This song must be soooo difficult to play as a musician. There are so many levels of difficulty in this song. The pacing, the breaks, the chord shifts.. freaking amazing. Because they make it sound so fluid and easy. And Donny sings it so easily. Beyond genius.

One of the things I loved about Donny Hathaway was his ability to put SO MUCH into a song. For instance, this song starts in 5/4 time, switches back and forth from 4/4 to 3/4 throughout the song, then ends in 3/4. It has non traditional chord progressions, a samba rhythm at times, strings, brass, that RHODES, eclectic lyrics, no background vocals at all, yet is smooth and “full” sounding. He was a pure genius. My favorite r&b artist of all time.

Back when I used to do a lot of traveling (campaign work) for the DNC, I made sure to have this tune on my MP3 player......whenever I was flying in the skies, across America.
This is just perfect to hear, when you're up there at 35,000 feet/

This would have been a great commercial jingle for an airline. Donny Hathaway is musical genius personified, gone way too soon at 33.

It was, in fact, originally written and commissioned as a prospective commercial jingle for an airline! I believe it was for United Airlines. When the airline decided not to use it, after all, Donny recorded it for himself--the rest is history.

Thank you Love112489 for posting this song. I first heard this song when I was 14, I was amazed just like I am today. Donny Hathaway was a very special Artist gone too soon. His voice and his playing being a keyboardist myself very inspiring. This was creative music with lyrics that was not distasteful or disrespectful.This kind of music needs to come back. RIP Donny and may your music and soul live forever! Beautiful Song!
