Dixie Chicks - Silent House Lyrics

These walls have eyes
Rows of photographs
And faces like mine
Who do we become
Without knowing where
We started from

It's true I'm missing you
As I stand alone in your room

Everyday that will pass you by
Every name that you won't recall
Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house

One room
Two single beds
In the closet hangs
Your favorite dress
The books that you read
Are in scattered piles
Of paper shreds

Everything that you made by hand
Everything that you know by heart

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house
Silent house

In the garden off the living room
A chill fills the air
And the lilies bloom

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this

And I will try to connect
All the pieces you left
I will carry it on
And let you forget
And I'll remember the years
When your mind was clear
How the laughter and life
Filled up this silent house

Silent house

Dixie Chicks Silent House Comments
  1. D.... ....

This song is dedicated to all the loved ones I lost. My grandfather who died home when I was 15 years old, my friend from my childhood who died when I was 20 in his seventeen, one of my girlfriend who died in a car crash when I was 21, my grandmother who died when I was 26 and my father who died the year I reached 31. And now I got stabbed in my back by one of my another girlfriends who only used me when she was separated from her ex but finally reunited with him.

KIERA COYOTE SAY :THANKS FOR POSTING THIS KELSEY. GREAT ARTWORK"!!!!

  3. n.... ....

My mom and 3 of her siblings died from it (out of six), 1 currently has it also so 5 from Alzheimer's. My moms mother died from it. I had my DNA tested and looks like I'm doomed if I don't die of a heart attack 1st. I'm 63 and haven't thought I'd live long past 70 if I even got that far. I always told my husband if I did get Alzheimer's, the day I don't know who you are or the kids, that's the day I die. If I can't remember the best of my life anymore the rest is just spent dying but the you don't even know you are. I don't need or believe in a "hell" that's below, not knowing what is going on is hell enough on earth for me. It's cruel, but no one said life was fair, did they?

Every time I hear this song ,I wonder if it will be a tribute to one of my family growing older. So far , no. But, I wonder how many others face this and hope they take this song and make it their own. If my children ever face this challenge, I can only hope they will feel the same.

  7. R.... M....

Boy, I just had to delete a comment with my picture on it, that I know I did not write. What a surprise! What's up with that!

    R.... M....

    i love this song

  8. T.... E....

Alzheimer's sucks I lost my grandfather to it in 85 and last year my uncle now my mom has it. Its to much for a family have to go threw if it wasn't for the support group I don't think I could handle it

  9. 5.... ....

Co-written with Neil Finn of Crowded House. Check out their version for the pop/rock alternative.

    5.... ....

53greenhill I heard the Crowded House version first but was aware Neil Finn was the co writer . Both great versions and very moving when thinking about the subject matter .

What a beautiful song. Thanks for the upload and the lyrics. I don't care about any typos.

  11. E.... B....

There's a typo in your text. It says "all the -peices- you left" instead of "all the pieces you left".

    E.... B....

And one that says "stapd alone" instead of "stand alone"

  12. E.... C....

    This is a good song

  13. A.... A....

This is dedicated to my grandma who passed on New Year's Day. She struggled with Alzheimer's for 4 years.

  14. A.... A....

I miss the old you Granny, I wish you would remember me.

  15. M.... S....

    Thank you Lisa!

You are correct about the Alzheimers. In my opinion the best video of Silent House is the Austin City Limits live video from Jan.20th, 2007. Go to Daily Motion.com and type in Dixie Chicks-Silent House. The intro explaining the song's origin is not included, but the tempo and singing of the song are better live. I was impressed by the Dixie Chicks when I saw this concert on TV and especially this song. The music really soars on the live version.

  17. I.... ....

I'll miss you Grandma, and try to remember you like you were before this horrible disease took you away from us before you were gone.

  18. K.... B....

This song still brings tears to my eyes, even after so many years later after losing my mother to breast cancer. Saying goodbye and trying to keep the memories is hard. Miss you Mom.

  19. E.... K....

"Silent House" -- The Dixie Chicks -- It was inspired by lead singer Natalie Maines' grandmother who struggled with Alzheimer's disease.

    E.... K....

Erick Kristoffer Daquioag ...or it was written by Neil Finn (of the band Crowded House) about the death of his friend and band member Paul Hester (with slightly altered lyrics)

Edit: actually, looking into it / thinking about it more, I suspect it's one of those rare, poignant moments in song writing where the song is about both, as both Neil and the Dixie Chicks were coping with grief. So the song reflects both contexts.

  20. K.... L....

I'm not sure actually. I'd never heard that but that does fit. Thanks for telling me :)

  21. 2.... ....

I miss you, Granny. I will never forget you.

  22. M.... S....

I had read that this song was written about one of their Grandmothers who had Alzheimers. Maybe I was mistaken but I don't think so.

  23. K.... L....

Excuse me but if I may ask how this would relate to the song? Maybe we understood it differently but I don't see any connection.

  24. M.... S....

My two sisters and I are going through this now with our older sister......sooooo heartbreaking! Such an accomplished person who now in unable to even form a simple sentence. ♥♥♥ So hard to see her this way but we are doing our best to be there and are taking the best care of her we can. ♥♥♥

  25. B.... B....
