DJ Shadow - In / Flux Lyrics

It's a song about life, death, love, hate, wealth, poverty, racism...
Just a few things been running through my head...
Listen... We call on you... Listen... Now, we call on you...
Be strong... Hear us now!...

When you speak of overthrowing those conditions
I think this is what frightens people from the freedom of...
The average American, when you simply say the word overthrow
May see this as something very, very bad...
I know you're not responsible for his feelings
But, when you say these things, are you threatening someone?
Right now... People's power, People's power... People's... power
Detroit in '42... New York in '64...
Blinding by a hundred watts... The naked, black, white truth...
Destroy the establishment,
Tear down the face of stupidity and corruption
And put up in it's place, an edifice of truth...
Unite in struggle for people's power... Unite, unite, unite, truth...
Unite in struggle for people's power...
We are a part of those concerned with gangs...

Meanwhile, uptown, the DJ a player...

Everybody's so concerned about heroin and marijuana and all that,
Until they forget the most dangerousest narcotic that exist's,
And that's the narcotic that's injected into the minds of infants...
It's called social narcotics...
So, you know as well as I do that things are changing...
Yeah, change, you know...

Meanwhile, uptown, the DJ a player... Revolution...
Yeah, change, you know... My gift... Make music...

So I say you youngster's gotta get a job
Work to change the system...
Definacy... Equal, justice... Submission...
...Moving on... The people's power...
...Ghetto wack, lining my ears... My gift... Make music...
Change, change, change, it's only a matter of time
Change, change, change, it's only a matter of time
Change, change, change, it's only a matter of time
Change, change, change, change... It's only a matter of time
Freedom! (Freedom!)... That's all that life is...
The record ends and we must begin again...

  11. m.... ....

Crazy to think THE track that brought about the term Trip-Hop in 1994, is slept on heavy by the ever expanding trip-hop presence on the Youtube platform. The shoemaker's kids have no shoes...

  12. h.... ....

9:26 is my favorite part. It’s “Music Maker” by Abel

  13. P.... G....

    Beautiful Samples !

  14. F.... ....

One of my favorite songs...and I live in the digital age. That must mean something.

The production makes me cum wads even without lossless quality. This has to be good.

  15. T.... -....

    GEEEAAAARRR!!!

  16. K.... D....

The album cover conjures up Basquiat.

    K.... D....

Shadow and Basquiat have a lot in common in my opinion. Both take their influences from so many different sources. Mixing their media into something incredible.

  17. s.... j....

great to find this .... I'm sure the last track was a DJ Krush one ... anyone else know it?

  18. E.... S....

    zgermans didn!t like this

Does anybody know that flute sample first heard at 00:27 (and then throughout the song). Sounds like something from Kitty White’s Newborn album but it is not. Please help!! (And tag me in the answer please lol)

  22. C.... A....

  23. K.... ....

Sounds like a Sonic CD track :D

    K.... ....

  28. A.... S....

The 'Change' sample is from Frank Foster - the Loud Minority.
Listen to it if you wanna get your mind blown.

    A.... S....

Frank was ahead of his time too.

  29. a.... r....

I remember twisting up a blunt parking at this spot over looking the city and let my mind wonder !! DJ Shadow was waaaay ahead of the game!!

  31. D.... H....

    Mozart of... DJ stuff...

  32. T.... D....

First song to be officially coined "Trip Hop"

    T.... D....

Really, and there was me thinking Trip Hop was a British movement that started in the early 90's

    T.... D....

@steven Pollock 'The term "trip-hop" first appeared in print in June 1994. Andy Pemberton, a music journalist writing for Mixmag, used it to describe Mo' Wax Records Artist (U.K.) RPM and (American) DJ Shadow's "In/Flux" single.'

  33. S.... ....

anyone know the piano sample at 3:14??

  34. M.... D....

Been looking for this track from the back of my memory.

  35. k.... ....

Always got time for this. Still epic sampling and vibe. Still the same battles. Thank you.

  36. P.... A....

    MASSIVE

  37. a.... ....

also he sampled the bassline from  massive attack - better things

    a.... ....

    Well done!

    a.... ....

Don’t think so. It’s from a soul a record can’t remember the title though.

    a.... ....

I looked in to it a bit and it seems that In/Flux was released in 1993 and Better things later on in 1994. However, as Elroi mentions they are probably both sampling the same source. Whosampled.com suggests that the source is 'Never can say goodbye' and I would have to agree. Cool sample no matter what.

    a.... ....

    Aviatorix yeah that’s the one

  38. J.... P....

    ES HERMOSA!

  39. q.... ....

Guru would've rapped on this one.

  40. R.... S....

My best friend died this week. He was a huge fan and thankfully, his family appreciates how much he loves music: we're playing his favorite music during the ceremony. This song is happening for sure.

    R.... S....

Robert Speaks you're friend had great taste in music, and I don't feel it a stretch to say, will be sorely missed.

    R.... S....

    R.... S....

  48. b.... l....

When i was in middle school i went to a record store, i picked an album based upon the fact that it said "dj", and i had no idea what i was buying. It was this album, boy did i get lucky. It is insanely epic.

    b.... l....

    Indeed.

    b.... l....

bob loblaw there is luck, there is only casualties or may i say, causalities

    b.... l....

My nan got me Jive bunny and the master mixers one Christmas. That year I discovered mixtapes as I'd been raving for some time. I was keen to hear some of the mixes from nights I had attended. My nan got half the story and .. hey presto Jive Bunny sunshine. RIP Reeny Taylor

    b.... l....

This was me exactly too ! I was getting into 90s DJ culture , saw this cassette and was like “well this looks cool” . Changed my life

    b.... l....

@Sapiens Strength I was the exact same with a cassette of Endtroducing in 1997 in a sound shop in Texas.

  49. l.... ....

    excellent piece

  50. T.... ....

One of great examples of trip-hop

    T.... ....

@HighlyOpi{nion}ated kickboy face was a hero

    T.... ....

It’s really just Hip Hop in its original form. Trip Hop was term made up by British, middle class journalists. Let’s not give them any credit for anything. Ok?

    T.... ....

@HighlyOpi{nion}ated yup.... just down tempo Hip Hip....

    T.... ....

    @HighlyOpi{nion}ated Kool Keith ?

    T.... ....

It was a British take on hip hop. Particularly, the Bristol scene.
