceded the other by two or three years, both are awesome songs

    C.... M....

hampstead incident came first......easy enough question

  6. J.... M....

    Παλετα sample

  7. D.... R....

Damn this is good. But no one talks about it. Donovan has to be the most under-rated of the big 60s musical acts.

    D.... R....

he has been thrown into a memory hole, for some reason.....he was really big in his time, as big as dylan, but for some reason no one wants to remember him....

i'm curious as to why.... i don't think he did anything particularly un-PC,,,,,,,,,but he's still down the memory hole......

    i remember him., tho.... :)

  8. A.... G....

Just putting this out there, love the song for ages but Hampstead Satanic Cult?

  9. t.... r....

i've gone deaf in my right ear

    t.... r....

obviously messed up by the person who uploaded this one, eh?

  10. P.... P....

Now reply the opening riff and in your best Robert Plant voice sing"Babe, baby, baby I'm a gonna leave you"
Anyway great song by Donovan in his great era
He and Page are friends so we won't likely see a Taurus thing here, plus I like that Page sped this up...

    P.... P....

Wow, I just jumped here from the Plebs version of babe. I was searching for anne's original, which I don't think any recording exists of. Plant was a master thief wasn't he. I wonder if the chords in this are the same as in the original, or Baez version of babe.

  11. T.... D....

One of my favorite songs of all time.

    T.... D....

    +Tipi Dan

yes.......i sing it out loud at night when the fog is dripping on my own "enchanted dripping glades in the night time......".....

  12. J.... N....

Both those other songs use the same chord sequence!
