Donny Hathaway - Someday We'll All Be Free Lyrics

Hang on to the world as it spins around
Just don't let the spin get you down
Things are moving fast
Hold on tight and you will last
Keep your self respect, your manly pride
Get yourself in gear
Keep your stride
Never mind your fears
Brighter days will soon be here
Take it from me, someday we'll all be free, yeah

Keep on walking tall
Hold your head up high
Lay your dreams right up to the sky
Sing your greatest song
And you'll keep going, going on
Take it from me, someday we'll all be free
Hey, just wait and see, some day we'll all be free, yeah
Take it from me, someday we'll all be free
It won't be long, take it from me, someday we'll all be free
Take it from me, take it from me, take it from me...

Who is this "Chi" everyone is referring to? I was a 60-70s child enjoying this song. The first time I heard it, I was a Donny Hathaway fan. Really it was "the Ghetto" I heard first. Then this song. Just a side note Bobby Womack redid this song with the Jazz Crusaders Wilton Felder. It did justice to Donny Hathaway.

If you have ever suffered from depression...you can feel every bit of Donnys pain as he sang that song. The beauty of the song is beyond words❤❤

Just JuanGoodCitizen. What a beautiful story. I remember 2011, and it was one of the worst years for me. It was a year of awakening. Not a year of being free of pain because I was still in chains and in much, much emotional pain, but it was a year when I remember falling so deeply in love with this song and an awakening to that I was somebody. Juan it’s so beautiful to see sooo many responses to your post. I can tell you’re a passionate person from you describing your time in 2011 and your bus ride, the passion for your future and love for your son. I used to sing this song in my head back in ‘11 too, just to get through and still it’s my favorite. But now, for me, it’s not someday I’ll be free; I am free. It’s 8 years later for you, and I know you and your son are free. And like Donny said “someday we’ll ALL be free” all of us, in the very near future brotha. Continued Peace.

    And thank you Donny.

Loved this beautiful song since I heard Aretha's version in the closing credits of Malcolm X. When I watched Donny Hathaway's Unsung episode, I knew I had to hear all of his songs. All last year, as the days were winding down for my terminally ill sister, I listened to this song. I held on. She became free. And someday so will I.

White dude, grew up in a Black World by choice. The laughter, the rhythms, the Art, just felt right. Donny, Marvin, Philip Bailey..brought me Light. This particular tune...peace. Played it through many broken days. Today, his gracious daughter, Lalah carries on..., " Make
me a Beliver " so dear to my heart., Why did I mention my color at all?

To let you know the SOUL is blind.

That IN God WE are One. And,

in july 2011 i broke up with my girlfriend. i thought this woman was the love of my life. she was everything i wanted in a woman. and yet i felt scared and confused because i just couldnt allow myself to get close to this woman. shortly afterwards she started seeing someone else. i wass utterly crushed with feelings of abandonment and betrayal. i turned to God. I went to church. and i found this song. i remember going back behind the church where they had a path to walk on for prayer, and listening to this song many times over. feeling so hurt and not knowing why. i thought maybe i would have to die and go to heaven to be free. fast forward 8 years and im going through mental health counseling and finding all my issues and all my pain came from my childhood. as i allow myself to suffer and and get better, i remember the hope this song gave me. its so beautiful. and the sadness too. how sad and confused i was. what i found in the end were that Christ's words "if you want to be my disciple, take up your cross and follow after me" were truly profound. i had no idea how true they were. my therapy has been about allowing myself to feel the excruciating pain of a child scared and totally abandoned from abuse and only in opening these doors to my pain am i able to let go of it all. i see now that i dont have to die to be free, i just have to suffer. and my heart goes out to anyone else suffering. Donny I realize this song was about your suffering. I feel such an immense sadness thinking about your life.... I love you. And i thank you for giving me hope. Because Im on my way to freedom on this earth... I love you, Donny. God bless you.
